A classic sushi place. The location is amazing, the service spectacularly brusque. It is very small and it is just 10 meters away from the Hofbräuhaus and the big Planet Hollywood in this very touristy block.

Do you think a sushi place belongs here? No, neither do we (although there's another one nearby, Sushi Duke, so maybe it's a Japanese thing for all the visitors to the Hofbräuhaus?) but it is a great place. Always packed. And sadly, you cannot book. Beware when walking out of this place that you are likely to hear the following refrain - "Excuse me, can you take a picture of us?". Try using phrases like "Swedish porno!" to make them smile; at least it will be a photo to remember.

Shoya itself is not generally full of tourists, which is easily understandable; you are a tourist in Munich and you have the choice between a cramped looking sushi bar and the World's Most Famous Beer Hall? Tough call.

I can't stay away from this place. The sushi is super fresh and the service is very friendly and attentive. Whenver I've been in, "real" Japenese people have been there too, which I take as a good sign. I usually am pretty lazy and just order one of the pre-made combo plates. SO good. Really...seafood is so fresh that it melts in your mouth. Atmosphere is nice. Bad music playing, however.

There was a branch of this place on Gabelsbergerstrasse (U2 Theresienstrasse) which closed down for a while, but apparently it is back open and run by the same people that run the place on Orlandostrasse. All their food (at Gabelsbergerstr.) is excellent and attractive to look at. Best sushi I've had in Munich.

Shoya have recently (well, in the last couple of months) opened a Japanese food store opposite their Imbiss on Frauenstr. They have quite a wide range of Japanese foods - dried, fresh, frozen - and at the moment they have a special offer on the dried seaweed that you use to make sushi: 1EUR per pack!

The Shoya Markt sells bacon! Saw it the other day, went back this afternoon to buy some, and have just treated myself and my girlfriend to a full-on fat-bastard english breakfast. Unfortunately the bacon wasn't quite as good as it looked - a bit too thin, and not salty enough. A perfectly adequate substitute for the real thing though, considering the state of the other stuff you can get here in Munich.

Good Bacon: Fa. Stadler Fränkische Wurstspezialitäten u. Feinkost 775804, 80469 München, Dreimühlenstr. 14 (Isarvorstadt, Schlachthofviertel)

Err... have been recently educated as to "bacon". British bacon is different. Stadler has bacon as Americans think of it, which is great, but maybe not what you Brits are pining for. Try it anyway though! ;)

I have always enjoyed my food here and the locals I know are loyal to this place. It's nice to take out or eat in, although I prefer to eat there in the small, cozy dining room, and look at all the pictures on the wall... yum.

i am a huge shoya fan .... although, just be careful with the take-out sushi (from the sushi window)!! last weekend, we had a bout of food poisoning from the maki-sushi. who knows how long it had been sitting there????

I fell in love with Shoya in 1997. It has always been fun and tastes great! I love watching those guys making their nigiris, temakis, and all the rest. Ms. Michie Kosaka hasn't changed since I've known her. The spinach in sesam, sashimi, soben, fried oysters and... mmmh! Dreaming of a day when i'll be back! Dear Chefin Kosaka, thank you so much!

Well.. It just goes to show you that no matter how bad something is, there will always be someone to love it. I went to this place several times when I first arrived in Munich because I love Japanese food and didn't know better. In truth, the standard of the Sushi here is closer to the worst I've had than to the best, but hey this is Munich so let's be generous and just say it's average. The service however... well, I'm sorry people but every time I went there for an evening meal with my partner it was so obvious they wanted us to sit, eat, PAY and then leave as fast as possible so they could squeeze the next clueless sucker in. Awful people and actually, now that I recollect my thoughts, the last time I walked out of there, I was thinking to myself that this place is a disgrace to the fine tradition that is Japanese Cuisine. I best love Willy's entry (above).. Yeah right, great place, apart from the food poisoning.

We had an awful experience last night at the new Shoya in Ehrengutstr. After waiting for an hour and a half for our sushi (mind you the place was by no means full) only half the order arrived without wasabi and ginger and after asking about the rest of our order the chef told us that it was given to another table. By this time we had waited 2 hours and decided to get the bill and leave. Our guests ordered the tapanyaki shrimps and received 2 cooked pieces and two flatened burnt and inedible shrimp with their shells on for 26€. They were not happy. What a disappointment. Pity considering the waiters and cooks were japanese.

Went to Shoya (the one next to the Hofbrauhaus) last night with a friend and it was awful ! Food was cold, tasteless and even when my friend asked for tea they said they didn't have any : Yet there are 3 types clearly stated on the menu ! I will not be going back !

This is easily one of the worst sushi retaurants on the planet. Ask yourself how long those sushi boxes have been sitting on the front counter...

I can only comment on 2 Shoyas in Munich where I have dined at a number of times during the last 1 year: the one on Orlandostrasse (avoid this one like a plague) and the one on Frauenstrasse (recommended). I agree with xuxa's comment that no matter how bad something is, there will always be someone loving it. I guess these people didn't know any better. In my first 6 months in Munich I only knew Shoya on Orlandostrasse, I had not tried any other Japanese/sushi place. Never really bothered having sushi in Munich at that time as they usually look average and unappealing despite the fact that I am a huge sushi fan back home in Jakarta. So occasionally I would drop by Shoya opposite Hofbrauhaus when I'm in city center. The rice dishes and the gyu miso are usually quite OK, but as xuxa said: the service can be quite unfriendly. It is at numerous times so obvious that they just want us to sit, eat, pay then leave as fast as possible Yes, they (the old lady at the cashier and the waiter boys) can be quite awful. I don't know if we can call them a disgrace, I mean, let's just hope they just don't know any better on the importance of treating their patrons nicely. There was one afternoon when I brought a group of customers on a shopping tour around Marienplatz and I thought that Shoya might be a good idea since they serve quite good rice dishes favored by my customers. What happened? One of my customers, who happened to be the first one walking through the curtained door, was promptly driven away by the old lady. He was just about to ask how long they can wait, but he was rudely turned away. I never return. The Shoya on Orlandostrasse may have a nice dining place but it has no heart. Alas, given its location, it will always be full of people who don't know better enjoying meals. For about the same menu in a bit smaller place but much friendlier service, take a longer stroll through Viktualienmarkt to Shoya on Frauenstrasse. It's always been a safe bet for me whenever I crave for Japanese. I'm still kicking myself for not discovering this one much earlier. I ended up not getting the chance to survey a lot of other Japanese eateries, but if you're hungry and have a huge craving for sushi, spend a bit more (around eur25 for all-you-can-eat buffet and drink) at Fuji running sushi in front of the Muenchener Freiheit bus terminal. My friends and I always order sashimi, mandarin oranges and ice cream that are not put on the running belt. Always been jolly good time filling up with their sushi, sashimi and desserts.

The shoya grocery is store is apparently closing due to lack of customers. Expect the prices in the other shops to go up now they have no competition.

Stay away from Shoya at Orlandostrasse. Bad service and attitude. I shall never visit this terrible place again! The Shoya at Frauenstrasse has much better service and good japanese food.

First the CON! CON: - The menu is *messy*! But photos on the walls help you choose. - It is very *tiny* but cosy inside, so don't bring your luggage or your double-pass along (I seen some customers trying to make their way through the place dragging around such things!) PRO: - The *best* Sushi in town, with - *larger* servings as usual, - with *freshly cooked rice* and - with nice *warm food* too (tempura, etc.). - The food comes very *quickly*, like in a take away, but taste better and fresher than in any other Sushi I tried in Munich. - There are nice and uncommon sushi combinations: eel special menu for instance... Many Japanese customers too... Conclusion: It is well worth its money!

I was screamed at when I ordered a second Sake. I don't care how good the sushi is, nothing is worth being treated like garbage. I'm still paying for the food and I don't want it ripped out of my hands while I'm still eating it. Avoid this place.

The bad service in Shoya is so famous. Never go there.

Posted by: "aaaaaa" at 4:57 pm on 3.Aug.2007

Oh, the service in this place is so spectacularly bad that perhaps on days you are feeling particularly masochistic, it might feel like a real treat. They actually tried to move us from a 3-person table to a 2-person one, the money-grasping frauds. When we left in a huff, the old lady told us that thele wele meny other Japanese lestaulants in town. Way to go, Shoya!

Posted by: "Sabine" at 10:20 am on 3.Oct.2007

I don't know what you people expect, but I've always seen only good service at Shoya on Orlandostrasse as well as the one on Frauenstrasse. Remember to tip. My favorite sushi place in Munich.

Posted by: m1tra at 10:37 am on 4.Oct.2007

By the way, has the entire team on Frauenstrasse changed?

Posted by: "chef" at 10:00 pm on 4.Oct.2007

We went to the new Shoya yesterday for lunch, it's moved a couple of doors along from the old place on the corner. The service was terrible, after being made to stand and wait for over 5 minutes in the doorway when clearly there were 2 tables available, our expectations were low. But after ordering our food things improved, the food was fresh and delicious, miso soup for 2, edamame beans, spicy tuna roll, fried chicken, rice and gyoza all for EUR20, which is pretty good value. Shame that the old bird running the place seems to have a thing against seating 2 people at the tables set for 3 or 4 respectively, they managed to turn away at least 3 other couples while we were there and left these other tables empty - apparently waiting to make a few extra bucks which is completely ridiculous considering the majority of people walking in were in 2's...oh well I'm sure they will learn. Great food though!

I will never go this place again. The food was terrible and not to mention their service! The waiters never smiled and didn't know how to service people. After all the disappointment, I asked if we could pay separately and the old lady at the cashier shouted at me, "You figure out yourself!" throwing the receipt towards me, which I have never encountered in any other Japanese or German restaurants. The cooks are not Japanese (no offence) so they do not know what REAL Japanese food tastes like. It is more worth having a bratwurst with semmel at Viktualienmarkt!

Posted by: "cheers" at 4:53 pm on 22.Nov.2007

Shoya is so famous for bad service. They are not Japanese, so they do not know the service quality of Japan. Do not go there. No worth to pay

Posted by: "Thomas" at 10:48 pm on 23.Nov.2007

AA very tiny place across the Hofbräuhaus (almost weird). But my colleague who spent one year in Japan recommended this. Never had a bad meal there, quite to the contrary. Except for a serving of Unagi (eel) I typically don’t eat Sushi at Shoya. I order traditional Japanese food and loved each and every item I had ordered.

Well... After trawling through the comments about the Japanese restaurants scattered around Munich we decided upon Shoya "Frauen Str" and here is how it went. Sat down ourselves as the waiter was busy with a take away order, then he shouted hier essen ? any way he came almost immediatly back to take our order, which of course were not ready to place. We did however order some beers and edamame.... he then came back every few seconds untill we ordered then we never saw him again. The edamame didn't arrive (how hard is this to prepare??) then our mains came and they had used crab stick or seafood extender for the Aussies out there in the sushi! any how the agadashi tofu was pretty good the sushi was passable, no ginger or q spoon for the tofu came which took me 10 minutes to get the attention of the waiter but it eventuqlly came. After all this we asked for the bill and he said stand up, we were not ready to get up but were pressured into as he started to tally it up. Then he hit us with the amount, way more than we had estimated. We quickly did a mental calculation and it was off, we stood at the door looking and feeling stupid but used our phone to re do it, still wrong. We spoke to the waiter only to be told he was too busy to check it and that he was right. I was getting close to losing it at this annoying man so we left. Annoyed, disgruntled and hoping munich has somewhere the lovelly kind if service that Japanese are so well known for!!
