Kaito - Gabelsbergerstrasse 85, Munich, Germany

Note, Kaito was previously located at Theresienstraße 47 in Maxvorstadt but moved sometime before 2006. The photo above is from the Theresienstraße address.
This is a very good restaurant, the best Japanese one we went to in Munich. It is a little expensive but isn't every good Japanese restaurant a bit expensive? You will find sushi's as well as meat, fish and vegetarian meals. The restaurant is popular so best to reserve in advance.
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 11:02 am on 28.Jun.2003Very nice Shushi. They are having 50% off discount during the summer holidays (2 Aug to 31 Aug), take the chance.
Posted by: "kimli" at 11:01 pm on 2.Aug.2005I've been there yesterday. I agree the food is excellent (no comparision with a running sushi, for example). However, I don't go there for eating sushis, because I personnally prefer the others meals: big choice in "Vorpseisen" and Sashimis... Important to note: the 50% discount is offered on Sushis ONLY (they celebrate their Jubileum: 5 years).
Posted by: "JC" at 8:37 am on 9.Aug.2005Went there a couple of nights ago. The sushi is excellent, but even with the 50% discount was quite expensive. Beer was also expensive at 4.50 for a 0,33 bottle. Atmosphere was good as it's a small place. Lots of japanese customers were there, which is always a sign that a japanese restaurant is good.
Posted by: "Baka Gaijin" at 11:10 am on 2.Sep.2005went here a couple of weeks ago - we were the only people in the restaurant who weren't Japanese, so I agree, this has to be a good sign. To confirm everything else everyone has been saying, the sushi is excellent, but yes expensive. We tried the standard menu and really enjoyed all the different dishes - together with a bottle of wine, we paid Euro 90. We have relatively small appetites and so found the menu taster a bit filling, but it made a change not to come away from a sushi restaurant still feeling like you could eat a bit more. I lost my taste for sushi for a while as it always seemed to be the same experience, but I'm happy to say that has all changed thanks to Kaito. Would definitely recommend it, although, it's not really the candelit dinner experience for those looking for romance over a miso soup.
Posted by: "jmb" at 6:49 pm on 14.Oct.2005Based on the reviews we went here for dinner last night and were not dissapointed. The service was good if a bit tentative, the fish was easily the best and freshest we have had in Munich, and they even had masu (small wooden boxes) for the sake... As previously mentioned by other reviewers, it is not cheap, but was most certainly worth the price!
Posted by: "Tim" at 10:38 am on 3.Mar.2006Went there yesterday. This is the best place in Munich to eat Sushi. But watch out, they moved to Gabelsbergerstrasse 85. So now they have more space.
Posted by: "Michael" at 9:21 am on 27.Jul.2006Went back to Kaito last night, our first visit since they moved to the new location. Something has certainly changed - the sushi and sashimi are still excellent, the Uni was very fresh and perfectly prepared, yet something had changed, the owners perhaps? The waitresses were scurrying around, things were a little unorganized but where last visit it was cute this time it was a bit annoying. In addition, the new location is broken up into several small rooms and you should be prepared to share a table with strangers - a truly Bavarian sushi experience. Still good food, probably still the best in town (along with Toshi) but not the two thumbs up that it used to be.

Posted by: "Michelangiolo" at 5:25 pm on 1.Jan.2008In my opinion, one of the best Japanese in Germany, maybe also one of the best in Europe. Rivals with the best in Düsseldorf. Not cheap but fantastic. You have to try the Akebono menu with superior quality fish: toro, unagi, etc. Great assortment of cold sakes. Only drawback is the decoration and atmosphere which is a bit too Bavarian. Still one of the best culinary treats for advanced connaisseurs.
