Tamarind Indian Restaurant - Munich

Tamarind opened in October 2004 - located in the very heart of the city, in the Hotel der Oper right next to the Hofbräuhaus. It's a swanky looking joint and they announce themselves as an "Indian Gourmet Temple". Sounds promising.

Unfortunately, having tried the food, we now have to give it one big "Thumbs Down"! The curries were edible, tasted OK, but high quality they certainly were not. Usual story: one base sauce, the same for everything on the menu, dry meat which is pre-cooked and only makes contact with the sauce 4 minutes before serving. You'd be better off cooking your own.

The one redeeming feature is that they have a lunch menu where main dishes cost under €6. Mind you, all Indian restaurants offer pretty much the same lunchtime deal. Anyway, Tamarind is good to know if you work in the area and aren't feeling too fussy. Evening prices are €12 to €14 a dish.

Had a Chili Chicken here a couple of nights ago. Not the worst curry I've ever had, but it came close. As the review above says, the meat was dry and it looked like it had only been in the sauce for about 5 minutes. Even the sauce itself didn't seem to have been cooked for very long - the spices were not thorougly blended in, giving it an emulsion-like look. Service was acceptable, and the decor and overall atmosphere was pleasant. Oh, and this is one of the few indian restaurants I've been to where they served lime pickle with the papadoms without having to specifically ask for it. Although that's only a minor redeeming feature and not something that would tempt me to eat there again.

I tried this place too. Few houses down from Loggia. Opted instead for chicken buriyani and my chicken too was dry. The rice was well portioned, quite good, but I had to use the extra sauce they gave me to pep it up a bit. Well for the €12 I paid, I don't need to go back. I'd give it a 2 star out of 5 rating. There are lotso better Indian places around.
