Schumann's Tagesbar - Maffeistrasse 6, Munich, Germany

After nearly twenty years of running the city's most renowned bar (Schumman's New York Bar), Charlie Schumann has decided to branch out into broad daylight by opening his new bar/cafe in the heart of Munich's richest shopping centre, the all-new Fünf Höfe.

The standards are the same; the service is impeccable, the music is set at a thoughtful level, it has a clean, simple feel and the patrons are the same mix of young and old, rich and poor. The difference is they are dressed for shopping, and there's a lot of fur on display.

It's an envy-ridden place, with lots of darting looks checking you out, although doubtless it will become the place for the chattering classes to see and be seen during the day. It's doubtful for meeting people, the atmosphere is wrong, and it tends to get quieter in the evening anyway. For a quick break from shopping though, it's about as Nouveau Munich as you can get.

Arrogant service, high priced, and did I mention unbelievably arrogant waiters yet? Personally I expect a minimum courtesy from any service staff. Don't expect any friendly behavior here. And believe you me, neither fair food nor hard liquor can make up for this sort of bad manners. If you wish to punish yourself with being humiliated by some bozos who think they are doing you a favor for even looking at you, you're going to have a blast of a time at this place. For me it will remain a once in a lifetime experience.

The waiters are not arrogant to regular customers they know, nor to customers who they know have lots of money. They are deliberately rude to all other customers so as to keep them away. Schumann wants only a certain type of guest. They never actually throw people out, that would be uncouth. Instead they treat you like muck so that you never want to come back. There are enough monied arrogant people in Munich who enjoy moving with other monied arrogant people that the bar is never empty. Fact of life I'm afraid. Take it or leave it.

I have to say, I've been to Schumann's Tagesbar quite a few times, both on my own and in the company of another TTer. I have always received excellent service... the waiter was polite, attentive, and even remembered what kind of wine I liked. It's possible that, as is the case in many bars, being a semi-regular face does help - but I can't honestly recall a single instance at Schumann's in which anyone was rude to me.

Schumann's picks & chooses its customer base so spot on comments, except for that last one. You either ooze with snobbery & money or are long-legged and blond which fits well into the Schumann concept. Sad really since Schumann's is a Munich tradition. I might get a looksee if I walk the walk & talk the talk or flash my paycheck. Not worth it in IMHO. There are plenty of other classy joints in Munich.

One of my favourite places in Munich to drink wine. The staff have always been excellent ever since my first visit. They also cant all be snobs as one of them is from Leeds!

defenitly a nice place to go, if the common munich snobs wouldnt be there. in munich there are quiete enough people wealthy enough to go there and not beeing snobby. well, it's munich, nice to life but with certain human disadvantages. i dunno if you now can pay with visa but the times when i went there you could drive an arrogant waiter nuts if you wanted to pay only with visa. well, the generous tip was gone than ;)

definitely clichée to say that it's snobby, etc. The waiters were always respectable and gave excellent service and perhaps one of the best coffee's in Munich. above comments: Hey, this is the COFFEE BAR, not his American Bar. As for the American Bar (i.e, alcohol) not at all difficult to go in unless you have trouble pushing a door. you just have to do it instead of perpetuating the bull.
