Update - This restaurant closed sometime late 2006 or early 2007. It is not known what has taken its place in the premises.
Original review:
One gets the impression with many Indian restaurants in Munich that all the dishes on the menu are based on the same sauce, the same ingredients. They cook chicken in the sauce and call it a Chicken Jalfrezi. They cook potato in the same sauce and call it a Vindaloo.
Not so at New Delhi. This reviewer's group ordered four different dishes and it was clear by look and by taste that each dish was distinct. In terms of food, I can't recommend the restaurant enough. The curries are excellent. And talking to the owner, Mr Nar, it's clear that he takes huge pride in the quality of his chefs and the cuisine they prepare.
New Delhi also claims to be the only restaurant in Munich which serves Ayurverdic cuisine. This is Indian health food. Ask the staff for details. They are also one of the very few Indian restaurants in Munich, possibly the only one, which serves the Balti dish. Again, this is not on the menu. Ask the staff!

Had a Chicken Tikka Balti at New Delhi last night. It didn't come in the same kind of "balti dish" that you get in the UK, but it tasted just as good, if not better. It's not on the menu, so you have to ask for it. In fact, if you're going to go and try it you might want to give them a call in advance so they have time to prepare it.
Posted by: Malcolm Spudbury at 8:33 am on 27.Oct.2004After bad experience at Kashmir we tried this - for a party of 9 people. Simply superb, service excellent, good prices and the specially prepared balti dishes (I had the Chicken Tikka) out of this world, well, Munich anyway. Surpasses RAMA on Arnulfstrasse. DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED
Posted by: "peter" at 9:11 am on 23.Nov.2004Went there last night with a group and it was excellent. On hearing English speakers we were told that Balti dishes were available that night. Balti everything, no less, such as Balti Chicken Vindaloo. I guess this is a way to allow English speakers to order off the menu and get the hotness they desire. The balti dishes are small and tall and made of bronze but contain a good portion. My balti chicken vindaloo was excellent and fully as hot as an English dish. The meat was tender and the potatoes were red all the way through, just as it should be. Next time I'll opt for the Madras as these quick-to-cook dishes don't leave enough time for the spices to integrate so it is best to go for a less hot dish for the sake of your digestion. Free papadums and more arrive when you finish them. As much excellent white rice as you need with your meal. Augustiner Helles available (no Edelstoff). Excellent and attentive service and excellent food. I will go there again. Based on this one experience, this equals or betters the Rama on Arnulfstr. (but nothing is going to beat the Rama in Ismaning).
Posted by: "Roland" at 9:16 am on 23.Nov.2004Yum Yum Yum! I cant recommend this place enough. The curries are fresh and tasty and uniquely each dish has a different sauce! (not like some other curry houses in Munich). We had the Chicken Tikka Balti (nice n spicy and gorgeous), a Chicken Jalfrezi and a Chicken Khumbi which we asked to be hot. The Chicken Khumbi is made with garlic and ginger and is fabulous. Their garlic naan bread is also worth trying -lovely and fresh.
Posted by: "Foxy" at 2:58 pm on 8.Dec.2004I was at New Delhi last night and, as previously, the Balti was excellent. Mr Nar also told me that he'll be open throughout Christmas. I.e. 24, 25, and 26th December with a "special Christmas menu" - although he didn't elaborate on what what special about it.
Posted by: "Edwina Curry" at 12:35 pm on 14.Dec.2004Why can't the English get it Vindaloo does not exist in India... Indian Restaurants have evolved over time in England and recognise that the public want authentic food not F**** Vindaloo!!!!
Posted by: "annon" at 3:50 pm on 14.Jan.2005Huh? Me no comprendez. What's your point, annon? Are you saying the English like Vindaloo or not? And either way, what does that have to do with this restaurant?
Posted by: "Confused of Lehel" at 4:02 pm on 14.Jan.2005I went there last night and tried the normal fare (balti dishes are available every night on demand, however) just to see what it was like. I had a dhal soup starter which was very good and the chicken vindaloo which was again very good. The standard dishes are much less oily than the balti dishes as the sauce is yoghurt based. They are less spicy than the English are used to but it was spicy and tasty enough. The meat was obviously cooked fresh with the spices and sauce. I was very pleased with it. Free papadoms to start with were much appreciated as were the free drinks at the end. This is my second visit and on the basis of those two visits the place has the beating of the Rama in Anulfstr. and the two of them leave the rest of the central Munich Indian restaurants in the dust.
Posted by: "Roland" at 9:30 am on 4.Feb.2005Superb!! I'd put it on equal footing with Rama, the quality of service is better...
Posted by: "Peter" at 2:48 pm on 4.Feb.2005Definitely the best Indian restaurant in town.
Posted by: "xargon" at 3:11 pm on 4.Feb.2005I eat Balti here every day. I know it's wrong. But I can't help myself. It just tastes so good.
Posted by: "Local People" at 12:14 pm on 8.Feb.2005me too.
Posted by: "balti boy" at 4:37 pm on 8.Feb.2005two very big thumbs up for this place. my two friends bitched about the balti not being served in a proper bowl, but nonetheless, they both enjoyed what was on offer very much as did i and the rest of our gang. i thought the food had a zing not often found in indian food in munich. everything tasted very fresh. service was very good too. place was mobbed with english speakers, mobbed.
Posted by: "jane" at 11:17 am on 11.Feb.2005What can I say? The Neu Delhi will provide you with the most authentic 'English' style curry in Munich. Great friendly service (I've even been given lifts home after a late meal there!) which is really unsurpassed. Once you become a regular they know exactly how spicy you want your dishes and you'll be greeted as a friend rather than a customer. Highly recommended. I've just moved back to the UK and I miss the place! Apparently they are opening a new restaurant as well over the other side of the Isar. I'll be sure to visit both on my next return visit to Munich.
Posted by: "Paul" at 3:29 pm on 27.Feb.2005We ate there last week and I didn't think it was very good, and won't go back. I had the Tandoori Chicken Tikka and I have had much better at Sitar and Sangjeet. The chicken seemed hardly marinated in Tandoori and the naan wasn't even very cooked.
Posted by: "julie" at 10:13 am on 15.Apr.2005Had a vindaloo at New Delhi's second restaurant (BTW, it's called "Tandoori", not "New Delhi") on saturday night and it was the best vindaloo I've had in Munich. Definitely worth a try.
Posted by: "Vin Dalu" at 3:50 pm on 25.Apr.2005I used to really like this restaurant - great food and service, friendly, and I was quite partial to the L.E.D.-illuminated picture of Shiva on the wall. As of lately, however, it seems like they are having some quality control issues. In February my girlfriend was there with 5 of her friends, and out of the 6 of them, 4 got violently ill afterwards. Of the other two, one ordered just the soup. Most of those who were sick ordered chicken and rice dishes. We wrote it off as a one time thing - McDonalds has these issues sometimes too and they have a team of 1000 lawyers writing their kitchen cleanliness policies. Today, however, we went again and ordered the Chicken Tikka and the Butter Chicken, and about an hour later we were both down with violent food poisioning. This restaurant has great staff and great tasting food, but 6 people out of 8 in two visits getting food poisoning is odds I don't like.
Posted by: "Chris Hook" at 5:16 pm on 16.May.2005went there last night . 3rd visit . first and second visit was 1st class chicken tikka . last night chicken tikka was very disappointing . i even asked if they changed the cook.has anyone else had the same experience ?is the other resturant recommended
Posted by: "andrew towers" at 6:35 pm on 17.May.2005I think they have changed the cook as well. Maybe the cook has gone to their sister restaurant the Tandoori to give it a good start. I had a balti chicken vindaloo there the other night and I thought it disappointing.
Posted by: "Roland" at 9:49 am on 18.May.2005Their curry sauce has had a much different texture recently. They must have a new chef.
Posted by: "Carrie Winford" at 9:23 pm on 19.May.2005Hi All, I visited this restaurant few days back. Food was ok but not as good as before...but as in previous reviews, i and my wife also suffered severe throat infection problems. I think quality control is surely a problem here. Not recommended any more.
Posted by: "saure" at 12:13 pm on 22.May.2005Tried the other restaurant, spoke with the owner who was concerned about the comments on the Neu Delhi........
Posted by: "Peter" at 9:10 am on 23.May.2005I had a lengthy discussion with Ram (the restaurant owner) about the food poisoning scare at New Delhi recently. He told me that earlier this year they changed their meat supplier because New Delhi and a few other Indian restaurants (including Ganga) were offered a better price. Obviously the meat was of lower quality and consequently the food poisoning incidents. Ram said that three other restaurants had the same problem including Ganga. He said they stopped buying meat from that meat vendor immediately after the incidents and now have a German meat supplier (Ritter, I think, not sure of the spelling) and he said they provide the best meat. I don't know how true the information is but I like to believe that Ram is probably telling the truth because none of the TT'ers or any of my friends who have been there many times has had a problem so far.
Posted by: "Edwina Curry" at 7:19 am on 10.Jun.2005tried the home service today. that was really disappointing and i cant even think about any other home service with such low qualities in any matter. First they forgot my main dish - i called them then and the guy on the phone was very unfriendly. It was about 20 minutes before they close (at least thats what they say on their prospect) and the kitchen was already closed. The food was bad to be honest. (well i had chicken pakora - not even average - and my girlfriend a mixed salad which turned out to be a tengelmann - a grocery franchise in german -(!!!!) made salad her dessert didnt taste her too)
Posted by: "Jonas" at 11:16 pm on 8.Nov.2005the last home delivery I got from this place was absolutely rubbish.
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 10:51 am on 9.Nov.2005I do not understand the take-away guest. Asian food may it be Chinese or Indian is just not for designed as takeaways. Pakoras taste best when they fied and eaten on the spot - and Indians are not known for salads. The best designed take away is Macs.
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 6:26 pm on 2.Feb.2006I went there the other day the food does taste good but the service is full of crap, i know they are going to delete this comment, obviously. i saw better service in school canteen than the place i went to, the clithes the waiters were wearing put me off from my curry also they smell so bad that i couldnt smell the curry that i paid for.
Posted by: "Amar Babazy" at 8:07 pm on 21.Mar.2006I ate there last night - the service was terrible and the potatoes in the curry were cold and rock hard. Think it's time to take the 'thumbs up' recommendation off this place....
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 5:51 pm on 4.Apr.2006They must have a new chef - food was fantastic. At last real onion bhajis and english style curry! Had a Jalfrezi - great hot dish - little sauce but lots of flavour. Full thumbs up.
Posted by: "David Smith" at 2:43 pm on 12.Jun.2006Went there last night, and the food was baaad to say the least! Okay i'm an indian from England so I know not to expect home cooked standards..but come on i've never had sweet chicken before! However the service was good..just wouldn't go there if you are craving real indian food
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 11:05 am on 8.Oct.2006Went there after a long time. The food was just to our taste. Actually we were trying out other restaurants but nothing beats this place. One thing is missing though the delicious waiter "Ravi" was not there to serve us with his spicy smile and hot looks.
Posted by: "Nisha and katty" at 11:06 pm on 18.Oct.2006update : restaurant closed... we.. a starved Indian couple were supposed to meet our friends for dinner there.... at the restaurant.. we then realized that it has been closed and the place is up to b rented out!!!!
Posted by: "mini" at 2:44 pm on 4.Jan.2007I talked to Ram last night at the Tandoori and he told me the Neu Delhi is shut down and his brother Ravi has gone back to England, bad news for Nisha and Kitty :-(. As we all know the Tandoori is as good as Neu Dehli was in it`s better days.
Posted by: "Goldie" at 6:23 pm on 4.Jan.2007This seems to be wrong. I ordered take away from them just today. If they were closed, they are no longer.
