Christmas decorations started going up in Munich a couple of weeks ago already. In fact, my local 'Supermarket' (we'll call it that for now) was selling tinsel and advent calendars back at the end of September! But now the countdown to Chrimbo is official because today the Christmas tree will be erected on Marienplatz. In fact, if you look at the webcam you can see they're already working on it. Apparently this tree comes from Freyung-Grafenau, the woods in far Eastern Bavaria. The 27m high, 150 year old Spruce was transported here at the weekend. Over the next couple of days it will be decorated with around 2,500 candles. And if you think Christmas gets earlier every year, it's true! Last year the tree was erected on November 17th, two days later than this year. Merry Christmas everybody! ...

OK, if truth be told, the tree is not put up on Marienplatz earlier every year. In actual fact it always goes up on the middle Monday in November. This means the date will get earlier by one day every year until 2008 when it will revert back to November 17th again.

Incidently, the Christmas Markets begin this year on Friday 26th November.

Yay Gluewein. Is it me or is Munich really busy over the last couple of weeks! I live on the U1 so maybe it's the OEZ. But I keep seeing groups of people hanging around, looks like some kinda tour?
