La Bouille - Neureutherstr. 15, 80799 Munich, Germany

Until early 2004 this address was an Italian restaurant called "Spago". Then it changed hands and is now run by the same team that used to own Werneckhof.
You can just about see the restaurant in the photo above. It's hidden behind the bushy hedge. At least you know they have a nice hedge!

Food was good. Outside seating area was pleasant. Overall positive experience. This review was made for the previous restaurant at this location - Spago. Presumably the seating area outside is still pleasant.

Posted by: "birthdayparty" at 1:02 am on 24.Nov.2005I have eaten many a meal in many countries, and perhaps the best meal for the money I have ever had was the six course menu at La Bouille. 40 euros for the extraordinarily tasty menu, said to be Provencale but I thought French with a strong German accent. Cheap delicious wine by the .2 litre glass, over 1/4 a bottle pour, only 4.4 Euros. Pleasant, warm, efficient service, speaking quite enough English if you don't speak German.
Posted by: "Henry" at 4:41 pm on 7.Feb.2007When we visited La Bouille on a Friday evening it wasn't even half full; not a good sign. The food was good and well presented and the service quick. The atmosphere was however chilly (literally). The temperature was so low that guests kept their jackets on, and the decor (white in almost all directions) looked like a flat ready to move in to. I also wasn't impressed when the waiter recommended a different wine to that which I had chosen and failed to mention that it cost twice the price. All in all dinner came to a breathtaking €140 for two. I'd hesitate to recommend La Bouille to a friend.
Posted by: "APJ" at 2:02 pm on 23.Sep.2007I used to live on Werneckstr. when the restaurant was called Werneckhof. By far, it was for me (and still is) the best meal that you can get in Munich for the money you pay. We only go there on anniversaries and other special occasions but I don't necessarily recommend the restaurant on Valentine's Day. The lamb with "kräuterkruste" is what I always order and the soups are scrumptious too. I have always found the staff to be proud of their jobs and deliver a very professional service. Some might take this as arrogance but, for me, it's a pride thing which isn't bad considering they have good reason to be proud!
Posted by: la mer at 10:19 am on 28.Sep.2007I went to this restaurant with a friend of mine after reading the great reviews it had received here. Boy, were we disappointed! The food was nicely presented, but bland. No taste sensations, nothing special at all- which if I bought it in the freezer section of the local supermarket it would be fine, but for the price you pay for a plate, then.... I've got the "seared" tuna - which was almost cooked through. Pointed that out to the waiter, who nonchalantly proceeded to say no, no, this is the way it's supposed to be... not in the mood to wait another 30 min for the food, and he didn't seem up to agreeing to take it back either for a new plate, I decided to eat it. Well, let's say, frozen food section would've been better! Well, to end our joyful experience, the waiter did ask how the food was, at which point I was honest and said it didn't taste particularly good and the tuna was overcooked. At this time, he proceeded to argue with me that no, obviously it must've been good because I ate a good amount of it (I pointed out that since for the price I have to pay, I'd better) and bla, bla, to which my friend almost fell off the chair with astonishment. I know customer service is an anomaly in Germany, but even my realistic expectations where not achieved. Maybe it was just a bad day on behalf of the staff, but diner beware!
Posted by: "Astounded" at 11:28 am on 5.Oct.2007Seeking a nice French restaurant for a birthday dinner, a friend and I stumbled across La Bouille on this site. Based on the numerous excellent reviews, we decided to try it out and duly turned up for our reserved table on a Saturday night in late September 2007. The restaurant wasn't terribly busy, but people seemed to be having a decent time. Once seated, we ordered a couple of champagne cocktails, which, though they took a little long to arrive, were excellent. I ordered the Mushroom Ravioli as a starter, to be followed by the Braised Kidneys, my friend ordered the Seared Tuna Steak. The Mushroom Ravioli turned out to be smothered in a bland, glutinous brown sauce, with precious little of the flavour I had been hoping for, but it was helped on its way down by an excellent carafe of full-bodied, very tasty red wine. We eagerly tucked in to our main courses, which were very pleasingly arranged and presented. Sadly, the kidneys had a texture I would prefer not to describe, save to say that, even as a seasoned and happy offal-eater, I was mildly disturbed by the excessive crunchy bits, unsure whether it was due to bad quality or bad cooking. Though the flavour of kidney is hard to suppress, the ubiquitous brown sauce made another appearance and almost succeeded in drowning out the flavour of the meat. My friend, looking forward to enjoying a rare, seared tuna steak, was rather surprised to find that it had been cooked all the way through. Assuming there had been some small mistake, she politely drew the waiter's attention to her meal, stating that it was a little overcooked. The waiter asked her to show him, then when she cut into the centre of it for him, squinted, said 'it looks ok to me' and wandered off. Now my friend and I are both Europeans, fairly well-travelled and with no small experience of dining out in fine restaurants. This was the first time I had ever been to a place that considered itself quite high on the quality scale where a waiter greeted a complaint about a meal with argument and apathy. We were somewhat taken aback by this, but resolutely decided to finish our meal without making a scene. When clearing our plates, the same waiter asked whether everything had been to our satisfaction. My friend very civilly said that, apart from the fact that her tuna had been overcooked, the meal had been fine. To which the waiter's response was to tell her that it surely couldn't have been that bad based on the fact that she had eaten most of it. We left without delay and I'm afraid there was no tip to speak of. Certainly we won't be recommending La Bouille to anyone very much in the future.
Posted by: "Mildly Disgruntled" at 11:35 am on 5.Oct.2007Really??? We had a great meal there about three months ago, so I am very surprised to hear the complains. We had Prie Fixe for two, which I forget how many courses but long enough to lounge around for a couple of hours. The service was very good too. Maybe a bit slow? But I won't go there if I were in any kind of hurry. Since we are smokers, we are only waiting for the weather to get warmed up so that we can dine outside. Despite the negative reviews, I am definately going back and would recommend to anyone.
