The Victorian House Tea Bar & English Pub is a little cafe located in the Schrannenhalle. It is run by the same people as who do the Victorian House, The Sconery, and Brown's Tea Shop.
For cake and tea or a pint of Newcastle Brown at a reasonable price, this is your place. Our thoughts and experiences: a) If you want coffee, be prepared to wait - they have to order it from somewhere else which takes a considerable amount of time. Not good when you got your cake immediately. b) EUR 4,80 for a pie or pasty??? No veg, mash or fries. they are b l o o d y joking aren't they!? They say they are home-made but do not look so to me. I reckon they are imported, hence the price. c) They have a sign saying "English Lager" but it was Kronenburg or something. Why they sell so many "typical English" things and then sell some foreign lager as "English Lager" I do not know! What seemed to be the Manager/Owner, tried to justify it by saying that they were now British-owned; d) The German bar staff argued that there are no British Lagers - obviously thought I was not English (what's with "Carling", "Tennants", "McEwans"?) Not saying they're great - (usually weak and crap) but the bar staff should at least know their stuff and not talk nonsense to their customers. e) What is it with their scones?? After reading peoples' comments here, I thought I would have to see how bad they really were. How can they call them scones?? The *look* like rocks and not at all tempting to eat. My God, they are not at all difficult to make! We have no chance of improving the image of our "cuisine" when English people are churning out c r a p like that and calling it "English"! f) Their tea list is very comprehensive and reasonably-priced at EUR 2,00; g) Their other cakes look wonderful and taste good! You can also find the following items there: Clotted Cream, Fudge, Walkers Crisps, Cadbury's Chocolate, Shortbread Biscuits, Jelly Babies.
