Odeon - Amalienstrasse 24, 80333 Munich, Germany

Website: Odeon

Update, Odeon is closed. Address is now home to Nam Nam.

We found this place just a week after it had opened. We bumped into it after a dinner at Kàpari while we were searching for a bar at which to finish the night. Odeon was about 50 metres away, and looked pretty cool inside, with great lighting - but it was full. So we decided to come back and check it later. As keen as we are, we returned the next day.

The first thing that strikes you here is the superb lighting. It creates a very glowy ambience. There is a sort of secret lounge around the back to the right of the bar, but that bit is already getting to be known so you'll have to get up early to get a spot back there. While we waited for the first drinks they were playing Sade's Smooth Operator, and smooth sums this place up very nicely. But hang on, it looks familiar. There is something about it that tells me I have seen it before, but where? Suddenly, the inspirational Dutchman Anthony says "It's like News Bar without the magazines". Indeed it is my friend, but a much bigger version, more spacious, more relaxed, perhaps a little bit more chic.

Talking with the bartender we discovered that Odeon is owned by the same people who run News Bar, Roxy, Atlas and Roma, one of whom is the famous German actress Iris Berben, so full marks to the Dutch for spotting that. These guys are good at this; after one week Odeon is already full. They have an interesting selection of wines but the Whisky Sour needs some re-work. I will put that down to the youth of this place. The crowd is very Schwabing; once you have lived here for a while, you will understand what I mean by that. Until then, let's translate:- "25-40, stylish, good-looking, wearing mainly black clothes, with money to burn". The menu is international (from Italian to Thai), and the food, while not great, is acceptable. This one should last.

Odeon has recently become one of my very very very most favourite places in Munich. It opens the whole day, the whole week. Italian food is normally much above the average. Best cocktails in Munich (especially those with fresh mint ... Mojito if you like rum, Julep if you like bourbon ... i strongly recommend Julep) or at least so good as Pacific Times (when the right bartender is there) the decoration is super stylish and the ambience crowdy when it has to be and lonely at the very end. the waitresses are just beautiful and surprisingly communicative! the worst = the horrible ketchup that they serve you with the sandwiches/fries REALLY -> probably one of the best cocktails in town !!! 8 out of 10 - my score cheers / l.g.

I've been here once, and musy say the service leaved a lot to be desired. The waitress seemed VERY uninterested in serving us, and much more interested in flirting with a table in the corner. After asking for the check (twice), I finally went up and asked a third time... The atmosphere was nice, relaxed, and menu okay; but the service didn't leave me wanting to come back.
