The Welser Kuche is a medieval themed dinner/restaurant in the basement of the Feldherrnhalle. While it has a fixed address and time for the dinner, the entire experience (food, drink, menus, activities) is planned by a professional catering company. This makes the evening particularly suitable for organized group dinners, and not suitable for a couple looking for a spontaneous night out. The celler has space for about 180 people, and is divided into large & small rooms, and individual tables that can accommodate groups of between 12 and 120 people.
The experience is designed around a 15th/16th medieval dinner. Tables are bare wood, there are no utensils to eat with (save a blunt dagger-like knife), and cups, pitchers, plates and so forth are all earthenware. The interior decorations match the theme, and the staff all dress in similar medieval-ly fashion.
You're given a small horn of mead as a welcoming drink, and the menus are set to a fixed course with no individual orders. The courses can be specifically arranged by the catering company if you desire, or they have several set packages to choose from . Some meals plans are listed here.
A large part of the entertainment comes from the various rules enforced during meal. For instance, women must serve the men, and the men cannot serve themselves. If your group lacks enough women, then some men will be picked by the staff to be a 'sister' for a while. Before each course, there are some rules explained about what is permissible, and what not. Example: you cannot use your knife to pick chicken chunks out of your soup - use your hands. Breaking rules results in public punishment of a humorous kind.
There is plenty of beer available ("auf die Gesundheit!"), and some schnapps recreated from medieval recipes (the world's come a *long* way in schnapps production and refinement since then). In fact, the company says that all food and drink is prepared according to original medieval recipes (with possible exceptions for cola and espresso).
There's more medieval type entertainment to be expected, naturally. I didn't see any jugglers, but there were bard-like musicians. With the right group, this place can be pretty raucous & fun.
10 course meal: €49.50 per person
6 course meal: €44.50 per person
Drinks are extra (assume priced per pitcher)
One tip: Bring your own camera. There is a professional photographer offering digital & prints, but those are very, *very* expensive.
Second tip: You should have good German language understanding, to follow along with all the rules & games. It's helpful to know some antiquated words as well for the menu and otherwise (du Weib!).
The meal starts at 20:00. Reservations required.

Had a company function there once - and I hated it. The meal itself is alright - its just the games which are forced on one, that I found boring example: the magician taking someone's watch placing it in a bag, hammering on it and finding it to be in one piece again.
Posted by: "just my opinion" at 9:50 am on 22.Dec.2006I had a company christmas party at Welser Kuche and had a great time, very cool place, they can do everything in English if need be, as about half of us couldn't speak German. Great beer, too.
