Hofbräukeller - Innere Wiener Str. 19, 81667 Munich, Germany

The Hofbräukeller is one of Munich's major beer halls and beer gardens. On nice summer evenings the garden is always packed. To one side of the beer garden, by the side entrance, there is a cocktail bar called Sausalitos.

Good basic German food. Quality beer, friendly service. Great biergarten!

Nice food, excellent beer, but the service is terrible if you're in the beerhall inside. Of course, the beergarden is self-service so that doesn't mattter...

I agree with Jen Canale. This is one of my favorite places in Munich. In decent weather the beer garden is one of the best. Fredericks comments must reflect an off day as we've eaten in here many many times and 90% of the time it's great - however there have been bad days but that happens in the best places as well. Overall - it's reasonably English tosspot tourist free and a pleasant place to spend an hour or three. DB

An update. Went here a few times over the last couple of weeks and once again the service was wildly inconsistent. Sometimes it was great however last Saturday was appalling inside. Staff weren't interested in serving at all (approx 9pm) so we left and went to the Paulaner beer garden on Hochstrasse which was better, but not by much. Seems like on a Saturday night the staff wish they were elsewhere. Dekaboot

You are better off being in the beer garden there in good weather because it is self-service there so at least you will get served. That is more than can be said for inside the place.

I go here a lot and while the staff will not win any awards, I find them to be friendly and prompt (okay, not always friendly). Food is better than average (sometimes just average) but atmosphere is always nice (both inside and out). Thumbs up!

We don't have any complaints about the service at the Hofbräu Keller. We reserved a seat and we were promptly brought to a table and immediatly served (in a friendly and polite manner) when asked. If you want to get a 'taste' of the true Munich atmosphere ... and good food ... go to the Hofbräu Keller.

Too crowded, too noisey and far too many tourists. Prices are too high. Can find better Authentic German atmostphere (Gemutlichkeit)at smaller Beer Gardens in the same area. And better beer.

You miserable GIT!!!

So which are the "better beer gardens" in the same area? Please share your remarkable insight with the rest of us. Thanks.

My personal favorite is the Augustiner Keller near Hackebrueke. Chinese tower and Seehaus aren't bad either.

Posted by: chucktduck at 10:57 am on 23.Aug.2005

Yep, those three are nice. But they're not quite in the same area, are they? George F Strauch specifically said there are nicer smaller beer gardens in the same area - and by that one would presume he means the Haidhausen area. So which beer gardens are there in Haidhausen which are "smaller, better, and more authentic"?

next time you're in the Hofbrauhaus look at the swirly blue and white ribbon designs on the ceiling...still swastika shaped! they painted over the original swastikas but it's a poor job tbh.

@ J.C. There is a list of the Munich beer gardens at Munich Beer Gardens

Posted by: chucktduck at 12:25 pm on 23.Aug.2005

Yes, but the only one listed for Haidhausen is this one. As I said in a comment earlier, name me another beer garden in the area - i.e. in Haidhausen. Is that question really so difficult to understand?

Posted by: "J.C." at 12:36 pm on 23.Aug.2005

other biergärten in Haidhausen. --> Muffathalle: really nice and green, with view of the isar --> Tassilogarten: from outside a little bit scary, placed on a really loud street. But the Biergarten, right beside the Wirtshaus, it´s not that bad --> Unionsbräu: has a Biergarten in the courtyard. These are the 3 Biergärten i know in Haidhausen. Other places have smaller ones (e.g. Preyisngkeller, Zum Kloster) which are rather "Terassen" than Biergarten.

Non-smoking section is a seperate "Stuberl" at the back of the main large room. It also has a supervised indoor play area for kids (Kinderland) and offer Kids meals.
