Safran - Steinstr. 9, 81675 Munich, Germany
I found this excellent Indian restaurant in the Rosenheimer Platz area while stumbling around from Hofbraukeller to Molly mallones. It is called Safran. I went there last night and the food was amazing. The service was excellent, the menu was very extensive and the prices were very fair for city center. It's located right around the corner from the Hofbraukeller and I think it is the corner of Milchstrasse and Worthstrasse. Anyway, it is well worth checking out.

I checked it out last night. I got a standard Munich curry which is pre-cooked dry meat in a curry sauce. Mine was near-inedible rubbish. In fact, I didn't eat it but still had to pay for it even though I complained. My revenge is posting my comments here. I will not be going back there again.
Posted by: "Roland" at 8:37 am on 25.Nov.2004Could not disagree more with Roland. I have eaten here 3 times over the last few weeks. The food has been good on all three occasions, the waiter remembered me and remembered that I like my Vindaloo properly spicy and gets the chef to make it HOT, and the menu has a few items that I have only seen in small asian cafes in the UK which are aimed at people who are ethically south asian. I am definitely in the "This is a great place to eat" camp.
Posted by: "davidallen" at 9:42 am on 25.Nov.2004This difference of opinion is par for the course when it comes to indian restaurants. They have good and bad days. The meal you chose has a big influence. The reviewer has good and bad days. The ambiance, other customers and time of day all make a difference. Then again. Some people have no idea about indian food!
Posted by: "rp" at 5:18 pm on 26.Nov.2004The place is located on the corner of Schiltbergerstrasse & Steinstrasse. Good place & good service and good food as well. They'll do it extra hot if you ask.
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 11:37 am on 22.Apr.2005I ate there about a month ago, and was impressed. I was not expecting a very good curry but the service, presentation and quality was spot on. I even converted my non-curry liking girlfriend to liking it AND wanting to go back again. Pappadams weren't free though. Chicken was great quality, certainly freshly cooked, beef was very good too.
Posted by: "Paul" at 11:42 am on 22.Apr.2005I ate there last night and must admit no real complaints, had the chicken jalfrezi which i asked for hot and had the proof this morning! Nice friendly service. Ok popps werent free but oh well...
Posted by: "Prince_Albert" at 4:09 pm on 2.Jun.2005I was there last night, had my usual Jalfrezi, and it was hot enough. My mouth burned, but a good burn. Hottest I have had in Munich. There were 6 of us, and everyone was happy with thier food. Found them very attentive also, with drinks and more rice.
Posted by: Carm at 2:08 pm on 5.Jun.2005We eat at this restaurant regularly and the food is always excellent and the service most friendly. My favourite dishes there are the Jalfrezi and Karahi Murgh. Like many Indian restaurants in Munich the quality is now far superior than it was a few years ago.
Posted by: Owain Glyndwr at 11:27 am on 11.Apr.2006I go here quiet often, and the service always good, and the food, wow, everytime a treat. Went today, and tried something totally different, and was again, very happy with my meal.
Posted by: Carm at 11:31 pm on 14.Apr.2007We were very happy to find Safran in the Steinstrasse and go there regularly. They don't use the bland generic sauces that some of the others do (Satluj for instance just puts vegetables or chicken or what have you in a dish and then pours over the same orange coloured sauce! If you want it "hot" there, they bring you a pepper shaker...). The food at Safran is real and the people most considerate. We are having a takeaway from there this evening...
Posted by: "GeeDee" at 6:46 pm on 17.May.2007Had an excellent evening here tonight. Great food - and while it could have been hotter, we had the scale (of hotness and of cautiousness) explained to us by our waiter, Sahil. Seems we got about 30%; they will work us up slowly (or fast if we want) to Lurker Mark strength. Nice atmosphere, great and very friendly service, and a really tasty mango schnap at the end. CN should pay them a visit again soon
Posted by: "victoria" at 10:41 pm on 26.Sep.2007Have any of you engineers out there thought of inventing a device looking like a thermometer, with digital readout, giving the "spiceyness" of any food it is dipped into? Units would be "petersens", to be defined later.
Posted by: petersen at 8:20 am on 5.Dec.2007We (four of us and a two-year-old) were there for lunch yesterday. The service was attentive and even convinced Scogs not to have the Mango Duck, saying that it was very sweet and only on the menu for Germans. The Sabzi Shorba was very creamy but not very spicy, the Arachi Ghosht (lamb kebab with marinated vegetables) made up for that, being well-seasoned and cooked to perfection with the least hint of pink in the middle. Our resident spice-head asked for "English hot" and got it, being a regular. The Nigili Duck was a disappointment, very bland and lifeless. Our vegetarians were happy with their meals, extra rice was brought without a murmur. The veggies got fancy rice with paneer and peas while we carnivores has plain rice. The staff kept an eye on the two-year-old when he went wandering while his mother ate her meal, and when she couldn't finish it they very kindly doggy-bagged it for her. I don't know what the service would be like if the restaurant were busy, but the laid-back atmosphere of a Sunday afternoon made us feel like valued guests. I nominate this for one of the next curry nights.
Posted by: sarabyrd at 9:39 am on 4.Feb.2008a big rowdy crowd of us piled down here on Saturday night after the rugby. we only had to wait a while outside and they managed to sort out a giant table for the ten of us. service was friendly and fast. a few of us had ordered vindaloos which were as hot as molten lava. very impressed and we'll be heading back some time soon.
Posted by: Moonboot at 3:04 pm on 17.Mar.2008Went there today for lunch. I was the only one in the restaurant, but the waiters weren't friendly. Had my usual veggie fare: Saag Paneer, which was surprisingly spicy. Liked it. But I'd prefer my meal come with a bit of naan instead of rice.
Posted by: Rhapsody at 10:13 pm on 3.May.2008My husband and I were there for dinner Friday night and really enjoyed it. The service was great and the food was unusual(specials menu) and excellent. The price was typical for an Indian restaurant in Munich. We will definitely go back.
Posted by: Nancy at 4:33 pm on 31.May.2008Been there now three times. The first time we were a group of ten.Took ages to get served. The people who came in after us got served quicker.Food average.Second time were asked if we wanted a mango schnapp or another schnapps at the end the meal, then got charged for it.Wouldnt have minded if i had orded it but this all took place while i was at the ladies!.Third time went only for a drink refuse to eat there again the service has always been so bad.(Not changed).Had to call a waiter over just to get a drink after about ten minutes.Saw then how the manager tried to get someone to pay for 4 portions of poppadoms although it was agreed that they were free.Maybe try again in 2010 but not this year.Think munich has too many other indian restaurants to choose from
Posted by: Maid marion at 11:52 am on 27.Feb.2009really strange how experiences can be drastically different. we were in Safran many times and never had a problem with too slow service or attempts to charge poppadoms or mango shots (which in our cases have always been offered, and for free...)
Posted by: "The Inspector" at 10:02 pm on 27.Feb.2009We had a cozy little Curry Night with 12 attendees there last night. Up front: I had reserved for Toytown and told the manager that we expected to be treated royally. When we arrived the table had been set with fairly fresh poppadoms and three sauces, on the house, those who wanted it got mango liqueur after the meal, also on the house. The kitchen got out our main dishes all at the same time, without skins indicative of them standing around after dishing up. The drink service was quick enough, average speed. The rice was refilled without having to request it. As I couldn't decide on anything specific I ordered a thali (two meats, one veggie, salad, raita, plain nan); for one you get to try various tastes and ingredients, for another you don't know just what you're getting and have to find out yourself. The beef in creamy coriander/cinnamon/cloves sauce was tender and tasty; I feared the pork might be in a vindaloo sauce but it was actually tomato and onion, also tasty; the biggest surprise was the spinach with paneer, beautifully hot and spicy but not mouth-numbing. The salad was fresh and not acidy, the raita was zingy, the plain nan was hot and well made. Not the worst Indian meal I've had in Munich, and better than some I've had in the motherland of curry, England. Whatever nilgiri was served up didn't deserve the name - Verona Feldbusch Blubb was more like it. The ghosht across from me was very spicy and substantial, i.e. not indeterminate vegetables cooked to a pulp and dosed with chili sauce. One dish was seriously over-salted. I heard good things about the fish curry, and when someone didn't get the right order due to a mistake in communication it was replaced without a murmur. All in all a very pleasant night with no hitches (except the waiter tripping and pouring half a pint of water down my back).
