Joe Peñas - Buttermelcherstr. 17, 80469 Munich, Germany
Joe Peñas is a Mexican restaurant and bar that serves - guess what? Tacos, fajitas, burritos, nachos and so on. The food is actually pretty tasty and the portions are OK as far as size is concerned. Special note about the guacamole: they make it in front of you, which we are reliably informed is a good sign.

The décor is a mix of what you can find in all the other Tex-Mex bars in Munich. There is a swordfish like they have in Juleps, the tables and chairs look like those in Sausalitos, Enchilada or Tijuana. Nothing original, you have seen it all before.
I was there one night and a bunch of Mexican guys dressed in sombreros were trying to make a living singing (actually destroying) La Cucaracha or Commandante Che Guevara, which gave the place an authentic ambience. The crowd is late twenties to forties, international and noisy. I would not give them the Best Cocktails of Munich Award but I would not give them the Worse Cocktails Award either. Lets say average plus.

Incidently, Tijuana, Juleps, and Joe Peñas are all owned by the same company. So I guess that explains any similarity you might spot.

This will fix your Mexican cravings but not all that great. Packed on weekends - better to try a weeknight. Good margaritas and Mexican beer available.

Posted by: "Mack" at 3:48 pm on 28.Jul.2003some time ago it was without any doubt the best mexican restaurant in munich. those times are over. the food is acceptable and the cocktails a bit above the average. prices are a bit mean (like nearly everywhere else in munich) the worst = i hate to have to share a table with more people every single bloody time !!! 5 out of 10 - my score
Posted by: "L.G." at 4:02 pm on 21.Dec.2003I didn't find the food to be that bad. The fajitas are pretty good, if a bit too sweet. I liked the atmosphere, and so did my guests.
Posted by: "Al" at 8:20 pm on 24.Feb.2004In my opinion this is the best mexican restaurant in Frankfurt, both for food and also for ambience. Great cocktails too. Get here before 8pm and you have half price happy hour cocktails! Would recommend any of the fajitas, especially the Red Snapper Fajitas. :) Would advise booking
Posted by: "Little Britain" at 5:35 pm on 6.Dec.2006Your hunger's best served on a Sunday in Joe's when they offer all you can eat Fajitas. At 12 euros a head, it's well worth the money.
Posted by: RebellionLies at 2:52 pm on 27.Jul.2007Really unfortunate Mexican food... I swore the 'salsa' was actually marinara and the fajitas are not seasoned whatsoever. I wasn't impressed with the 'all you can eat' fajitas - good luck trying to eat more than one serving. The Margaritas made the trip ok because after drinking a pitcher you begin to laugh at this sorry attempt for Mexican food.
