The Münchener Eiszauber (Munich Ice Magic) is Munich's largest open air ice rink. It is open from 26th November 2004 till 29th January 2005. In previous years the ice rink always used to be located on Marienhof behind Marienplatz. This year they are continuing to dig the new U-Bahn station so the rink is at Karlplatz Stachus instead. Cooling technology allows the ice rink to stay open so long as air temperatures remain below 10 degrees Celsius.

Skating costs 2,50 in the mornings, rising to 5 in the evenings. Skate hire is 4 plus a 30 deposit or an ID card. |

The atmosphere at this Eiszauber is fantastic. I love it. It's just so Christmassy. They serve mulled wine and play funky music over the sound system. A great way to spend an evening, whether you think you're Torvil and Dean or not.
Another top tip for open-air ice skating in Munich: when it's cold enough (i.e. has been well below zero for a week or two) then the Nymphenburger canal in Neuhausen freezes over. When this happens they open up ice skating hire huts and they set up lanes where you can play, ummm, I forget the name, that game where you slide heavy slider thingies over the ice and you the person who slides their's closest to the target wins. |

I went there once before I went on Christmas vacation and it was a blast! Will try to go again before it closes.
