Odai - Sushi Bar - Arcisstrasse 39, 80799 Munich, Germany
Japanese Restaurant Odai celebrated their recent renovation with a grand reopening party Monday night, 26th April 2004. Located in Schwabing this small establishment is trying its best to make a (bigger) splash on the scene. The owners have pulled out all the stops to make this renovation as attractive as possible to the younger crowds of Munich while maintaining their tradition of great food at great prices for their customers. This Monday they had 300 liters of beer to give away and buffet for free till it ran out. ... (and more pics here)

The renovation features a Manga/Anime theme with everything new from the lights to the cushions on the seats. You never knew you liked Tom Kha Gai or Umi No Sashi Maki so much before you found out it was going to be free!!!
Write ups in Munich Online can only take a restaurant so far. Word of mouth is needed to give them all that they need to succeed in a world of German Red Tape. Here it is again in English.
Odai has approximately 15 tables and seats about 50 people. Japanese pop culture dominates the decor with anime and manga paintings, cartoons, murals and projections. Take away menu is well priced. (10% discount for take-out orders)
Plans for the future of the Odai are to expand their basement into smaller rooms with 'personal' athmosphere. This would include personal attention that includes food, massages, relaxing music and all things 'Geisha'. Sure, it's only a dream at this stage but the owner Somchai hopes it won't be to far away.

This is actually my favorite Japanese restaurant in Munich. You get a lot of traditional Japanese dishes, like the Unagi/Hotate (Eel/Scallop) hot sushi. The food is always fresh, atmosphere is really nice, but it is a bit of a long haul to walk from the U-Bahn station. But pricy, too, but the great food makes up for all of that.
Posted by: "Mini" at 11:43 pm on 4.Jul.2004The meal was fine, but I thought it was overpriced for what I received, esp for the atmosphere, service, and selection. I wouldn't go there for sushi again. I didn't like that I couldn't order sashimi a la carte -- only platters of predefined, standard sashimi. When I tried to explain what I wanted, it was clear that the waitress barely had even a basic grasp of german, nor did she seem the least bit interested in trying to take our order correctly. The atmosphere was pretty dead ... and I know anime is in and the drawings are nice, but I thought it looked unprofessional and a bit childish. Not the kind of place I'm looking for in a sushi restaurant. Sushi - mediocre; prices - high; atmosphere - eh; hard to reach by u-bahn, hard to park nearby.
Posted by: "Mia" at 10:43 am on 10.Jul.2006Odai has now closed down. I don't know when this happened, but it must have been sometime late 2006. No information yet on what has taken its place. The Odai website is recommending that customers try Tokami at Theresienstraße 54 instead.
