Zum Koreaner - Munich

Zum Koreaner serve authentic Korean food. The restaurant has two branches. On Amalienstrasse is the self-service bistro. They have authentic home cooked (no-MSG) Korean dishes. I have been there several times! It is quite popular among the students and the prices are very reasonable. You must try the dishes Schweinebauch & Saptsche.

Zum Koreaner - Nymphenburgstr. Munich

The second branch is on Nymphenburgerstrasse (pictured above). Here there are more varieties of Korean dishes. The prices are much higher but it is still highly recommended. The "must try" dish is the two pax set meal (you will go crazy over this).

I can recommend the restaurant as well (haven't tried the Imbissstand yet). They have the standard Korean dishes (bibimbap, bulgogie, kim chi) and they used to have a really nice bin dae doc but not since the new chef started (a year or so ago). Still, the quality is good, although too spicy for my work colleagues (not a good career move taking them there!). It's never overly busy even though the place is pretty small. As you can see on the photo, they have large group tables, or the short tables you sit around on cushions. Not good for tall people or those with weak circulation. Yum yum.

Been to the imbiss parlour sporadically. Food is good. Reasonably priced. Come in go out. Schweinebauch is for people who like it hot, no veggie though. Bim Bim Bap is good if you're feeling kinda veggie. Take the normal Bim Bim Bap since the one in the hot pot is basically the same, only that it is heated, it doesn't justify the up-price. A visit is well worth.

Food is bad. The staff is constantly laughing at the people eating at the restaurant. They make rude comments...especially on how everyone does not know that the bim bim bap has to be mixed first. I should know, I'm Korean. I would not recommend this place. Go to Seoul in upper Schwabing for better food and friendlier service. At Seoul, the food is authentic and good.

Really? I had great service there, we didn't know what to eat, and they gave us a great and helpful explaination of the food.

I think the imbiss has ben an italian place for about 6 months.

Carm... They were laughing at you. Trust me. I guess since you did not know what you were eating, obviously you did not know if it was good Korean food. The food is tailored to European tastes...less spicy and sweeter. Try going there again, you will see them talking amongst themselves...it's about you.

Hi Carmen, ignore all the comments above about "them laughing at you"; they are purely a poor tactic to get you to switch teams, per se. Having lived in Seoul for 2 years, I highly recommend "Zum Koreaner" (and have raved about them in a TT thread), both the restaurant and the imbiss serve authentic Korean food; it can’t get any better in Germany! I've only been to the restaurant Seoul once, the food was overpriced and to be honest, quite bland for Korean standards. An Italian restaurant?? Not likely! In the past year, the imbiss did however move to a new location (across the street, in fact). I've been eating there weekly since 2002 and it has always served Korean.

We've never had the impression that they've been laughing at us, apart from once when I accidentally flicked some food onto the table, but then we all laughed. As long as they're nice enough to our faces, who cares what they talk about in the kitchen or at the back table. Much better service than most German restaurants where they treat you like crap at your table, imho. Of course, whilst the food isn't as good as it would be directly in Asia, it's pretty good for an import.

Sometime ago i did talk to the older Chef about this laughing thing. He is Korean but he also speaks excellent chinese as well hence i am able to complain about this matter. I have been a regular at their place since i am able to understand chinese (since all the other workers there are chinese) i have not witness them laughing at any westerners. If so i would have understand their purpose. I believe those guys might be a little cheeky when seeing pretty girls within thus was teasing each other.

I have to agree with the others, real good place! Tthe staff is friendly and the food nice and cheap. Never experienced anything like the "laughing-story", neither in the Imbiss nor in the restaurant.

Zum Koreaner is a chain enterprise with two locations in Munich. My wife and I have gone to the Imbiss version in Schwabing and found the offer quite reasonable, so tonight we decided to try the more formal version on Nymphenburgerstrasse 132. It turned out to be the biggest dining disappointment I have had for the last 3 years. We ordered fried-beef (one of those dishes which are prepared in front of the guests at their table), and were presented with oil-dripping, half-burnt beef jerky. On the side was a few slices of lettuce, with a bug crawling on it. I complained to the waitress, she didn't know what to do, and went to the kitchen to ask for further instruction from her boss. The problem was solved by wishing the bug away complemented by a half-hearted apology from the waitress, sulkiness from the boss, and (surprise!) no discount. The beef-jerky cost a whooping 15 Euros, an absolute rip-off given the portion and the quality. I was left 35 Euros poorer and silently angry at myself for judging the book by its cover and buying into the "Top 10 restaurant" sticker prominently displayed on the front door.

Went here today (imbiss location) for the first time, for lunch, on a whim. Must have been all the soccer talk. Okay, first of all, their bibimbap had only sprouts and some steamed zucchini. Instead of the fried egg you get shredded omelette, which is just wrong. Couple teaspoons of veg were topped by the rice, also sorta wrong. The usual free side dishes cost extra >:-( Counter chick asked me if I wanted hot sauce. Um...yeah? So I get a couple of unappetizing squirts out of a plastic bottle. Have a momentary panic but at least it turns out to be gochujang. It tasted fine but basically it is hard to screw up steamed rice and gochujang out of a bottle, no? 5 Euro is not expensive for lunch, except for what you are getting it *is* sort of expensive. Too bad, 'cause I love Korean food and would really like a good place nearby. Also kind of wish they had (bibim or mool) naeng myun now that it is getting hot outside. Limited selection in general. Got scoffing look from german yuppie for mixing my bap up and eating it with a spoon, but as we've already established, Germans know as much about asian food as my muslim aunties know about schnapps and leberkase. ie., not much.

I too wish the bibimbap had the fried egg on top. But for 5 EUR, it's still not a bad quick bite. Ignore the germans. I saw one put soy sauce on her bibimbap! I've seen them eat ethiopian food with fork and knife (not hands!) All credibility is lost :)

I can't say that there was anything wrong with the service, which was distant but relatively normal. No laughing. The appetizer, served after the "main dish" was put on our table, was good. #6, can't remember the name, but basically they were little wrappers stuffed with ground meat and vegetables, and then fried, like a wonton. Very tasty. The main dish, though, was beyond comprehension. (#26) A bowl filled with a dishwatery broth that tasted of nothing ... chunks of stringy, overcooked, unrecognizable meat that you could floss your teeth with ... about 1/4 of a zucchini, a half of a carrot, 6 slabs of tofu, a handful of noodles, and a chopped onion. If that's authentic, fine, but at 12.90 per person for 2 people (so 26 euros for the dish), so way overpriced. Seems to me that it would cost about 2 euros to make the whole thing. The description on the menu made no mention that most of the dish was tofu. Cooked at the table just meant that she slopped the bowl down on a camping stove on our table and walked away. In my opinion, it was a waste of money and very disappointing.

This used to be a good restaurant in the short time I have been in Munich (since Nov 2006), but quality of service and food managed to deteriorate. Waitress didn't understand what was being offered, Chapchae was dry, overly stickly and far too little, rice was dry (actually, it felt like scrapings or rice that had been left overnight) and bulgogie dry and overcooked. Will look for a replacement to this restaurant which I had up until now, visited frequently. Portions are too small.

I review Korean restaurants based on: The Kim Chi The rice The meat in a Bul Go Gi I was a bit worried when I entered the Schwabing location. They certainly didn't spend a cent on design. After ordering, the "chef" talked for a long time on the phone, but he managed to get my meal off the stove in time. I paid close to 8 Euro for a nice serving of Bul Go Gi. The meat was of top quality, cooked to perfection. The rice was moist and sticky. The Kim Chi of the finest quality. When considering the prices at the golden arches (McDonalds) where you pay close to 7 Euro for a "meal", this place is a great find. Can't wait to sample other dishes in the near future, as it is difficult to judge based on a single visit. Especially when reading the bad reviews of previous Toytown members.

I went the restaurant with 11 of my international colleagues and we loved everything. I am Korean and tried most of Korean restaurants in Munich. Therefore, I can tell you that this one is the best Korean restaurant in Munich! Meals are bit pricey but tasty. Ladies working there were very nice & kind. However, imbiss is horrible. The guy working there is unfriendly and I somehow do not like the way they cook. Food is okay and price is affordable.
