Based in large part on the glowing reviews on this website, we went to this pub last night. They do not know how to pour a good Guiness, the owner is ornery, and the place is cramped. The best part of the place was the very pleasant server Polly. Not worth the effort to haul yourself out there...

I beg to differ on most of your points. "They do not know how to pour a good Guinness" -- Perhaps you were unlucky with a bad keg or a new staff member. In my experience they serve probably the best pint of Guinness in Munich. My experience is coming from about 10 years drinking the stuff at home in Ireland, 6 years working behind a bar in Dublin and 30+ years in a family that worked for the Guinness brewery. Admittedly I've not been in Ryan's in a few months so unless things have changed dramatically I'd strongly disagree with you on that one. "the owner is ornery" -- I've never seen the word 'ornery' used outside of cheap western movies. The owner, Vernon, is one of the most congenial people I've met in Munich. Anytime we've visited the pub he's done his utmost to be a welcoming and friendly host. He's got a witty dry sense of humour and a generous nature. "and the place is cramped" -- It's a very small, popular bar. That adds to the charm and appeal of the place. I'd suggest you give it another go and see if you still feel the same way about the owner & quality of the Guinness. If you feel that they don't know how to pour a good pint then please go into more details. What was wrong with it? Did you raise your concerns with the staff? In my humble opinion Ryan's Muddy Boot is one of the friendliest pubs in Munich.

The owner is a fine young man, needs a haircut tho. He'll gladly make you a tasty sandwich or plate of beans and toast or whatever, just ask. They've got a proper dartboard here, and the collection of music is top-notch. Cramped, yes. If you're a non-smoker, this is NOT the place either as it tends to get extremely smoky (in fact we here at work call it the "Smoky Boot"). You'll not get a better pint of the black stuff or (my favourite) Kilkenny's anywhere else.

The Muddy Boot is one of the few Irish Pubs in Munich that manages to serve a decent pint of German beer. Vernon has Weissbier on tap, but he understands that most Münchners prefer it from a bottle - they are available. The available beers are a fine choice (not just Spaten). The Guinness is always good – never had a bad pint. The Whiskey selection is quite alright, not just the standards. The snacks are fine. Service is great, no matter who is serving. Vernons prices are generally lower than his competitors. It’s a small place, so go there early, drink plenty and don't worry about the crowds. All those people can't be wrong. Great music every once in while too (e.g. Johnny & Maritta). Darts. Beats most Irish pubs for me.

I have to agree with the good reviews. Vernon is great and always friendly. But who are you calling "little guy"? ;)

To follow up all of the comments in response to my posting - the typical irish pub is quite congenial and makes you feel welcome. that was not my experience there. perhaps my beers sat on the counter for too long that night - but they certainly did not appear to have been poured in a two step fashion (i do not need a frilly shamrock in my head)

This is the best Irish bar in Munich, it's a little lump of the sod right here where we need it. Great for expats and Jerry alike, smashing staff and a decent pint. And an abundance of entertaining regulars. Bit like Cheers really...

Went for a pint tonight. Very cosy, the beer (German) was very nice and there was a good crowd. Definitely a place to enjoy a quiet pint.

I have never been there but I know the bar owner Vernon. I remember the days that he used to wear huge platform boats to make him look taller. Quite funny. I'm sure that the place has its off days but I think that he knows what he is doing from what I saw in the last that he worked in. Some place close to the Hilton as I can remember. Bit of a moody lad but thats the way it is.
