Tengs - Triftstr. 1, 80538 Munich, Germany

How far away is Singapore? Thousand of miles away? Well not anymore.

Since 19. November 2004 Singapore can be found right in downtown Munich. More specifically the authentic tastes of multi-racial Singapore can be found in Triftstrasse 1 in Lehel. The first original Singapore restaurant in Munich, "Tengs" offers its customers from 8am till 6pm on weekdays a daily changing menu of local Singapore favourites.

Armed with the family recipes from founder and managing director, Hwee Koon Martinius (born "Tengs") and her partner, Iris Hertkorn, Tengs offer Singapore classics such as Chicken Rice (chicken breast smeared with sesame oil and soya sauce served with rice cooked in sesame oil, ginger, chicken broth und fragrant leaves), Beef Char Kway Teow (rice noodles cooked with thin slices of beef and crunchy bean sprouts in a thick dark and sweet soya sauce) and Beef Rendang (Indonesia's version of the Gulasch with lemongrass, coconut milk and potpourri of spices like coriander, cumin, nutmeg).

Since its discovery by Sir Stamford Raffles of the East India Company in 1819, Singapore has attracted immigrants from all over Asia and over the years this melting pot of Asian cultures has resulted in uniquely Singapore dishes. Meticulous planning has resulted in a bright and airy restaurant, minimalist with its marble topped tables reminiscent of Singapore's colonial times accentuated by orchids and accessories of Oriental design.

Tengs Munich

Singaporeans love their food, hence the well-loved phrase: "Let's go makan!" "Let's go eat!" And where else in Munich but in Tengs.

Tengs will also cater or host private functions.

Very good, light and nicely blended spice dishes. The menu changes regularly, very good for price and service. An asset to the Lehel district. M. Romagnoli-Schmitt

Sorry - but that food has nothing to do with asian taste! I wouldn´t recommend this place! The food having either been microwaved or not cooked long enough -anyway - not day fresh and cold inside.

To have lunch at Tengs is indeed an experience. Who has enjoyed the hawker stalls in Singapore will be able to experience some of the mouth watering experiences again. Of course, Munich is not Singapore but Tengs is the closest you can get and much more authentic than any other Asian restaurant here in Munich, japanese restaurants excluded. I do not agree at all about the previous comment about the food being microwaved. The kitchen is open, one can see how the dishes are being prepared. The ingredients are genuine and of high quality. The food could indeed be a bit warmer, but that is subjective I guess. Try the Rendang burger. That is a real experience and completely exclusive, not just for Munich.

Strange taste, strange smell and the food looked like a dog food and has a texture like uncooked jelly. We say: this was possible the worst asian food we have ever had! Sorry - but stay away!

I agree with Michael. The whole Restaurant had a terrible smell! You can look inside the kitchen and will see a foreign cook like a India or ?? - but not a asian cook. I never would recommend this Restaurant, because the food wasn´t good and the sauces taste like store bought stuff. Save your money folks!

I absolutley LOVE this place. They are nice and the food is REALLY good! Every mouthful is an experience!

Was there a few weeks ago for lunch and the food was excellent.

The food is terrible and I am not the only one with this opinion. I guess that the Tengs will close soon, because the place is most empty! I really can´t understand how anyone can recommend this place???? It´s true: every mouthful is a experience... ... a negative experience you´ll never forget. I love asian food, but this is a nightmare! Just the truth folks!

Lorne, Barbara, and Alan Whittmer above are all three posting from the same IP address which resolves to a company in London. This raises suspicions that either they are one and the same person, or that they might have a particular grudge to bear against Tengs. I can't imagine what the grudge might be though. I've eaten at Tengs myself recently and the food was just fine.

Suspicions? The Lehel is a district with many offices and people who work there! Possible that Barbara and Mr Whitmer are workin´there, perhaps in the same company.Very strange comment Bob! Fact is - and I will repeat it any time again: This food is terrible - and this is my opinion!!! You´ve eaten at Tengs and you said: Fine. That´s your opinion! What´s your problem?

Posted by: "Lorne" at 12:45 am on 11.Jan.2006

I am really impressed how much controversy a small restaurant can create. There is a (Chinese?) saying that goes "if you have nothing good to say then don't say anything." I also notice how destructive and negative the negative comments about Tengs have been worded. Anyway, some people hate it, others like it and quite a few of them are regulars at Tengs. So why this verve and energy to try to keep people away from Tengs?

Posted by: "Manuel Alesi" at 10:25 am on 12.Jan.2006

Controversy makes good publicity. I have to say it has made me curious enough to want to go and try the food there :) Perhaps i will post my opinion here again on the taste and quality of the food once i have eaten there.

I went to Tengs' a couple of days back and sorry, as much as i would like to give a positive review, i just can't. The girl who took my order did not even know what the "Kopi O Peng" (very typical Singaporean coffee drink with ice cubes) is, given the limited menu. I was given a normal cup of coffee but i didn't complain since i wasn't going back there again. The service, the quality of the food, the smell... It's a wonder the shop still exists. Well, to each his own tastebuds.

Been to Tengs - the food is ok , for the prices you pay. There is such a thing as menu, ( did you read it?) just because you know there is Kopi Peng in Singapore- that does not mean it is a must to serve it at Tengs. Service? - I thought it was self-service?

I am a Singaporean and can not recommend that fast food restaurant. In my opinion the problem is the owner. She is from Singapore but grew up here in Munich - never learned to cook our stuff. She´s unable to cook and that´s the reason why she hired a ?? Indian ?? cook. Our kitchen is a kitchen with culture and I just miss the real and original Char Kway Teow not the Tengs idontknowwhatitis food. The Germans eat that food, but a real Singaporean do not. It is worst! I just can say that every "hawker centre" in my hometown serve better food than the Tengs!

I agree with editor bob that it seems there were people with grudges towards Tengs. Being a Singaporean, the basic fact you should know that we have four races which made up of Malay,Chinese,Indians & Eurasians. So if they do have an indian chef cooking there is not surprising except that you are not truly Asian (Singaporean) who obviously do not know about your country. Raised by a gourmet family and having to enjoy couple of times (buddha jump over the wall) which is a seafood thick soup only prepared by top chef over 24 hours and at a price for 500€ per pot or having to try other expensive Asian delicacies therefore i believe i am able to define what is Asian cuisine or not. Personally i find that Teng's pricing is reasonable and what they serve is nothing on your regular Asian restaurant menu. Please do not compare it to any other restaurant such as Thai, Japanese or Chinese typical restaurant as Teng is for people who prefer less salty and light food without having to deal with MSG allergy and stuffs.

Posted by: Andy101 at 7:14 pm on 4.Jan.2007

What if you are an Indian Singaporean? Does this still mean you cannot cook Asian? Most important is it does not matter if it is a Chinese, Indian or Malay in the kitchen - it is important if this particular person has been born and raised in a country and knows the tasteb and style of the food. And this brings the authenticity.

Posted by: "Malaysian" at 3:04 pm on 7.Jan.2007

I´ve been in Singapore and I also ate at Tengs and I tell you it is absolute not the same - it is partly terrible! And I agree with editor Michael- it is really a very strange smell inside the Restaurant! This is my opinion, if you like it or not!

If you love Singapore and the multi nationad multi racial kitchen of this beautiful city, try Tengs and you will love the food there, too. If you prefer average Munich chinese restaurants with menue cards showing hundreds of different (different?) dishes and if you love red lamps and aquariums and buddha statues you will go wrong in Tengs. Instead: delicious tasty Singaporean style food in a clean and sober and friendly atmosphere- that's Tengs. Go and try!
