La Tazza d'Oro - Munich

La Tazza d'Oro - Hohenzollernstr. 15, 80801 Munich, Germany

I just recently came across a small, hip Italian bistro-cafe called La Tazza d'Oro on Hohenzollernstr. Everytime I would walk by it would be overflowing with couples and professional-looking types taking up all the available little tables spilling onto the sidewalk.

There is a daily menu written on boards throughout the restaurant. The staff is mostly Italian, very friendly and attentive. Presentation of the food is nice, portions are decent but not overflowing like some Italian places. The prices are extremely reasonable – pasta dishes are all under 10 Euros, some as low as 7, and there are some nice, unique offerings.

This is not a pizza place and it is not a place to bring large groups. They do not serve Helles, either, so beware. My guess is that most people here would order at least 2 courses. But it is possible to just go and have a drink.

The clientele is extremely schicky-micky, yet the staff is not pretentious like the customers. I would guess that it is due to the heart of Schwabing location, authenticity, small size (which means it is often packed) and the value for your money that attracts these people in disproportionate numbers. Go and check it out and see what you think. The fashion that arrives here (and the expensive convertibles that ofen park out front) might deter the average Toytown enthusiast, but some will definitely appreciate this lively little spot.

This restaurant is one of my favorites and I eat there sometimes two and three times a week. The staff is INCREDIBLY friendly (one of the only places I have been to where the waiter will sit down next to you and say "ah, kleine Pause" and smile) and the food is also extremely fresh and cooked almost right in front of you (The kitchen is in the restaurant). You do need to get a reservation if you expect to get a table around 7-9pm. But all in all it is a wonderful place!

I have always liked La Tazza D'oro, and go there often, it's not the best italian around, but as mentioned, it's a friendly place with good service and a nice atmosphere. Unfortunately, an experience there last night soured my appreciation of the place. My girlfriend booked a surprise party for me and 15 guests which went swimmingly (and quite drunkenly) until the bill arrived and we found that the 8 bottles of Lugana we had consumed had magically morphed into 16 bottles- a bottle per person, and more than 100€ extra on the bill- which was impossible. We confronted the waiters in as non-confrontational way as possible until they sheepishly agreed and took off 8 bottles from the bill, before giving us all an averna as an apology. I couldn't help thinking they thought we were a drunken 'soft target' and were trying to pull a fast one......
