Roosevelt - Munich

Roosevelt is worth the trip if you have a gang of friends with you who can help liven the place up a bit. It's not much more than a bar, but it's a very posh bar. I think these guys are trying to clone Schumann's, but they don't quite make it.

Waiters are dressed like at Schumi's, but what worked for the sheep Dolly does not necessarily work for a bar. It's a cold, impersonal attempt to make a stylish cocktail bar, but sometimes it's too cold and has ridiculous rules. I was here once with a group of friends when the place was fairly empty and witnessed another small group being told they couldn't occupy a table if they didn't order cocktails rather than coffee.

The group, understandably, left. Roosevelt is the kind of place where they don't offer an atmosphere of any description, they just let you fill the space up and see what happens, which means that some nights it is buzzing and others it is flat dead and you can't predict which it will be in advance unless you bring about 30 of your own friends with you. Hope you are in a group!

Friendly service for a so-called "posh" bar, little bar snacks also provided for free. The cocktails were very good and there were lots of interesting ones, not just the average Mai Tai and Caipis.

Not much of a place for beer drinkers. They only serve pils. No helles. For a beer, one would be better off going to Gewürzmühle or Tattenbach. Both are within visual distance of Roosevelts.

A stylish and understated bar, serving perfectly engineered cocktails and they certainly know how to make a perfect mojito. A large selection of malts is also available and the bar apparently boasts one of the biggest selections of Rum in Germany.

I visited Roosevelt in late February 2009. In fact it was the first bar I stepped into after checking into my hotel across the steet. Bear in mind, I'm new to Munich (my only previous visit was in 1979, I was 15, and I don't remember much). Roosevelt appears to me to be primarily a locals bar; it seems too small - and uninspiring -to be anything else. I found the staff to be very friendly, and they spoke reasonably good English (good for me, because I'm just starting to learn German). I ordered a 'beer', and waited for about three minutes while they poured, then let the head dissipate, then top up (kind of) the glass. Having travelled around the world quite extensively, I found this somewhat bemusing, since most other places merely either continue pouring and let the foam dribble down the glass, or knock it off with a knife, or something like that. Anyway, I did really enjoy the beer (my first in Germany in 30 years), and had quite a few more. I started talking to a very nice local who worked for Deutche Telecom. His only fault was the pretentious art he made of smoking his Cohiba. While I was there the place filled up well. I watched a group much younger than me arrive, and they appeared to enjoy themselves - plenty of laughter with pitchers of something pink/purple being consumed at their table. I also got to see what looked like the local hooker. She arrived, sat alone, and kept giving me the wink, although I wasn't interested (all the fun is in the chase). She was certainly a decent looker, and I'm sure she's relatively successful. A young couple came in and sat by themselves, and before I left the guy had managed to get his fingers down the back of her trousers (not all the way, mind you). An middle-aged couple came, managed to get plastered faster than I did, and left (after questioning their bill with the manager) about two hours later, the woman almost couldn't navigate to the door by herself (a nice cheap date!). Meanwhile, I had a chat with Mr. DT, and slowly absorbed the cigar smoke into my hair, and skin. I thik Roosevelt could easily become my local watering hole, but I can't say it's particularly exciting. it's a good clean place, and just amusing enough to want to return without being so excitable that you look for somewhere quieter.

I think I become cheaper and cheaper every day. You won´t get me into a bar where an espresso cost 2,70 Euro. And they only served 1 sugar in a roll with it. Lots of 70 year olds burning their pension money here. But I can´t say for nights, that was at the afternoon.

I used to live in the area for many years. For a time my local used to be the Liebighof, but these days it's turned into an extended lounge for the nearby Altenheim. Still, the Roosevelt was a welcome escape, especially after the non-smoking regs came in. These days bars in general are stagnant and clinical (full of the Starbucks crowd). Sure, Roosevelt isn't cheap - but given where the place is located should not trigger any surprises. The staff are sound, and relaxed as a rule - provided you're a regular and don't come across as an arrogant. You can't expect a "Cheers" welcome on your first couple of visits. So, give the place a bit of slack... order a drink, sit back and take a drag on your fave smoke... life could be worse!
