Augustiner

Augustiner is a family of monks from Munich. The name Augustiner, however, is more famously associated with the brewery founded by those monks.

Augustiner is widely regarded as the best beer brewed in Munich. In fact, their reputation is so good that it is their company policy to not engage in commercial advertising, ever.

The main Augustiner brewery is located on Landsberger Straße, just west of Munich's central train station - the Hauptbahnhof.

Augustiner own several beer halls in Munich, both large and small. Here are the main ones:

Augustiner Bräustuben - Landsbergerstrasse 19, this is the big one
Augustiner am Dom - next to the cathedral
Augustiner am Platzl - center of town, close to the Hofbräuhaus
Augustiner Arnulfstraße - with Munich's 2nd largest beergarden
Haidhausener Augustiner - in Haidhausen, obviously

The initials J.W. in the Augustiner logo stand for Joseph Wagner. Jens, along with Therese Wagner, bought the brewery from the Bavarian State in 1829. The brewery's own website mentions the sale to the Wagner family in 1829, but mentions it in direct connection to "Mr. Anton & Mrs. Therese" - there is no mention of Joseph.
