This restaurant is very close to the Isar and has a beer garden with various specialties (brunch, thai food, etc.). The restaurant itself is very posh. They have lots of thai combination dishes to be shared (15-30 euro per person) and a selection of sushi and japanese specialties. They also specialize in fancy cocktails with a ten euro price tag each. My curry was spicy and very tasty, but my mouth was still watering over the more expensive and exotic looking dishes that were pictured in the menu....if you are a thai fanatic and have money to spare, a good place. If you have a budget, good thai can be found in Munich for cheaper.
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 2:50 pm on 28.Aug.2003Their zipcode is 81379 (They are very close to the Munich zoo) Just came back from this restaurant after trying their 42 all you can eat fresh seafood thai & sushi Brunch. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves Thai cuisine (seafood) and especially to those who are really health conscious as they do not prepare their cuisine with MSG. However, you will have to add the amount of seasoning provided on your own e.g tom yum gung or thai noodle soup. (They have reasonable amount for the condiments) The restaurant owner himself Joseph Peter has his own company in Bangkok and receives weekly supply of fresh thai ingredients which really make it one of a kind. With all the seafood (fresh crabs),curries, sushi, thai & european desserts, fruits, cakes and etc 42 is worth it
Posted by: Andy101 at 2:31 pm on 6.Jun.2004Latest review: We had dinner within Mangostin Asia (Thai Restaurant) with my family and two other friends of mine. For the ala carte set: We tried the Thai set dinner which comprise of Thai Appetiser, Main dish and desserts @ 36 per head. Appetiser and main course all comes in two plate sets. (PLEASE NOTE THAT THEIR APPETISER AND MAIN COURSE ARE NOT PREPARED BY THEIR CHEIF CHEFS) Within the Thai appetiser, there are Lemon grass chicken, Thai spring roll, Thai fish cake, Pineapple sweet and spicy(mild)salad and chicken satay. For this price per person, i expect more servings than just one piece per pax. I find that especially for the lemongrass chicken though beautifully presented, the taste is bland. They have condiments for the appetiser too but for me the sauces are just mild or not so appropriate for some of the dishes within. Main Course: We had Chilli prawns, Thai curry fish, Duck noodles, Mutton and rice. I really like the mutton which is tender and well seasoned. Duck noodles is quite alright but for thai dishes, it just does'nt stands out. Thai fish curry is quite bland. Dessert: We tried both Thai mango with sticky rice and also custard in a coconut...... Their desserts must have been prepared by their master chefs instead of their regular chefs. Overall, i would highly recommend for one who loves buffet brunch (It is nicer than their ala carte!) as it really reminds me of those weekly High Tea or buffet that i had in South East Asia Five stars hotels. However dining as a group for ala carte is not as pleasant as i have imagined. As for beer lovers, they have a wonderful beer garden which has a outdoor sushi bar that prepared fresh sushi. You can also enjoy their Thai cuisine and Mexican food in the beer garden. Last but not least, i will still be back for the Buffet brunch...... :)
Posted by: Andy101 at 3:53 pm on 18.Jun.2004The outpost at the airport is reasonably good and some of the noodle dishes are not as outrageous as the other entrees. A good alternative to the "Hofbrauhaus" upstairs in the Lufthansa terminal or the 1.50 pair of Weisswürste with a pretzel at the Muller shack downstairs.
Posted by: "Patently Obvious" at 12:20 pm on 5.Aug.2004had brunch there last sunday price went up to 44 euro but its worth it all the fish dishes are fresh plus steaks , duck basically everything you could want. we stayed there 3 hours before heading off to the stones concert . did'nt have to eat again for the whole day. For a celebration or a special treat its worth it.
Posted by: "coolerkig" at 11:16 am on 18.Jul.2006I worked for a summer in Mangostin's beergarden. part of my 'pay package' was as much food as I wanted FOR FREE! I go back there quite often their Thai food is second to none, especially the curry platter. Papa Joe's Colonial Bar and restuarant has a very diverse menu with a great selection of wines. well worth a visit, despite it's higher-than-average prices.
Posted by: Moonboot at 9:07 am on 19.Jul.2006Been there for the buffet. Presentations are good but not everything tasted as good as they looked. Prices are ok - taking into account people sit there from 11:30-15:00 and try to stuff down all they can:) But for authentic Asian food, with less hoo-ha, there a few places in Munich that beat Mangostin.
Posted by: "Asian woman" at 3:56 pm on 19.Jul.2006All that Glisters is not gold. Food for foods sake. If you like sitting and being left in a corner unattended to gorge unashamedly on bland, copies of real thai food for three hours this is the place for you. What can I say, I will never go back. I took my wife and son there for the buffet lunch and it was attrocious. The service was awful, 8 euros for a bottle of WATER. and having fallen in love with the previous buffets, was dreadfully dissapointed. The food could not I'm afraid be called Thai any more, but some styalised germanised version, I mean lemon GRASS, not Lemon JUICE in the tom yum. Meat was of very poor quality, service was lacklustre, and in order to get to the buffet from outside you have to walk through a crowd of lounging smoking innatentive staff on their breaks. Most of the fruit was fresh from the can, the cakes were straight out the freezer and the red curry can only be discribed as...well, brown, with what seemed to be half an animal of unknown genome, bones and all lurking in the bottom. A simple request, like, can I have a small spoon for my son took over half an hour to get right and we ended up going to the staff part and getting it ourselves. It took an age to be seated and served and wasnt cheap either at 44 euros a head. Just because its presented beautifully as before, dont be fooled, its not what it was, in fact, nip into your local thai deli and buy some pre packed stuff, it'll taste better. What was once an amazing experience, is more of a trial by culinary sloppiness, They have lost that magic touch and seem to have opted for a bums on seats, anything hotter than a cucumber is too exotic approach, serving lacklustre and watered down copies of what they served previously. Alas, the ( formerly )best thai restaurant in Munich is..sadly.. no more. If you want to be dissapointed I can thoroughly recommend it.

Posted by: "Olivia" at 9:16 pm on 21.Jan.2007Went here last night with some friends. The food was awesome, great variance in tastes, and beautifully presented. I had some Thai Pork with chilies, very tastey and lots of good pork. The service was very attentive, and those special Cocktails- Indian Passion with a chili were so good. True its not cheap, but I won't be going back every week, it was a nice treat.
Posted by: Carm at 10:37 am on 17.Feb.2007went out here last night for a birthday dinner and were not disappointed. we opted for the 3 course meal for 37 each, it wasn't a bad price for the amount of food we got! starter was a mixed platter of, amongst other things, fishcakes, pineapple salad, satay & spring rolls. main course was then crispy duck wih noodles, beef masaman curry, shrimp salad and tuna steaks. don't know how we found space for the yummy dessert which was fresh mango with hot rice, strawberries, fig and coconut sauce. the service was exceptional, we were attended to by 2 waitresses, who took time to describe our courses to us and keep our glasses topped up! definitely going back for the Sunday Brunch buffet soon!
Posted by: Moonboot at 12:34 pm on 22.Feb.2007I went for the buffet lunch recently and was extremely disappointed. Caesar Salad and Proscuitto on a Thai buffet???? Everything tasted the same, the dessert selection was limited and also nearly empty by the time we got to dessert. I would never go back to this restaurant, the only pleasant aspect were the waitresses.
