Australian Rules Football is active in
Munich. The local team is called the Munich Kangaroos. They welcome all new (and old!) players each season. In 2004 The Roos were runners-up at the AFLG (Australian Football League Germany) before getting their revenge in 2005 to win the premiership (Munich Kangaroos 13.8 (86) defeated Frankfurt Redbacks 0.4 (4) by 82 points). In 2006, Munich found themselves in the final against the as-yet-undefeated Rheinland Lions. No matter, as Munich came from behind to win back to back premierships (Munich Kangaroos 7.13 (55) defeated Rheinland Lions 7.6 (48) by 7 points). Training is once per week, matches about every three weeks, plenty of social functions. Beginners welcome. The Roos also host the Oktoberfest Cup, which has been held around Oktoberfest time most years over the past decade.
The season generally runs from April to August, with the finals played in early September. Training takes place during the season on Thursday evenings from 18:00 in the Hirschgarten park, 5 minutes walk from the train station Laim.
