Schall und Rauch - Munich

A friendly, non-pretentious bar in the university quarter, offering value for money, drinks and food (Indian/Thai). Its popularity is legend: where other bars (Like the adjacent BRIC) remain empty, in summer, the students and young professionals that frequent Schall und Rauch often spill over on to the street. It can get very full on evenings, and can be pretty smokey in winter and weekend evenings. Best enjoyed in in summer, sitting on the steps in the sun, drinking a coffee and watching the attractive young things of Maxvorstadt walking by....

I guess that since 1.Jan.2008 this place has had to rename itself simply "Schall", oder? :-) Or have they decided not to comply with the smoking ban?

why would they need to change the name? Sure, the Rauch is to a certain extent also a play on words, but Schall und Rauch as a set phrase means essentially "empty words" (smalltalk?)...and that certainly still applies

I like Schall und Rauch simply as a place to have a quiet one and a chat, especially in warmer weather when you can sit outside. It's an honest and relaxed type of place. What I don't entirely understand is why the dark-haired career waitress who has been working there for at least the eight years still pretends she doesn't recognise me, much less release a smile! Strange how it's often the less attractive ones who are the snootiest...
