Thaifoon - Frauenplatz 7, 80331 Munich, Germany

Thaifoon is a lounge-bar and Asian restaurant. It's located in the city center right next to the cathedral. In fact, it's so new that it's not even open yet. But it's generating lots of buzz already. We suspect Thaifoon will become popular and successful very quickly. It is owned and managed by Michael Beck. He's the landlord of the Nürnburger Bratwurst Glöckl which is just two doors along. The opening date is supposedly sometime in March, but this may slip judging from the current state of the building work. Watch this space.

If you're Asian or of Asian Heritage there are jobs going at this place according to a huge poster in the Uni U-Bahn station...

Any one heard anymore about when this restaurant is going to open, I always enjoy Thai and would like to try it out.

I walked past yesterday. They're still building. I'd give it at least another couple of weeks, if not 3 or 4.

Saw they were having what looked liked a invitation only do here last night, so it must be nearly open, anyone hear when? Looks very nice inside.

Went to Thaifoon on Friday night last. Had a booking for 8pm and it was very busy when we got there. The first thing that strikes you as you go in are the o2-esque revolving doors with water flowing through them. The second thing is that you can see the chefs doing their thing in the open kitchen area. The third thing is that all the staff smile at you and make eye contact. Quite a treat in Munich. Due to a slight change in plans we needed to get a bigger table. They looked after us quickly and without fuss and seated us upstairs. This was the fourth notable thing. Upstairs is quite big and also has an open kitchen with white hatted chefs milling around and flames aplenty leaping. Thing number of five of note is that the decor is great. The music is unobtrusive and not your typical Thai fare. Flat screen TVs on the walls show a looping video presumably from the Thai tourist board. Mains range from about €15 or so upwards. There's not a particularly large selection to choose from but they are willing to mix things up a bit to suit your tastes. There's a top quality cocktail on offer which is from one of the head waiters. Can't remember the name right now but it's basically a Mojito type affair made with coriander rather than mint. I definitely recommend it. Thaifoon is definitely worth checking out.

we had dinner here last night based on keydeck's post and we thoroughly enjoyed it. i was with a friend from the states who was craving a respite from bavarian cooking in the form of some spicy food. we shared some spring rolls, which were nice. i had a great pork and chili stir fry which was extremely hot and tasty. the door is beautiful and very different. service was friendly and attentive. our waiter was cute and the gals who worked there were adorable as hell. will definitely go back.

Preis / Leistungsverhältnis: not great. Two people racked up 50 Euros for one soup, two beers, and two mains. The food was rather bland, and the music was too loud. Tables are too crammed in -- if they ever get full you'll be elbow to elbow with the next party. (I've heard Yum has the same problem.) Service was great, design was nice (except the tourist board screens are really distracting). Life's too short to go back.

Can't say I was impressed. Far too expensive for what you get, and the music was way too loud. I also thought the waitresses were a little *too* attentive - asking if things are OK every five minutes. Probably won't go back again. Unless the boss is paying.

There last night, and for a Sunday night (when the town was full of Munich's birthday celebrants) it was pretty quiet. There's no doubt that the place is lovely, and the staff attentive, but once we sampled the food and saw the bill, can understand why it's not busy. Food was good, but no more, and my wife's dish was way too hot (you get used to getting a scharf warning in Munich). Won't rush back.

Took my wife to Thaifoon the other night, What a pleasant change for Münich, at last. Friendly attentive service, everything beautifully presented. And finally, a thai restaurant that does proper Thai food, not a germanised version.( anything hotter than a pickled gherkin will have most running for the fire bucket). Freshly made, none of this tinned stuff. Lovely. It was certainly not that expensive for a city centre restaurant and to be honest, I would rather pay a bit more to have excellent food and good service, after all going out for dinner is special, and the last thing you want is some overworked frauline grunting as she throws your slab of cow and two squash balls at you across the table between the seventeen other people that they have squeezed round it. My only comment, the table next to us lit up bloody cigars just when we were half way through our meal and there didnt seem to be a no smoking area. Roll on the day when thoughtless people like that are banned from spoiling other peoples health and enjoyment in public places. Thaifoon, More of the same please

pricy, tasteless food, but the service is good

nice decoration and atmosphere, but just not worth the money...

The restaurant is very nice and I went for my third time in 3 weeks yesterday and on the way out I saw a mouse running through the main glass door!!! Pitty, my last time there....

The food is good and the service too but make sure you don't sit beside the door if the weather is cold. We had a constant draft coming in through a side door that wasn't sealed which took the shine off the place a bit.

Food is too western and nothing special. It is too pricy even if the service is typically Thai (means very good) but I would not recommend to any Thai people to go there because it will be a disappointment. For Western people I think it is ok but if you've been to Thailand before it won't match up.
