I'm not that keen on Indian food, but I must be honest, the food at Swagat beyonds my expectation. Friendly staff, but if you expect to have your main course at 8 pm., order it at 7. Not sure why it's so slow.

This is the best indian restaurant in Munich. The set-up is proffessional, service attentive and the food is very good. Recommended.

We have a regular crowd from work that goes into Munich once every two months or so, anywhere from 6 to 20 people. "Curry Night" is a popular idea here, and Swagat seems to be the one restaurant that everyone agrees on. One suggestion: Order one less dish than there are people, if you have more than 5 people, there will be more than enough.

This is probably the best Indian place I've been to. It's up there with Ganga, Goa and Sitar. But I think Swagat is better than the rest. The service is fast. The prices are "average". The atmosphere is cozy and quaint. They seem to have a large outside seating area upstairs and the main part of the restaurant in downstairs. You feel like you're in a cellar. This is a "must" for all who like Indian. I recommend the Beef Saag and the Chana Masala.

best indian food here, england, usa. will advise upon trip to india. in any case, really fresh tasting food with a lot of zing! nice people running it who were extremely charming to our loud and rowdy table of twelve drunks and one dog, who, incidentally, ended up doing tricks for the staff at the end of the night.

Best one in South of Germany..I could say. Bit expensive...but for that the best quality. I being an Indian...have tried most of the indian restaurants in munich. Nothing can beat Swagat though. Also serves Mittagsmenu at half price. When going in the evening..I recommend reserving a table. Try out the Thali...u could get three different dishes for the price of one :)

This is a good mid-range quality Indian restaurant. Certainly not the best in Munich - Sitar, Ganga, and Goa have all had days when they have been better than Swagat.

Service was mediocre. Dhal soup starter was mediocre. Chicken vindaloo was mediocre and with no potato pieces in it. Rice was part of the meal. We were asked if we wanted pilau rice. We both accepted. We both got charged E3.30 extra. This restaurant falls below my minimum standard. I will not be going back there.

Based on experiences so far expectations were low - we were not disappointed... I felt other customers were getting better attention than my friend and myself. Drinks were supplied in small measures. To quote Ol' Big Mouth, I wouldn't say that the Onion Bhajis were one of the poorest I've tasted but they were in the bottom one. Popadom was ok, we were not charged but they charge 2.20 for two - some places you get an unlimited free supply. I had Bhunna Ghost (lamb) with pilau rice instead of Basmati. The dish was very good, the meat was cooked well and the sauce just as I like it - that was the only highlight. To find that we were charged 3.30 euro each for rice that was basically coloured basmati rice was the killer blow, as basmati is included in the price of the dish already and no allowance was made. Rama and Neu Delhi are much, much better by a considerable margin.

Namaste! The food here is sooo tasty that soon I'll be too fat again! Best of all: Tandoori chicken!!! Just taste it! Oh God, I'm getting hungry again right now! Ok, go there now and just eat!!!

Went to Swagat again last night. This time there were 13 of us. The food was excellent. On previous occasions I have found the service rather slow but last night was prompt and friendly. A couple of the speedy beer drinkers were too fast for the waiters though! I did find my lamb nilgiri was slightly lacking in lamb but when I pointed this out, the waiter agreed and took it back to the kitchen. A fresh dish laden with tender lamb was soon returned. In our opinion, the best curry in Munich.

As an Indian: there is no restaurant like this in Munich. This for service and food. Watch out: pay for what you ordered.

Great restaurant and food.... but why don't they make it non smoking. Just about to tuck into a yummy meal last night when the tables each side of us lit up their stinky cancer sticks. And 2 of them chain smoked non stop, even during their meal. Apart from opening the main door and freezing everyone in the place, there's no good ventilation.

Aaargh! After my last "review" in November, friends persuaded me and hubby to give Swagat another go. What a mistake that was. We reserved a table for 5 people two weeks before we went, last Wednesday. When we turned up, the place was heaving and we were told that our table wasn't ready and could we have a drink at the bar. Trouble was, the bar was 3-deep and there was no chance of being seen by the waiter, let alone served so we stood in the coat alcove by the main door. After 20 minutes we were told that our table was ready but it was only for 3 people, so would we mind squeezing together. YES, was our answer. We reserved for 5 and we want a table for 5. Take it or leave it, was the basic reply. It's Xmas, we're very busy and we have a private party in the back rooms. If you all squeeze in, it will be fine. So we did. And it wasn't fine. The people on the next table wanted to leave - we had to move our table and 3 chairs for them to get out. What a joke. I won't be wasting a single cent here ever again.

I would rate my top three Indian restaurants in Munich as below: 1 : Swagat 2 : Sitar 3 : GOA

Posted by: "Anonymous" at 3:59 pm on 5.Apr.2006

Grumpy waiter and non-fresh food. I wouldn't go there again. Also too expensive.

Posted by: "Anonymous" at 12:02 pm on 29.Jul.2006

The best Indian restaurant in Munich! But they have problems with the reservations, they don't seem very well organized with this. But the food is excellent.

Posted by: "Laura" at 10:12 pm on 27.Aug.2006

Service was quite slow (people arriving after us received their food well before us), but the food was excellent. The Naan bread and rice were the best I've had in Munich in a long time, and my chili chicken was perfect. Prices seemed to be a little higher than other restaurants.

Posted by: "Curry Monsta" at 12:32 pm on 14.Sep.2006

The bengan berta and chicken sag were really lame (last week) compared to what I have had in the San Francisco Bay Area & in London. It really tasted as though the kitchen was unable to find the right ingredients, although I am sure that is not the case.

Posted by: "luc kojio" at 5:13 pm on 18.Sep.2006

Well, not such a a good experience this week. The naan bread was dry and my dish was far too salty. I can't remember what it was called but it was no. 535 on the special menu.

Posted by: "Curry Monsta" at 11:49 am on 23.Sep.2006

We had a not so pleasant experience there the other night. After requesting a table in not a smokey corner we were taken into a smoke filled room. When we decided to leave because of the smoke another customer got up and said that he too would like to complain about the smoke. The waiters said that the manager was going to come and tried to get us to sit down rather than leave. At the end of the night we neither saw or spoke to the manager who could quite easily manage a smoke-free section given the design of the restaurant. The food on the whole was very heavy and the prawn dish was a rip off with no large prawns but tiny cubes in an over rich sauce which was not very good. One can honestly give the place a skip.

Food is amazing but the service is slow but very friendly. Veg and non-veg dishes are wonderful. Food can tend to be a little oily, just tell them to make it less oily. Chilli chicken is super spicy but my fav!! Be sure to call ahead for reservations, this place tends to get packed quickly.

hi we had a great experinece at this restuarant, we are 15 indian guys & girls.. came into this restuarant,... tired & hungry.. We got a good welcome from.. manager.. and a specail table organized for us..the Thali was too good.. especially the panner butter masala.. i should say they serve enough food that people could manage.. by ordeing less.. very cost effective.. too... worth the money spent.. we recieved a complimentary drink & indian tea for the group :-))))

Posted by: "citi-gang" at 3:11 pm on 24.Apr.2007

very costly...not recommended for normal budget people.. we had to end up without eating...even normal roti costs 5 euro !!!

Posted by: "govind" at 5:55 pm on 29.May.2007

Poor food with poor spice levels. Requests for hot food simply result in lots of chilli powder. Very inflexible with special requests - I asked for roti instead of rice with my takeaway and was told it was not possible. Surbahar is only 10 minutes away and offers far better food and service.

Posted by: "curry king" at 9:32 am on 30.May.2007

Last night we waited over 1 hour for the bill (asked for it 3 times) Were ignored quite a few times waiting for menus/drinks/refills. But the food was excellent. We ordered a variety of dishes and they were all fantastic. (especially the Rogan Josh - yum!) Don't know if I will go back there though. Service atrocious!

Over the years Swagat has become more & more popular. Real Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi restaurants were few and far betwen in Germany, Switzerland & Austria until fairly recently, and it has taken time for the "continentals" to get used to the idea that Indian dishes are often at there best when the chef is allowed to use spices to their full potential. I remember in the early 90's spicy foods in continental Indian outlets could often be quite tame compared to what we are used to in the UK and the States (this also applied to Tex-Mex and Spanish orientated restaurants too). Now the Germans have really got a taste for the Indian food and as a consequence most of the good Indian restaurants are overflowing most evenings. This is where Swagat really suffers nowadays. The place is now too small, badly ventilated, and unfortunately the service has gone drastically downhill over the past 2 years. It has also become rather expensive, and the litle additions to the bill (for drinks ordered but not delivered for example)are sadly a regular occurence according to most of my Munich friends. I myself have stopped going there since my last visit was aborted after being offered a table for 4 despite having reserved for 7. Like an earlier reviewer, the place is too cramped and tight to be expected to fit 7 people round a 4 seater table. Swagat is probably too expensive and, dare I say, a little too exclusive nowadays to be considered good value for money anymore. There are plenty of other good (even better) Indian restaurants to visit in Munich nowadays, and one shouldn't have to pay a premium just to sit in a restaurant opposite the Prinzregententheater. So look around (Neuhausen/Lehel/even Giesing) and you might be surprised. For myself, Swagat is no longer an option unless it is for lunch and someone else is paying.

Food was OK this time (I had the Chili Chicken) but the service was very slow and the Naan bread was undercooked. Overall not worth paying the higher prices.

Posted by: "Curry Monsta" at 10:00 am on 10.Aug.2007

terribly poor slow service. compares up there with worst i've ever experienced. shoddy. and mindnumbing (loud) music in background did your heid in after a while. pods.

Went there for lunch yesterday - had Punjabi lamb curry for 6.40€ (comes with rice and small salad/soup). Portion, price, and taste were good, but the service was terrible. Waiter asked us to repeat our order at least twice, didn't look like he was listening, and couldn't even be bothered to look at us while speaking. The service was also slow. Outdoor patio is very noisy because it is next to a busy street. All in all, go to Swagat if you just want a quick and inexpensive meal (weekday lunch only), but don't go for the overall experience - it is disappointing. There are better indian restaurants in Munich (like "Tandoori").

Best Indian food I've had yet in Munich...and the atmosphere is great too...highly recommended.

Posted by: germanyshelley at 12:37 pm on 3.Dec.2007

Tasteless food without a hint of Indian seasoning. Waiters forgot order and the first main course arrived 20 minutes before the last! Will stick to Surbihar just around the corner. Better value taste and service.

Posted by: "curryking" at 7:38 am on 6.Dec.2007

Last evening i was there with a few colleagues. We had reserved in advance and faced no problems. The service was quite decent and friendly (except at the very end, when the waiters forgot to bring our after-dinner "schnapps"). I was very impressed by the ambience (lighting and music). The food was tasty and very indian (i come from india). We had ordered a wide variety of curries, tandoori dishes and each one of us was satisfied. Maybe some of you had bad experiences in this restaurant, but yesterday everything went fine. i'll definitely go back for more.

Posted by: "som" at 8:02 am on 30.Mar.2008

Service improved lots since my last review (July'07) I have since been back twice. The food was fantastic. We ordered a variety of dishes and they were all very tasty and well prepared. They had quite a few extra people serving during the Saturday night rush so no long waits like before. Yummy food & good service. I will be back!

Posted by: melrose at 6:39 pm on 8.Apr.2008

I went on on the weekend. Not so sure as I have been there on numerous occassions and always loved it, but the food was just not quite right. Forget the thalis i think, go for a main dish outright!

Posted by: "Ruby" at 8:36 pm on 9.Apr.2008

Although the food is OK, and it is the one place in Munich where something directly off the menu has made me sweat (the lamb vindaloo), I am sick of being ripped off at this place. Nearly 7 euros for a bottle of water! And one time (as there was an indian person in our group), they suggested they would make us more authentic starters. They weren't a special dish at all, just a variety of tandoori MAIN dishes charged at full price. On top of this, the staff can be pretty rude, so I won't be going back in a hurry.

Posted by: daniel*** at 4:42 pm on 1.Jul.2010

Agree with above commént. Service is very poor so the food. I don´t understand why this place is so popular inspite of bad food quality and service. One should twice think before going.

Posted by: "christ" at 9:37 pm on 12.Oct.2010

Great food and very friendly service. I enjoyed the lovely atmosphere... By far the best and most original Indian restaurant in Munich!

Well! We were there for a very intimate Curry Night - only five attendees. Considering that Swagat rates itself among the best Indian restaurants in town I am seriously disappointed. If this had been my first Curry Night it may well have been my last, the service was abysmal, the rice was cold, the food was slow in coming and the final invoice was wrong by 1 main, 1 beer and 2 Mangoschorle. Obviously, the restaurant was full. However, that is no excuse for neglecting to bring one hungry eater's main until he had reminded the waiter twice. When asked how much longer we others would have to wait for our orders, one waiter's reaction was "Gern!" as he was turning away. The other waiter was a bit quicker on the uptake, and after app. 50 minutes (+/- 5 minutes) the mains were brought. At some stage, when bringing the drinks (see below for details), one of the waiters could have given us an ETA, begging our pardon for the extraordinarily long waiting time. As it was, tables who had ordered well after us were served first, and not with anything that had been simmering on the back of a stove but with freshly made tandoori fish (overwhelmingly fragrant). Getting drinks was equally difficult, either they were not brought, or the wrong drinks were brought, resulting on no less than three wrong drinks on the final bill. Luckily, there were only four of us by that time so that going through the separate items was not a difficult task. The chappy who seemed to be the head-waiter was not pleased when we requested separate bills, so one of the minions sat down and went through the final reckoning with us - a task made just that much more difficult as our early departure had already paid up but his meal and drink items were still on our bill ... However, saving grace, once the food arrived it ranged from good to very good to honestly the best Indian food I have had all year - tender, succulent, slightly smoky botti kebab with a fruity sauce, fresh naan and fresh cabbage. The rice was decent once they gave us hot rice, not a lukewarm pile of uninspired starchy glob, but barely infused with any spices. Three out of five stars, two and a half of which go to the food.

Posted by: sarabyrd at 11:02 pm on 29.Dec.2010

Bland food, was expecting a little flavour at least, poor service and they brought the wrong dishes, we were unable to tell which was which, chicken or lamb, I think it was mystery meat, won´t go back

Had a reservation at swagat for a group of 12 people in late October 2010 on a saturday night. Upon arrival the entry and bar area was overcrowded with people waiting for their reserved tables. Would we have been a small group we would have left right away. We had to wait for around 40 minutes until we were seated. With the restaurant clearly booked beyond its capacity, service was slow. It took a long time to order(more)drinks. A main course salad was served way ahead of the rest of the main courses. The restaurant needs to improve its planning. The food is not that superior to other indian restaurants that it is worth to endure this type of customer "service".

Posted by: Joe Franken at 2:49 pm on 6.Mar.2011

We had a reservation for 12 people, it was the middle of the week at 21:00. We got a great table and the atmosphere was very nice. Food was good and I don't think anyone went home hungry... BUT the service was very very slow. Even after we allready had food on our table, whenever someone wanted to order another drink or more bread or rice, it took ages to get their attention, and even longer for whatever we ordered to arrive at the table. And that went on even after all the tables around us were empty and closing time was approaching. There are a lot of good Indian restaurants in the city. We went to this one because people said it was one of the best. The food was indeed very pleasing, but for their prices they should really give better service...
