Went to Kafer for the second time this week, with my Frau Fiona. This time it was for Friday lunch. It was reasonably priced for a high quality restaurant and the food was excellent. We had the lunch 'special', a choice of 3 courses. During the meal, Michael Kafer came and said hello which was a nice touch. Whilst the food and the restaurant were excellent be aware of the high cost of the extras. They charge you for the bread (surprising considering the overall cost of the meal), a LOT for a bottle of water, wine ain't cheap, costly expressos etc.. all added up to quite a tidy sum for lunch. Service was very good and certainly an experience to repeat. We won't be so frivolous with the extras at lunchtime in the future though. Plan to go back November time - once we've saved up!! Dekaboot
Posted by: "dekaboot" at 9:26 pm on 18.Aug.2004The Kafer bistro is the most charming luncheon-brunch place in Munich, a great discovery, and a very pleasant space. The menu is light, varied, and beautifully presented. Fresh flowers every day. James is the most charming bartender I have met in an age; equal to the best at 21 in New York. Prices are reasonable for what you get...this is a world-class cuisine. Going with a date is best; the crowd is middle aged, although kids are often there on Saturday. They close at 8, at 4 on Saturday.

Posted by: "nazir ajma" at 2:28 pm on 11.Jun.2006We visited here for a quiet Saturday lunch. The food/service were spot on, portions were normal size rather than Bavarian (so no post-meal bloat) and all beautifully presented. The menu was compartively limited, but further evidence that it was all freshly cooked and not 'chicken ping' as is sometimes the case with endless menus. The kitchen is open plan and in full view of the diners. We were in the inside restaurant upstairs, not the street-cafe. It was interesting to see the nearby private banquetting rooms (empty at this time of day so was able to snoop around) - truly how the other half live. Pricey but good value for the overall proposition/ambience/service.

Posted by: melrose at 6:29 pm on 15.May.2007Can a restaurant be casual and exquisite at the same time? The Kaefer bistro pulls it off. Everything is perfectly crafted, thoughtfully presented, and the details are expertly judged. Excellence without pretense. ALWAYS order the staff's recommendations--they know what the best, freshest meat, fish and produce arrived that day. At their behest, I sampled an exquisite melt-in-the-mouth oxtail (not heavy, like so much German beef) matched with a surprising Austrian shiraz. That's right, Austrian, not Australian. I'm more than a fan of Kaefer. I'm a believer.
