Pequeno - Munich

Pequeno is one of my favourite Mexican restaurants in Munich. Portions are good and the selection is wider than most places in the city. I love the huge chicken burrito with salad.

Cocktails are super good, and the service is always friendly. Happy Hour til 9 and again at 11 til close.

I stopped into the Lehel 'branch' of Pequeno last night. I'm still finding my feet in Munich and reading menus in German is quite challenging, so Mexican seemed a safe bet. Pequeno is indeed a smallish place, and lives up to its name. There's an 'L' shaped bar with two small table type protrusions which combined seat about 10 people. There's also an open area for regular table dining with seating for about 35-40 people amongst about 10 tables. The decor is pleasant, and Latin jazz fills the air without being overwhelming. The bartender and I had a good chat - he's a very nice guy named Andriann from Romania. He must not get paid very well, since he clearly hasn't purchased a new shirt in some time, the one he was wearing last night looked about three sizes too small for him. The menu was extensive, but, I was dining alone - how boring - so, I'm afraid I can only comment on the "Tacos Pollo". The chef must have enrolled in Mexican cooking course, but obviously dropped out after the first day, after learning how to fry tortillas for tacos. The tortilla itself was absolutely correct, a crispy and slightly oily thin corn pancake folded over just the way it should be, but I have no idea what it was filled with, and could only recognize one or two small morsels of chicken per taco. I was hungry, and it tasted good, and the large amount of green salad served with it filled me up nicely, but someone should explain to the chef that there's more to Mexican cooking than sprinkling everything liberally with paprika and chili powder. Still, it was good value, I had two jugs of hells, and the tacos and with generous tip (Adriann was kind enough to talk to me all evening) only dropped a €20. Now, I don't go anywhere without encountering amusing people, and Pequeno didn't disappoint in that regard. When I arrived I noticed a nicely dressed, but very drunk woman at the corner of the bar. Now, I've been drunk, really stupid drunk, and it takes some time to get that way, so I can only imagine she'd been on it since lunch time. I arrived at 20:30 or so, and she was having trouble keeping her eyes open. During the course of my meal, she polished off a small carafe of wine, then decided she needed a cigarette. I'm not exaggerating at all when I report that it took her about 5 minutes to get off her stool, and walk to the door, a whole 3 meters away. I was amazed that she managed to suck down her tobacco without falling over from the nicotine hit. When she returned she decided to put her jacket on. I won't bore you with the details, but suffice it to say that I ordered a fresh jug of hells, drank it, paid my bill, and left before she managed to unhook her jacket from the wall hanger and get it around her shoulders. Overall, I'd rate Pequeno at 75%.
