Passport renewals
If you are a British citizen living in Munich, and your British passport is about to expire, then you should send it off to the consulate in Düsseldorf. Passports can not be renewed at the Munich consulate. Note that by German law you are required to be able to prove your ID at all times when out and about in Germany. For British citizens proof of ID will usually mean your passport. During passport renewal, however, you are required to send your passport off to Düsseldorf. This usually results in you being without a passport for about two weeks. The British consulate's advice on how to deal with this, "don't get into a situation where you need proof of ID". Helpful.
Actually, sarcasm aside, German law only requires that you prove your ID to the satisfaction of the policeman asking. If you show him your bank card, blood donor card, or local video rental card and he's satisfied, that's you sorted.
Consulate to close?
In December 2004 the news emerged that Britain would be closing many of its smaller foreign embassies and consulates. This was a cost-cutting measure. The British Consulate in Munich was not one of those to be closed. It was, however, decided that its staff posted from Britain should be replaced with local Munich residents.
