Sangeet - Briennerstrasse 10, 80333 Munich, Germany
Sangeet is in a great location: just off Odeonsplatz. Very swish interior, as you would expect for this area of town. Quite large too, seating for around 200 I guess. Very friendly staff. Although that might have been only because this reviewer made a visit in their first week of opening and they were trying to impress. As for the food, well, you'll just have to judge for yourself. Prices are reasonable though: €11 for a chicken curry, €12 for lamb. If you enjoy eating out and in particular if you enjoy Indian cuisine, then it's definitely worth a try. And Thursday til Saturday they're open until 6am.

If, unlike the typical German, you like your Indian curries spicey (the way they should be!) then make sure you specify when ordering, "English hot". If you place you're order in English they'll probably ask, "normal hot or English hot?" I had a Jalfrezi here the other week and there was ZERO spice. The sauce tasted just like milk. I didn't complain, but when they asked if it was ok I said, "a bit more spice would be good". They immediately took it back and added more spice. Which was nice.
Posted by: "Jalfrezi Lover" at 5:01 pm on 11.Jun.2004Went hear yesterday with my girlfriend and her family, and I think we all enjoyed it. As a venue it's certainly the most impressive Indian restaurant I've been to in Munich. The food is good, and unlike Mr. Jalfrezi above we all found the food to be plenty hot enough - so much so 3 of 4 dishes were sent back to be cooled down. Perhaps they heard us speaking English and just gave us English hot automatically... Nevertheless, a great restaurant serving good Indian food - I'll definitely be heading back.
Posted by: Jimbo at 9:35 am on 21.Jun.2004I also recommend "Satluj" on the Worthstrasse (number 9) in Haidhausen. Gets good marks for food, service and atmosphere. Tel: 089 48002230
Posted by: "H L Sloan" at 11:36 am on 21.Jun.2004Yes, You are right, SANGEET is on the way to be the "best Indian Restaurant in Munich" after experiencing all kind of "so-so - locations" ... and the friendliness and charme of Mr. Dino Islam (and his staff ) will be the same wherever he is, not only at times when he starts something new... I know him since few years now and enjoy his food and service at any time and place till now... here the guest can feel really like king – just tell what you like (and how spicy)....
Posted by: "R J Neumann" at 1:41 pm on 28.Jun.2004Sorry, but Sangeet is no where near the quality of Swagat. I live thrity seconds from Sangeet and have eaten there on many occasions because of my addiction to Indian food and its proximity. The food is better than the average for Munich, but Swagat far exceeds what Sangeet can ever dream of. The curries at Sangeet need to be spicier and the sauce needs to be thicker.
Posted by: "Rick" at 7:38 pm on 27.Jul.2004food reasonable enough (not as good as namaskar!) place excellently done up/looks beautifully refurbished, excellent location but with danger of attracting wrong sort of crowd (schicki micki), wont be back in a hurry unless bladdered @ 3am in the vicinity at the w/e. it was busy but service very ordinary.
Posted by: "flogger" at 12:43 pm on 28.Jul.2004Went to Sangeet to try a new Indian restaurant last week. Didn't realize it's the same owner, menu, etc. as the one we live next door to frequent often (Sangham). Even had one of the normal Sangam employees working there who greeted us. Still enjoyed it, great place! Found the Sangeet service a bit better than Sangam, but both have good service especially in comparison to other munich restuarants. If you're looking to try a new dish besides the spicy Vindaloo, give Bhunna Ghosht (Fried lamb with tomatoes and fried onions in a tasty sauce ) a shot. It's not a spicy dish though, but they will spice it up upon request. The Karahi Ghosht is pretty good too. For vegetarians, the Mixed Vegetable dish (either #70 or #71, can't remember) is quite good.
Posted by: "thejarvii" at 11:52 am on 29.Jul.2004It's a toss up between 'Deeba' and this place! Excellent tikka masala-believe it or not I was even disappointed when I got back to the UK and had a 'real'one, no comparison to Sangeet's!! Very good, a must for those curry lovers out there!
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 11:32 pm on 25.Aug.2004Ate here at the weekend and I must say it was very good indeed. On request they made my Chicken Jalfrezi 'English Hot' which they claimed was far hotter than they could eat - in fact it was very tasty and about the right spicyness for a good curry back home. Service was friendly if rather slow when it came to paying at the end. Good value given the location and decor. Had naan stuffed with cheese too, which is a new one for me.
Posted by: "Brummie" at 10:35 am on 2.Sep.2004Awsome chicken Jalfrezi ..... But you must specify English hot and insist that you are able to handle it! (Following morning was a bit painful though). Service was excellent, ambience was relaxing, modern and clean. I cant wait for the next visit:-)
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 3:45 pm on 2.Sep.2004Despite making dinner reservations, we were not directed to any table. We were then asked to move to another table while eating. The over- apologising waiter didn't help matters. The propreiter ignored us. We waited for ages to order drinks and waited longer to be served those drinks. Service was bad and the restaurant seems to have been run chaotically. After reading reviews on this site, i must say i was terribly disappointed.
Posted by: "The Disgruntled" at 11:05 am on 1.Nov.2004We went here recently and were v impressed. The dishes were all wonderfully prepared and the decor was great! I had the vegetarian mix of four or five dishes (which is number thirty something) and it helped me avoid the usual panic of decision making! Service was fine but nothing spectacular. Looking forwadr to going back after trying some not so impressive Indians since.
Posted by: "mellelisa" at 7:53 pm on 4.Nov.2004I ate here for a second time recently. Asked for the Jalfrezi to be English hot this time. And it was. All in all though, the curry wasn't that great. Nothing particularly wrong with it. But nothing brilliant either. I like the decor at Sangeet. And being at Odeonsplatz it is very conveniently located. But I reckon, in terms of food at least, New Dehli at Max-Weber-Platz is now my fave Indisches in Munich. Ask for the Balti! (It's not on the menu)
Posted by: "Jalfrezi Lover" at 9:30 pm on 4.Nov.2004I love this place, great food and great service. Everytime I have been there, and not once have they messed up the order with a large party.
Posted by: "Inflatablewoman" at 10:26 am on 29.Nov.2004Best Indian restaurant in munich for sure.....
Posted by: "Dave" at 2:17 pm on 14.Feb.2005Try the Mutton Vindaloo or Murgh/Chicken Nilgiri and ask them to make it HOT. I can handle extremely hot food and I love spicy Indian food but I sweated over the Vindaloo. This is our favorite Indian restaurant in Munich. Wonderful service and great food.
Posted by: "snow05" at 9:17 am on 30.Aug.2005I think Swagat is by far the best indian food restaurant in Münich. The taste of the food is much, much better than Sangeet.
Posted by: "Laura" at 3:19 am on 27.Aug.2006My favorite Indian restaurant in Munich. Thank you!
Posted by: "Vietmeier Design" at 3:01 pm on 16.Feb.2007Went today for the lunch Buffet, because it is a holiday it cost 9 Euro, was very good, nice salad, and 2 meat dishes- one fish and one chicken and 2 veggie dishes (all with different spices and sauces) with papadoms and nan and all the sauces too. The best was the mango cream dessert...... staff was very attentive too. Oh, and Chai was part of the buffet.
Posted by: Carm at 4:56 pm on 19.Feb.2007Went tonight with friends and we all enjoyed it. Food was good and service was attentive and quick. When a friend of mine felt the shrimp marsala was too spicey for her, they happily took it out back and made it more mild (Thanks "Jalfrezi Lover" for the tip in the review above, otherwise I wouldn't have thought to ask).
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 11:54 pm on 23.Feb.2007Big disappointment... i was there yesterday, after a long day of work and just thought of finding comfort in indian food.. the food was just tasteless and aroma less. i ordered a veg platter which very carelessly lacked a simple thing like tomato,,,,,, a very disturbed ratio of spices :( never goin there again..
Posted by: zenith_star at 10:22 pm on 11.Sep.2007went here 2 weeks ago. for a group of 4 of us each with a starter, a main meal, lots of naan breads and loads of beers the bill was only 110€. I had a vegetable Thali which I asked to be very spicey which it was. my fellow British dining-companions were equally impressed with the 'hotness' of their meals too. portions were very generous, I could hardly finish mine. service was attentive, and prompt even though it was a Friday night and the place was quite busy. we'll definitely be going back!
Posted by: Moonboot at 9:01 am on 12.Sep.2007Scogs and I were here last Saturday, we had been looking forward to a better-than-average Indian meal and were seriously disappointed. The Maltani Soup, described as “hot, was nicely seasoned but absolutely drowned in garlic. Now, we like garlic as much as many of our peers, but this was totally inedible. Scogs sent it back, asking for a helping with less garlic. The second helping had been spiced up but still contained the same overpowering amount of garlic. The chicken for the Tikka may have been marinated for about five minutes, the meat was pale inside and had visible burnt stripes from the grill on the outside, not to mention that it tasted like cardboard. The vegetables were shiny with grease and droopy. My Chicken Makhni was lurid orange but contained a very good blend of tomato, butter and spices, the warmth sort of sneaked up on me, the dish would have been perfect except for the quality of the meat. The pieces were very flat, chewy and compact, reminding me of the wonderful German word “Gummiadler. I have met similar quality (or lack of same) in Chicken McNuggets or other industrial products. There were some positive aspects: The Papadums (free) were spiced, crisp and light, the dips (mint, chutney and the hot, yellow stuff) very well defined and tasty. The Nan was fresh and hot, crisp on the outside and soft on the inside with very good sopping action. The Samosas were spicy and light, cooked to a turn and served with fresh cucumber, tomato and yoghurt, the vegetable filling was firm and well-packed. The wine, a Chilean Caliterra Chardonnay 2006, was a revelation. Fruity sweetness without a hint of sugar, a full, rich body, it fulfilled the old cliché of liquid sunshine and went well with the edible parts of the meal. The soup was not charged, we were offered a free dessert but declined, not knowing what horrors might (or might not, to be fair) be in store for us. The service was decent but a bit slow, considering how empty the place was, the waiters were very polite in spite of the many complaints we had and promised to customize our orders next time around. But can I really trust a restaurant that translates “Kalbfleisch as “Fawn and misspells Evian on the bill? I believe others who have said that they have had only positive experience in this restaurant, but we surely did not.
Posted by: sarabyrd at 12:14 pm on 11.Feb.2008I was about to post a review, but Sara has said it all, I think this was about the worse Curry I have had in decades
Posted by: Scogs at 3:49 pm on 11.Feb.2008Very disappointed with this place, but then again, my previous two Indian meals had been at 'Goa' (Isator) - I don't think any Indian restaurant would compare to there! The decor was really nice, but the staff weren't very friendly. The food wasn't up too much, the chicken pakora tasted like chicken strips from a fast food joint, and the peshwari nan we ordered came out with our starters. Not only that, it had mariscino cherries in it! My boyfriend's lamb biryani appeared to have some sort of sausage in it????, and was very dry. I ordered Lamb Nilgeri (sp?) which was *okay*, but I'd just completed a 6-hour hike, was STARVING, and basically anything would have satisfied me! Definitely won't be going back.
Posted by: Neemi at 12:50 pm on 12.Mar.2008I was there twice, ordered twice "very spicy" and recieved both times a non-spicy meal. I can only guess that the kitchen is more like a fast food restaurant and the cook does not accept any special requests to get things running quick.
Posted by: siskebap at 11:44 am on 10.Jun.2008Had the Ente Jalfrezi last night, and the food was just right - not bland at all. However, although the service was friendly, it was painfully slow.
Posted by: dangermouse at 4:15 pm on 9.Oct.2008Food was good and definitely 'English' spicy. I like my curry spicy having living next to Brick Lane for 10 years and without making any special request my dish was hot but it didn't overpower the other flavours. Would definitely recommend for a small group. But we had a group of about 20 an as Dangermouse says the service was very slow. Nearly an hour between ordering and getting food. One other thing I had probably the best Garlic Nann I've had in Munich and the worse poppadoms!
Posted by: chrislewis7 at 2:01 pm on 10.Oct.2008Sangeet is a burned out shell. They have a sign announcing it will reopen sometime. but sadly no curry there for the foreseeable future.
Posted by: MadAxeMurderer at 1:20 pm on 16.Mar.2009yes, we called to reserve a table there last week and were informed the same. they routed us through to their 'sister' restaurant Sonar Bangala. we found the food there ok, not a patch on Sangeet's though :(
Posted by: Moonboot at 1:51 pm on 16.Mar.2009I haven´t been there myself, but read in the Newspaper last week that Sangeet is now reopened.
Posted by: siskebap at 2:22 pm on 3.Aug.2009Saw people being served outside there this weekend - service looked excellent as usual. Want to go back soon!
Posted by: britmonk at 12:18 pm on 10.Aug.2009We went yesterday and enjoyed the new look of the place and the food. I ordered Chicken Nilgiri and when the waiter asked if I wanted it spicy, I said yes and it was pretty hot. If you don't want your food really, really hot, tell them when you order a Nilgire of Jalfrezze or dishes that aren't typically the hottest. They did a good job of accommodating our bonus guests who showed up and took pretty good care of us. I look forward to returning to Sangeet.
Posted by: fraufruit at 10:25 am on 19.Nov.2009If you like super-hot vindaloo, that is the place to go. Although vindaloo is supposed to be spicy (maybe even THE most spicy in Indian restaurants here), I find that Sangeet has made it insanely hot when it should only be pretty hot, but not SO hot that you can't taste anything!! I can take spicy hot meals but after adding a whole tub of yoghurt to the dish, it was still burning!! I think the cook fell asleep! (BTW, the restaurant charged me the yoghurt used to "neutralise" the spicy vindaloo, which other restaurants don't!"
