Islay - Munich

Islay - Thierschstr. 14, 80538 Munich, Germany

Update: Bar closed as of early 2008. See comments at very bottom of page.

Islay-the-restaurant is named after Islay-the-island which is located off the south-west coast of Scotland.

This tiny island is famous for being home to six whisky distilleries which produce some of the finest single malts in the world.

The restaurant stocks all six of these whisky types, plus more than 104 others as well. Not only that, they also serve excellent food.

The owner is a German lady called Ulli Putz and the cuisine is international.

Their food is okay at best. The atmosphere and service are good. The bar area is very relaxing. They are never crowded.

Visited Islay last night with my wife for a wee celebration dinner. Service was excellent, the atmosphere was relaxing, romantic and comfortable, and the food was superb. Whoever said the food was 'OK at best' must have been to a different restaurant. All in all a great night. And it is SO nice to have friendly, professional and attentive service for a change. I for one will definately be back at the earliest possible time even if just for a browse through the whisky menu. Special occasion? Can't recommend it highly enough.

Geographical correction: Islay is most definetely not located off the SW Coast of Scotland!

So where would you say it *is* located then? To claim that something is false but then to not give the correct info is not particularly helpful According to my map Islay is located off the west coast of Scotland and in the southern half of the country. That's pretty much "off the SW coast" in my opinion. Here's a map, if you can be bothered to check: Scotland map

That part of world is referred to by the Scots as the west coast, wether that's geographically correct or not. I'm from the SW. Folk from Islay would feel unduly flattered (not!) if you said they were from Galloway. Anyway, our sheep are far more attractive. So I'm told.

Nothing to do with the sheep ... From someone who is from the West Coast (the Isle of Skye)we would be very "unflattered" to be called South Western !! ;-)) Tut tut ...

Doonhame(r), Would you by any chance be from dumfries,

Islay is not SW, it is West. Although it is very nice, they are not Doonhamers. We are far more beautiful and clever, obviously. Signed D&G's Cultural Ambassador to Germany (ha ha)

As a fellow doonhamer, I concur. Having spent the first 20 years of my life in Dumfries, I must agree that whilst Islay is indeed a magnificent island full of some of the best malts in the country / world, it does indeed lie off the West coast and is not home to the mighty QOS. The isle of man is the only island that lies to the south west of Scotland, hence the term Western Isles I thought this was a restaurant review, someone start a new topic. :-)

Well, glad that's finally sorted out then. I mean, you just can't go and confuse the West Coast with the SW. Fantastic there are other Doonhamers here, of all places. A very rare breed. QOS? No way, Threave Rovers! And all this rain is making me a bit homesick. Not much mind...

Went in twice this week, once for after dinner drinks and the second time around for a proper meal. Very nice atmosphere and the people at our table were happy with both the service and food. They have very nice interior seating as well as outdoor seating. On nice nights, probably best to reserve a table if you want to sit under the trees, as the outdoor area was full on both nights that I visited. Only recommendation, do not order the loup de mer if your planning to sit outside..its mostly dining by candlelight only so I had a hard time working around the fish bones. Should have thought of that ahead of time though....

We went here for a team event and it was really good. We done the whiskey tasting together with dinner. Gave alot of euros out but priceworthy I must say. The food was of excellent quality! The consultancy with the Whiskey Tasting was very good and the fine detailed explanations really made the difference. A good old "drunken" night was had by all and can highly recommend it as an a good alternative team event.

is this place still open? I went last night and it was all closed up and dark, and there was no sign there, and the last menu on the board was Oct/Nov.

I've been there on December 8th and I had an good experience, very good food and good service. Seen them closing on January 1st after Sylvester party while walking back to my place.

Closing for good ? I hope not, I love this restaurant / bar.

Hi, walked by the other day. Looks totally dismantled in there. This place is definitely closed :(

Posted by: "dbx" at 5:03 pm on 11.Mar.2008

It's not clear whether this parrot is dead, or just resting. I also walked past the other evening. Although the place is indeed totally dismantled, they might just be renovating. I guess we'll have to wait a few months and see.

Yes, I seem to recall I mentioned this elsewhere on the forum, but it is now closed. My information was that the building was taken over which caused the bar to be closed. The owner is looking for other premises in the same area to open a new version, which will probably be a bit smaller.

anybody walked by recently, is this closed definitely or is it reborn?
