Wirtshaus im Grüntal - Munich

Wirtshaus im Grüntal is a historical public house nestled amongst Chestnut trees in Herzopark, a few hundred metres east of the Isar "Staudamm". The beer garden is quite picturesque and very peaceful, shaded by the trees and cooled by the flowing water of the Brunnbächerl stream. The food is as refined as the area in which it is situated, so too are the prices. It claims to have exellent "Wild" (game) dishes but I have never tried them. The food is a variety of typical Bavarian and Austrian dishes. In the summer months they also have an outside barbecue where steaks, lamb chops and Spanferkel are prepared.

Summary: not cheap but good food and an idyllic location.

Grüntal is a classy place with excellent fine Bavarian and Austrian food in one of the nicest neighborhoods of Munich (near Effnerplatz). Naturally they also serve hearty Bavarian dishes. Really outstanding are their dishes with game, poultry and local fish. Food is presenting on ultra large plates, nicely decorated, yummy. The inside is truly charming and romantic with several smaller rooms. It’s never as noisy as in the typical Bavarian beer halls. Their beer garden features a big barbecue and has a little stream running through it. It does get chilly in the afternoons, due to the proximity of the Isar. Also the sun disappears rather early behind the high trees. One of my, if not my most favorite eatery for Bavarian food and/or beer garden.
