Shere Punjab - Indian Restaurant Munich

Yet another new Indian restaurant. They're popping up like mushrooms these days. Shere Punjab - new to Leopoldstrasse in the heart of Schwabing. Until a few days ago this used to be a Greek joint. Apart from the staff, it has not changed very much. They just replaced the sign on the outside and that's about it. Doesn't look a particularly inviting location. I haven't tasted the food yet but it's probably similar to the cheap and cheerful stuff they serve up at Mugal near Karlsplatz. Probably good for that quick curry fix after a long session at Murphys across the road.

Shere Punjab
Leopoldstr. 43, Munich Schwabing
U-Bahn U3/6 Münchener Freiheit

A branch of Shere Punjab has opened in Zweibrückenstrasse in the city center - don't know the street number. From the name I suspect its related to the Shere Punjab in Schwabing (which I've not tried). Now I love indian food, even in its English incarnation, but so far, and not for wont of trying, I have found no Munich place that can hold its own. This place is worse than most. I almost always try the chicken tikka massala, which if done well can be really great. Here I had to pick out the bits of chicken 'cos they were too tough to eat! Also the sauce was just a kind of salt flavour.
Perhaps they do good veggie dishes, but I for one am not going back to find out.

Do not go to any of the Shere-Punjabs in town. It is definitely a few bucks cheaper but the food is hardly worth a euro.

Its cheap and cheerfull if you ask me. If you want a drink and a curry for 10€ then its perfect.

I just polished off one of their chicken tikka massalas. Far from 'tough to eat' the chicken was perfectly cooked and plentiful! We also had the mixed vegetable curry which, along with their naans, was also very good. Hey, for the price... you can't go too far wrong.

Do not expect anything fancy. The prices are cheap and the food is better than Mughal.

A few French friends of mine went here and were very impressed by the food and the service. Now French curries aren't as hot as those you get in the UK, but they do know good food when they taste it! Definately one to try

I have had two vegetarian dishes here and was VERY happy with them. The vegetables were fresh and crisp and the sauce was very flavourful. The prices are very good (5 - 7,50) for main dishes, and the "to-go" portions are HUGE! Nice to have something afordable and tasty on Leopoldstr.

The food here is great!! The Chicken biryani and other chicken dishes are spicy and very tasty.

Have to agree, the food is Great! And the prices are the first reasonable ones I've seen in Munich for Indian food! 7 Euros for a generous portion for dinner. Decoration is getting better at the Leopold location! They have 3 others (One in Rosenheimerplatz, another between Isar Tor and the Deutsches Museum and one near Hbf.) You can tell them by the blue lights. Enjoy!

the best indian food i ever had in munich, prices are fantastic. very fast and nice service. we also had very very tasty cocktails for just euro 4,50 great place!

After being here last nite I have to agree here! Best Indian (madras) I have ever eaten in Munich. Great service, hugh portions and great value for money. One I would highly recommend

Have eaten here a lot and love it....had a dish the other day and it was really bad. I was going to just let it slide because it can happen....but the waiter came over and asked if it was good and i told him the truth. He said he noticed the look of the meal as he brought it out and had a hunch that something was not right. He offered me a free drink, dessert, or a free meal and promised to never let it happen again....I did not even complain!! Now that is service!

i have been to this testaurant food is delicious

i've now eaten in all 5 shere punjab restaurants in munich. the food is very good. butter chicken served with rice for 6 euro, in other indian restaurants i saw it for 12 euro. Super Indian food and cheap prices - that's shere punjab!

They have a branch on Zweibrückenstr (just down the road from the Deutsches Museum) and I've been there for lunch a couple of times. First time I had the Chili Chicken, which was excellent. Very flavoursome and nicely spicy. However today I had the Chicken Jalfrezi, which was very disappointing. Looked and tasted like a Chicken Tikka Masala; the only difference being that it had carrots & peas in it. Carrots & peas in a Chicken Jalfrezi? Never seen that before. What can you expect for 5 euros though?

Posted by: "Curry Monsta" at 4:14 pm on 1.Jun.2005

Sher & Punjab is a great place to go. The food is delicious (if it is not hot enough for you...just ask to get it hotter!)and the atmosphere is easy (not a snob venue at all...which I actually hate). Moreover you can speak with the owner in german, indian or....italian (what I do), as he lived and worked two years in Itay. Don't miss it!!!

Posted by: "Laura" at 4:37 pm on 15.Jun.2005

I went the other day and the Jalfrezi was milder than a Korma. In fact, it was milder than plain yoghurt. As inflatablewoman says, for under €10 for a beer and cheapo curry, it's not bad. But certainly nothing to rave about like some of the comments above.

Posted by: "Edwina Curry" at 8:57 pm on 15.Jun.2005

Being an Indian and knowing to a certain extent the food, I found the curries terrible! I would not even term it as being a curry. I really do not understand all the raves about the food. Looks like the people are not going for quality but only for the prices. Will definitely not go back.

Posted by: "Jasbir" at 10:55 am on 27.Jun.2005

My suspicion (and it is nothing more than a suspicion) is that the restauranteurs, or friends of the restauranteurs, are posting rave reviews themselves. Only one way to find out for sure. Go eat there yourself. If it's bad, you don't have to go back. Personally, I don't rate the food here very highly. But as mentioned, it's ok, it's cheap, and it is very near where I live, so I'll continue to return. It's still way better than McDonalds, Burger King.

Posted by: "Edwina Curry" at 11:09 am on 27.Jun.2005

sry laura, the owner is not the man who speaks italian.he is only an normal waiter.the owner is a other guy, who dont works as a waiter

Posted by: "thomas" at 3:16 am on 8.Aug.2005

Tasteless and over-priced. Ordered the vegetable korma as a take-out, so I could watch them cook it. Menu says fresh vegetables. In fact frozen veggies, a few spices, almond slivers, raisins and cream is their version of korma, which comes nowhere near to a real korma.

I sometimes get a take-away from the one on Rosenheimerstraße. The food quality is not up to restaurant standard (cf. Ganesha a few yards further down Rosenheimerstr.), nonetheless adequate for the price - good enough for a take-away, but I wouldn't sit myself in there to eat though.

Posted by: oli2000 at 2:14 pm on 13.Sep.2005

I've been to the one in Rosenheimerstraße. The meat was precooked and dry and just dumped in the source. Awful. One of the worst I have had in Munich. A shame, as it used to be a passable kebab restaurant.

i go 3 times a week , sometimes 4 times to shere punjab a week.i usually go to leopoldstr, because i live in schwabing. ilike the food there, the service, and the atmosphare.and i think many of the bad comments here, are coming from other indian restaurants. for 10 euro one drink, one salad and a chicken curry!

Posted by: "peter" at 12:59 pm on 4.Oct.2005

i like shere punjab. i usually have dinner there after work.sometimes i meet shere puunjab on friday or saturday with friends, they play good indian remixes and you can have a good party there with cheap drinks.i like this place......byebye

shere punjab in innsbruck is the best

Posted by: "someone" at 10:24 am on 29.Nov.2005

Decent cheap food, not great, but consistent. Mild by UK standards, but for a quick inexpensive meal it will do. I get take-away from the one on Zweibrückenstr, but only when my wife is out of town - she doesn't think much of their vegetarian dishes, but I like the vindaloo enough.

Posted by: "jandzero" at 7:45 pm on 20.Dec.2005

sher punjab at leopoldstreet is a great place....super indian food, really super .i know the cook, he worked in lot of hotels before. cocktails are cheap .music is good.....

Posted by: "sergio" at 3:34 pm on 11.Feb.2006

I find the food great especially for the price. The food isn't up to Sitar's satndards, but it is definitely good.

shere punjab is a great place. i like it very much... especially at weekend.at weekend theres a good atmosphare, with nice woman.thx

I went to the Shere Punjab in Leopold Strasse. The food (I tasted the Tandoori Chiken and Nan) is not bad compared to the price. However one of the persons there were extremely rude. I ordered chicken soup and he gave me vegetable soup and when I told him he just dismissed me by saying it is chicken soup. However, when I have finished the soup the other person came to take away the bowls and asked me how was it and then I told him that perhaps it was not a chicken soup, he enquired from inside and then found out that it was their mistake and gave us a complimentary Nan.

Posted by: "sneha" at 8:41 pm on 26.Mar.2006

Tried the one in Isartor a few times, Not always consistent also the guys are rude at times. One particular occasion our order was not served for a long time then when my friend enquired about it he replied in quite a rude way and worst was when he served us the dishes they were extremely spicy food. We felt that this was done on purpose. In the future I would rather spend a few extra Euros and get better food elsewhere.

at the weekend i was in shere punjab leopoldstr. the cocktails are very good.and every cocktail only 4.50!!its unbelievable...

Went to Shere Punjab in Leopoldstraße a couple of times. Not a big selection, but the food has a very good quality-vs-price ratio. Jalfrezi (my personal favourite) sometimes more, sometimes less spicy; this may explain the differences in some of the posts above. :-) Once I went to another restaurant, IIRC also called "Shere Punjab", between Hauptbahnhof and Stachus. Unfortunately I can't find it on Google right now, but I'm pretty sure about the name -- and no, it was NOT the Mughal. Also quite competitive prices, but the chicken tikka in _that_ branch was far from being good. But as I said, the Leopoldstraße branch is quite good.

Ate at the leopoldstrasse shop (opposite Karstadt as I think they have one on the same side as Karstadt) the Tuesday after Easter. Food was average. We ordered popadoms as a starter and waited nearly 30 minutes. They arrived with the naan breads we had ordered for the main course. Couple of minutes later, the waiter asked if it was ok to bring the main course as it was ready.Mine was cold and when I mentioned this they tried to tell me it was ok. Eventually they took it away and presumably blasted it in the micro wave. the waiter looke a bit pissed off cos I didnt leave a tip!!! Wouldnt go back.

One chicken tandoori, one okra/lamb curry, one mango lassi and an apfelshorle for ~23euros. Food was great, speedy uncomplicated service, all around thumbs up. Yum.

Posted by: imannah at 5:15 pm on 8.Jun.2007

cheap, bad and unhealthy. yes it is cheap and that shows. Been to the one in Karlplatz....will never ever go again.

Posted by: RakishRam at 9:22 pm on 22.Oct.2007

This place is terrible! The food should be cheaper for the kind of crap they cook. They hide the taste of stale veggies and meat under a mountain of cream. As an Asian, I was so embarrassed to see people actually "dining out" at this place (and fighting to pay the bill too :) ) Fellas, usually you don't drink alchol with Indian food, so use the money saved to go to a better place.

Posted by: Element2082 at 12:19 pm on 23.Oct.2007

The food it fine. The service is pathetic. It's more than pathetic. I along with my friends went there at 7:45 one evening. We had to wait ages to get the food to us. Literally 1:20 hours went before we got the food. When we asked, the reason they gave was - "There is this other team sitting at the other table, and their bill is more than yours. Hence your priority is less". Don't ever go to this place if you value your time. Sandeep.

Posted by: "Never go there" at 12:46 am on 7.Jan.2008

I went to the Sher-e=Punjab near the U-Bahn U3/6 Münchener Freiheit. The food was delicious! We ordered Palak Paneer, Nan and Dal. I am from Panjab, India, and I can tell you that the taste was authentic and flavorful without being too spicy. The service was great too.

Posted by: "San Panjabi" at 8:35 pm on 2.Jul.2008

Cheaper than the competition, but not what I understand as being an Indian restaurant. Cauliflower cheese.. Service ok, food poor.

Posted by: Qwertz at 6:14 pm on 13.Jul.2008

Food's hit-and-miss, to say the least. I've had lovely Chilli Chicken there, I've had shitty Chilli Chicken there. I've had nicely presented, tasty meals with crap service. I've had a "Vindaloo" sauce with 3 lumps of Kryptonite masquerading as chicken, with a lump of rice on a plate that I was told was a Chicken Vindaloo, extra hot, which was about as hot as Zsa Zsa Gabors incontinence suit, and a very friendly and pretty waitress anticipating our every need. I like going there for the Russian Roulette effect, in terms of service and food. And the prices are more than reasonable. The Schorles outprice the beer as well.

Posted by: Punchbear at 1:08 pm on 8.Aug.2008

this is not Indian food. this is just thrash that is served to the ones who have no idea of the indian kitchen. only for the ones that go there for the cheap prices. one has to think - if the prices are that low, what is the quality like? been there, tried it, and will not be back.

Posted by: "indian cook" at 1:44 am on 9.Aug.2008

Do not go here if you value your stomach. I was passing by their Munchner Freiheit branch and the sight of ghastly pink glop masquerading as chicken tikka masala was nauseating.
