Website: Yum Thai
This place had the best service I have come across in Germany, and the prices are reasonable. The food is very tasty. Make sure you book WAY ahead because it's not uncommon for them to be booked out two weeks in advance.
Posted by: "Glenn Turner" at 5:23 am on 12.Apr.2003According to the friendly waiter, "Yum" is Thai for salad. This is why the salads section of the menu is called Yum and also why the first choice, their house salad, is called Yum Yum. Why one would call a restaurant "Salad" is beyond me, but each to their own. Yum is a very classy Thai restaurant on a little street off Blumenstr., quite close to the Viktualienmarkt. The atmosphere is cosy & romantic, the service is the some of the best I've seen in any type of restaurant in Munich and the food is, how can I put this, Yum-yum. Starters will set you back between 5 and 9 Euro with main courses averaging around the 10 to 16 region. Wines knock in between about 10 and 30 Euro depending on what you want. If you're waiting for a table or just want to have a looksee at the place, there's a nice enough bar area where you can have a few drinks. I definitely recommend this place if you're going on a date or if you just want to enjoy a very nice atmosphere and top quality service.
Posted by: "MunichNights.com" at 4:36 am on 21.May.2003Very tasty food with a super cool atmosphere. ;-)
Posted by: "Born to be Thai..." at 8:37 am on 27.May.2003Agree that the atmostphere was nice, low-lighting, dark colors. Food was tasty, and the pad thai was quite good. This is a good date restaurant, but a bit too packed in seating arrangements making it a little too loud and non-intimate when it's crowded.
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 9:55 am on 11.Jul.2003I've been there about 6 or 7 times now, because the service and the food is so good. The website has the menu in English. Wasn't too keen on the whole fried fish I had once, only because I had to pick out bones. I love the Pad Thai in the permanent specials section. I'd definitely recommend it if you like Thai food. I don't like spicy food, but I love the flavor. Hint: Get a table around the back or side - the atmosphere and decor is better. And, book ahead. Lasy year, I once tried booking for a table on Friday or Saturday, but they were already booked out on Tuesday. PS. I don't own the restaurant or work for them. ;-)
Posted by: "NZ Dude" at 9:20 am on 14.Feb.2004Excellent Ambience and even better Service. Food was fresh and very tasty! Going back for sure.
Posted by: "ken" at 11:52 am on 2.Mar.2004I would love to be able to wax on about the woderful service and food at YUM but on the night we arrived, having booked some 4 weeks earlier, our reservation had mysteriously vanished from the booking sheet. Even more mysterious was the fact that I personally checked the booking, to adjust numbers, the evening before. I would also love to tell you that the Maitre de was incredibly appologetic and tried to make this up to us, but that simply did not happen. YUM may get great reviews but a Restaurant that treats its guests this way is simply not good enough for me and as many friends I can warn off.
Posted by: "Disappointed" at 4:20 pm on 18.May.2004It's the best restaurant I've experienced in Munich so far - as far as I'm concerned it cannot and will not be bettered - not cheap, but simply superb food, great ambience and very friendly staff.
Posted by: Jimbo at 12:04 am on 19.May.2004After reading great reviews I booked a table one week ahead for two. When we arrived at 7.30 on a tuesday night it was half full. We were shown to our table which was squashed inbetween a party for four and a guy eating alone, needless to say we did not feel very comfortable as everyone was able to hear each others chit chat. Food was great as were the cocktails, the service was just alright. But the downside was were we we sitting right next to the coat and the tills with a constant flow of people at my back. Would think if you have reserved a table in a half full place you would get a choice of where to sit. Would not go back for this reason
Posted by: "Funky Fo" at 1:49 pm on 19.May.2004We arrived at 7.30 to find no record of our booking, the night was to celebrate a good friends birthday, there were nine of us. Spookily someone had telephoned the host 1 hour earlier to check the booking was still wanted. We were able to see that the pencil booking had since been rubbed out and replaced with another. There was no apology made, no-one would admit to making the telephone call, there was no steps taken to ensure we would return on another evening. We were completely discusted by this kind of service. We will be relaying this story to as many people as we can.
Posted by: "williamson" at 11:54 am on 22.May.2004It would have been great to taste the food at YUM, but when we arrived there was no record of our reservation which we had made two weeks earlier and had also confirmed the night before. The restaurant made no apology to us and treated us like we were wasting their time. Never again! I will take my custom elsewhere and spread the word to friends.
Posted by: "Benedickter" at 11:36 am on 29.May.2004Best restaurant in Munich! Been there many times now and each time an excellent meal!! I'd recommend 'W5', Gai Panang!
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 11:27 pm on 25.Aug.2004Service schicky-micky, food definitely not so good as many say, expensive, nose_up_to_the_ceiling waiters. It is definitely not a good Thai restaurant for me, and I have been eating in many. For example I find Khanittha and Benjarong much, much better. I will never go to Yum again, mostly because of strange and not comfortable atmosphere.
Posted by: "Boro" at 4:31 pm on 10.Sep.2004Yum's "strange atmosphere" is probably because it's a classy restaurant ;-)
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 10:32 am on 11.Sep.2004Well, if you call unfriendly staff and place so stuffed with tables that you can not eat in peace - "a classy restaurant" - let it be for you. It is not for me. So many better Thai restaurants in Munich that this one doesn't call me anymore, at all.
Posted by: "Boro" at 2:08 pm on 12.Sep.2004for me...a sensation for more than 3 years. always delicious, excellent service and interesting people. hottest spot in munich!
Posted by: "boro1" at 5:00 pm on 21.Mar.2005Yum2Take is a imbiss version of Yum. We went there yesterday and had a wonderful meal, the price for main dish(Wok) ranges from 6.90 to 8.90. Most of the famous dishes are there, Pad Thai(Fried noodle), Panang, Green Curry, Kao Suey(fried noodle with coconut soup) The decoration is very nice, doesn't feel like being in an imbiss at all. Cannot remember the exact address but it's just a short walk from the restaurant.
Posted by: "Yum2Take" at 9:12 am on 11.May.2005Yum2take is located on Praelat-Zistl-Str. right by the Viktualian Market. I think this place has the best "pad thai" and very high quality food. I order the wok noodles and substitute shrimp for tofu and it is fantastic. Two people can eat the portion size too.
Posted by: "julie" at 12:13 pm on 13.May.2005For someone who have not had a true high quality Thai food would say this place is brilliant, until you know what high status Thai food should be like this place is certainly lack of good standard of professional training and the food to my point of view is medium to more low status.
Posted by: "Ru Smith" at 5:17 pm on 17.May.2005Absolutely brilliant. 'nuff said!
Posted by: "xargon" at 6:01 pm on 17.May.2005i went there last night with friends, it was excellent. The food was top notch, all our main courses were fantastic. The only slight two grievances I'd have is that the services wasn't that great - granted the place was very full but waiting 10 to 15 minutes for your drinks is pretty lax. Also, while the main courses we had were all excellent, the mixed starter we had was basically just a plate of deep fried veg - and didn't taste that great. Much better to order individual starters, or skip them all together. We managed to get a booking for the very night i reserved(a monday) but the place was full all night, so definitely book well ahead for a weekend night...
Posted by: LFF at 4:14 pm on 7.Jun.2005Ruined evening. My date and I arrived about 10 minutes early for a Tuesday 7:00 reservation. We were seated in the rear. The service, appetizer and main courses were great. The evening was ruined when at 7:40 we were given the bill and told that we had to leave because of another reservation. Hello? We had just finished eating but hadn't finished our drinks. Dessert was contemplated but it was not an option this night. There were other tables available as well. Rude and ruined! Good food, nice atmosphere, poor organization and personal skills. We will NEVER return.
Posted by: "Stovepipe" at 12:33 pm on 21.Aug.2005Very good food for sure. Awful service, very unfriendly staff sand they tried charging us for more than we had eaten. My best mate loves this place, otherwise i wouldn't go back and certtainly wouldn't recommend it for larger groups (more than two people)
Posted by: "JB" at 10:53 am on 25.Aug.2005I went there with a large group (16 people) the other night and thought it was fantastic. The food and service were wonderful, no missing orders or waiting for drinks. After dinner we all floated towards the bar area, which has a lovely atmosphere. When the bill arrived there wasn't one thing on there that we couldn't account for (which is unusual for a large group who aren't even all sitting together).
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 4:37 pm on 25.Aug.2005Went there four times, without a reservation, and two times they managed to find a seat for me and my wife (the other two times we had to leave, as it was too full). The food is really really good, and is the reason why I will go back. Never had problem with service, may it be because I usually go there very late (when I go out, I usually have dinner at 21.30 or so).
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 10:32 pm on 25.Aug.2005We tried this place on the strength of TT recommendations, and frankly we were disappointed. The restaurant itself is beautiful, and the dishes beautifully presented, but the actual food was unspectacular especially given the price and setting. For what they are charging and what they are marketing themselves to be, I would have expected a lot more interesting choices, instead it was just the typical red/green/massaman options you get in your average midwestern takeaway, and not particularly great versions of them either. The salads were spicy without having any other balancing flavor, and (rather pedestrian) versions of the more popular items are for some reason anointed as "chef's specialties" and priced at nearly three times the usual. I mean, completely basic Pad Thai for 15 euro?? Is it because of the shrimp? Meh.
Posted by: "Nadia" at 7:56 pm on 28.Aug.2005Just went on Friday night (with reservations) and found it to be a bit overrated. Sure, the food was good (although I agree too pricey for the small portions) but the service was spotty (our flamboyantly gay waiter couldn't focus on us long enough to even take down our orders, our cocktails arrived AFTER our food (we ordered them at least 15 minutes before ordering our food), and even though he said they didn't use MSG I about passed out from the glutamate levels!). So... try it once (cocktails were great, food was good) but be prepared for not such good service. And avoid this place like the plague if you are sensitive to MSG!!!!
Posted by: "Carol" at 12:43 pm on 29.Aug.2005Yeah, pretty much like most of the more recent comments above. Went there on a Thursday night, thankfully they hadn't "lost" our reservation, but unless you're lucky, you will be squeezed in right next to others. Service was fine, although rather nose-in-the-air waitresses. Food was good (not spectacular but good enough) although pricey - more expensive than the website, note, which is somewhat out of date. If you're in the area and your reservation's vanished, I'd personally go for Mongo's Mongolian Bar (Oberanger 28) instead...
Posted by: "RichardG" at 8:21 pm on 2.Dec.2005Hmmm - the losing the reservation thing seems to be a standard routine there. We wanted to go there last week to celebrate a friends' birthday. I'd booked a table well in advance and called a couple days before to see if we could get a bigger table, only to be told we didn't have a reservation at all, and there was no way to squeeze us in anymore. Fortunately we were able to get a table at RĂ¼en Thai in Westend where we had a great meal. Yum sounds like a fun place to go if a) you're well-connected and can therefore make and keep a reservation or b) fortunate enough not be bumped out by someone in the a) group!
Posted by: "Michelle" at 12:34 pm on 5.Apr.2006HMmmmmm - I really do not understand - the food is said not to be that great , the service not up to mark - the waiters rude- but people still seem to want to be there! Interesting!
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 1:54 pm on 14.Sep.2006Overpriced, poorly seated....everyone smokes on top of each other! and one of the most up his own arse gay waiters, simply because I asked for an alternative table, I was described as " difficult", ( he didnt realise I understood german when he was speaking to another waitress!) food was...........weird, not like any thai I have eaten, in fact one dish went uneaten! Last year I went to soul kitchen off amelien strasse and this was fantastic food, service and excellent price...........I know where my next thai meal will be when I next come to munich, if you think this place is exclusive..............you need to get out more! Posted by: "Barbara" at 3:58 pm on 31.May.2007Visited Yum this evening and had rather a mixed experience. The decor and lighting is still very impressive, and the food is still good. What really put me off was how unfriendly the manager was when we entered the restaurant having booked and how close the tables have become; I'm sure they've squeezed more in since my last visit. The service is also more hectic than it used to be. This all makes for a rather unwelcoming atmosphere. I fear that Yum has become too successful for its own good ...
