Vorstadt Café - Türkenstrasse 83, 80799 Munich, Germany

One of the great traditions of Munich (and Germany in general) is the Sunday morning breakfast with friends. I love this kind of thing. You and your mates roll out of bed at around 10:30 and arrange to meet at a café for a long, relaxing brunch.

Vorstadt Café is one of the key places to think of when deciding on a venue. Slap bang in the middle of trendy Schwabing, it is packed with locals and minor TV and film stars on Sundays. There's not much room inside, mainly because they have stuffed chairs and tables in like sardines, so try to get a table on the sidewalk in the summer, as it's warmer, more pleasant and less cramped. And you won't be trampled by fashion mamas with pushchairs out there either, which is something that happen regularly inside.

The service can be slow, but the breakfasts are lavish and tasty.

Had dinner here last night - food was excellent, as was the wine (limited choice though) and indeed the cocktails afterward. It is a little small inside, but usually has a great atmosphere, with relaxed music playing at a reasonable level in the background. Even ordering a steak, spaghetti, 4 cocktails, and the most expensive wine on the menu, the total bill was still under 90€, so it's great value too. Superb place, and I'll look forward to trying the breakfast soon...

After reading the raves here at TT I thought I'd check out the Vorstadt. To my surprise it was not really a cafe but a restaurant where I'd already been taken by an LMU (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität prof a couple weeks ago. That lunch was quite pleasant and the food (Italian) good and reasonably priced. This time (Saturday evening about 6) I parked myself near the open front door so as to get better air (hopefully less cigarette smoke) and ordered unleaded (bleifreies, a nonalcoholic beer). The place was moderately full around 6, and by 7 it was apparent that those turning up for dinner in the white-tablecloth area would have been advised to reserve. Clientele appeared mostly in their 30s, though there were deviations at both ends. Some were Beautiful People, but others were ordinarios scruffily dressed. At a table near me sat a couple of 25-ish women speaking English, with non-native accents, who may have come from the interpreter institute on Amalienstrasse. The waitresses are cute. All of them would get carded in the US (= asked for ID, appearing under 21). After an hour with the drink I ordered orechiette pasta with broccoli, which was covered with a delicious sauce (EUR 6.90). I'd order it again. This is not the greatest place to sit by yourself and write, which is what I wanted to do, but for a night out with the lads or a girlfriend the Vorstadt Cafe would be a good choice.

Wanted to post our thoughts on this restaurant/cafe... we had reservations for 2 on a Friday night, but it's January, and didnt seem like they were needed. Their dinner menu is a 'tageskarte' and 1 page, no appetizers listed and most items were between 8-15 euros. For us vegetarians, we found only 2 items on the menu and ordered those. They were both good (baked mozerella caprese salad, and olive gnocchi), although not fantastic. However, the cocktails... They must use a terrible mixer for cosmos, and the following daily cocktail I ordered (prosecco with mango) was really bitter. Both were bad, but they have a large list of cocktails, so maybe others are better-? I wanted a whiskey sour, but wasnt willing to risk it at this place after the unfortunate first 2. The crowd was a mix (had a decked out couple behind us, and then a goth crowd behind my husband) and was a easy location to find. If you are short on ideas and in the universitat area, I would consider this a decent option for meat eaters (order a beer!). And although I wouldn't go back for dinner, I did glance at their breakfast menu, and would definitely consider them for breakfast. Lots of options that looked tasty!

@ Seattle2 - this place is FABULOUS for brekkie and lunch. Loud and crowded, but really really yummy. I haven't tried the dinner yet - but aim to do so as I have never been disappointed.
