Substanz - Munich

Seeing as no one has posted anything about it - Substanz is a small venue where there is live music almost every day of the week. It caters to the "alternative" crowd and they put on allsorts of local bands. There are only a few tables and seats and you have to order your beer at the bar - no table service. It's cheap and nasty. The way I like it.

Agreed - I really like it too! It's totally unpretentious and the owner is also nice (Jürgen). I even did my first (and probably last!) karaoke there. :-)

This place is a lot of fun and very relaxed, but don't expect to ever see it as it looks in the picture above, because every time I've been in there (I used to go there often), the haze from cigarette smoke coupled with horrible ventilation was so thick my eyes would burn. It's a great place for after Oktoberfest because it stays open really late and is walking distance from Theresienwiese.

They also have a poetry slam every second sunday evening. Overall it's a cool place. I go here sometimes as well.

Substanz is a cool place. I performed there for the first time in 1992. I'd like to play there again but I don't know how to contact Jurgen. Does anyone have an email for him? David Rodriguez

I remember tripping in Substanz about 14 years ago. There were about 14 of us, all on acid. It was one hell of a trip, I can tell you. Not that I'd recommend anyone taking acid,well, unless it was really good, but a great place for unsigned bands to showcase their talent.

It has been said that in Germany, humour is no laughing matter!! That's where Substanz comes in because it's also the venue for The English Comedy Club which is a great night out.
