Lucullus - Munich

Lucullus - Birkenau 31, 81543 Munich, Germany

This is something of a Giesinger secret and shouldn't be missesd. A good mix of simple food well cooked and promptly served at a reasonable to low price, and very respectable quantities - you won't leave hungry. It packs out most Thursday/Friday/Saturday evenings, and don't expect to get a table to yourselves, even if you booked. When it gets busy they pack people in wherever there's space, so if you don't fill your table, expect squatters. Not exactly the place for a romantic dinner for two but fun, and it gets the locals talking to each other. There's even a quiet outdoor seating area for when it's a bit warmer.

Find them on Birkenau 31, Giesing, near where the railway bridge crosses the road.

Hmm... very mixed experience of this place. Cheap beer and reasonably-priced food, but I've found the service to be pretty slow and inconsistent. Food is ok if you like the usual "tonnes of meat on some flavoured rice", and fishy stuff seems to get the thumbs up from friends. One thing: if you make a reservation, particularly a big one, ring up and confirm on the day... on my birthday two years ago, they lost my reservation for 23 people despite it being confirmed twice and them swearing to have written it down. You have been warned! Over all, as long as you don't expect too much from it, then it's fine. Richard

Aye, haute cuisine it isn't, and it can take a little while when they're busy (they get really busy) but for good value reasonable food it remains a Giesing local's favourite. PP

The food here is definately basic, but it tastes ok, and its certainly cheap. I often go here with friends for an unpretentious midweek feedup, especially when it's a nice evening, because the outside area is great and packed with happy families. Its got quite a mediterreanean vibe. Inside is a bit dark and cheerless compared with the buzz and chaos of the terrace.

Lived round the corner (Jamnitzer Str.) in 1991. Went back in 2005 for dinner. Superb... for what it is. Pikilia starter followed by Gyros, washed down with a jug of Mavrodaphne. Not to everyone's taste, but its rustic charm would win most over, I reckon.

I love this place, cheap and cheerful, great value grub, lovely in summer to sit outside into late in the evening.

Probably the best 'bang for the buck' Greek place in Munich. Good service, combined with huge plates of Gyros served in beergarden style patio setup. They have Augie and also Andechs Doppelbock in case you don't like the Retsina.
