Zerwirk - Munich

Zerwirk - Ledererstr. 3, 80331 Munich, Germany

Used to be a butcher's, now it's a vegan restaurant, club, literary salon, etc. It was originally built in 1264 as a bathhouse and is the second-oldest building in Munich as well as one of the oldest secular buildings in Bavaria. It's also been a Falcon house, a brewery, a game store (as in venison and wild boar), and most recently a theater.

Update 2009: Not even the deli is open anymore, and the restaurant ("Saf") has closed.

Had dinner here on Sunday night not knowing the place had been open only two days. I was really impressed with the food. The veggies were cooked beautifully, the presentation was thoughtful, and the service was gracious. Delicious!

I've heard the non-smoking zone doesn't help much, and that the waiters and waitresses smoke while on duty. And visible for all the guests. vegan.de smokefreeliving.net

We were here on Friday. Friendly service and the food was very tasty. It seems to be a bit "in" right now, so it was pretty busy, but that could have just been the Friday night. Worth a visit, even if you aren't a veggo.

Visited last weekend and was not impressed. Artichokes were undercooked (ie. inedible), gratin and schnitzel were completely tastless. Would certainly not go back.

worth noting that on thursdays fridays and saturdays, zerwirk is a cool club, currently 'in' with the trendy Glockenbach crowd.

Can only agree with Show'Em ... not impressed. Our soup was forgotten. Our main course was served lukewarm and after complaining the same food was returned to us after 5 minutes partially refried (=greasy) and partially reheated in the oven (=bone dry). All the while the waitress maintained that it was freshly prepared. To top it all off: unfriendly service and furniture direct from the IKEA bargain bin. Give this place a miss. (For veggies: try Cafe Ignaz instead)

Went there a month ago and found the food to be inventive and tasty. The service however was awful, the worst I've ever had. They forgot parts of our order and it took 45 minutes to get the bill.

I went to Zerwirk for lunch earlier this week. Service was fine, the food was surprisingly tasty, and the price reasonable. I doubt I'll go there again though as the choice of dishes didn't seem very varied.

went for lunch today -- fab deal at 6.90. I got the Menü -- today it was rice, sabzhi (sp?) Indian vegetable curry-type stuff, and a chestnut soup or mousse au chocolat. I got the soup and drank tap water so my total was 6.90. Not bad! The mousse was a bit sweet for me, and they didn't clear the table very quickly, but the food got there really fast and were quick when we asked for the check too. And we were indeed in the non-smoking zone, which was quite nice. Thumbs up!

What's the deal here, I thought this was a nightclub, not a restaurant... Anyone have any reports about late-night activity there?

Posted by: "Bubba" at 5:21 pm on 16.Feb.2006

It is composed of a 3-level house, the restaurant is on the top floor, nightclub in the middle and a deli/store on the ground floor. I have been for dinner twice - fantastic! Friendly service, a BIG plus for Munich, and wonderfully food. Smoke is minimal, portions are large, and the food is so wonderful and rich, you may forget it is vegan! The restaurant closes at 11:00, have not been to the club, but would be a good place to get the evening started. Location is great for a meeting point if you decide to go elsewhere. The store below is not much to look at, but the selection is great for vegan alternatives.

Have eaten here numerous times since it opened in 2005. In the beginning we were really impressed but over the last year or so have been getting more and more annoyed with the service (or lack of). They really need to employ more staff so that drinks and food gets served on time and possibly a few more people in the kitchen so then food doesn't turn up cold. A number of guests were annoyed last time we went and upon mentioning it to the waitress just received snide remarks. Please sort this out Zerwirk!!!

I am vegetarian and I ate here frequently in September when I was studying German at Goethe Institute. I liked speaking German and always had great food and service. There is alot of variety, they have a new menu everyday.
