Havana Club Bar - Munich

Havana Club Bar - Herrnstr. 30, 80539 Munich, Germany

Havana Bar is a very useful bar to know. If you find yourself in the center of town and needing a cool place to go for a drink or two, then Havana Bar can nearly always be relied upon. Maybe you've just been refused entry to the nearby Erste Liga or Atomic Café, unlikely but it does happen sometimes, well, Havana Bar will be a good fall back. There is no door staff, and the place is never completely full. It's usually just nicely busy. They make good cocktails and play cool music - not too loud either.

really awesome place! Great atmosphere, friendly bar staff and some of the best cocktails that I've had in all of munich! Definitely recommend going there to try it out. They aren't too expensive either!

I've gotta disagree on both counts. First, the statement "They aren't too expensive"... Beers are 3.80 for a 0,4 Spaten. Pretty steep, in my opinion. Cocktails start at 7.50, and it's 10 Euro for a small Long Island Ice Tea (emphasis on the "small"). The large LIIT (what I would consider normal) is 16 Euro! Even worse, I've been disappointed with every cocktail I've gotten. For those prices, there are plenty of bars within walking distance that will make you much better cocktails. Staff is friendly enough, and the atmosphere is good, but the overpriced beer and mediocre cocktails just kill it for me.

I couldn't be arsed to wait for Atomic Cafe to open. So, after walking past and peering into the window, I decided to chance it, even though it had absolutely nothing going on inside. I strolled in (Thursday 27 Feb 2009) at about 2215 - yep, it was pretty sedate alright. The decor looks like a straight mans attempt at being cool, and chic at the same time (I'm straight, and oblivious to most things and I noticed it, so it's pretty obvious). It's quite dark - deep reds I seem to recall - and the music is low and slow bluesy/jazzy style. There are a few large, very peculiar prints hanging on the wall. The image on one of them is simply indescribable (in a very strange sort of way), you'll recognise it when you get there; it hangs in the center of the wall furthest from the entrance. Immediately above the bar is a stereotypical "Havana Club Rum" advertisement. Now, those of you who drink will know that Havana Club is actually not that great, even for rum (which isn't a great drink in the first place), so I find it odd that it has developed enough of a mystic that it is used as a theme for a bar. In fact this is almost a metaphor for the Havana Club Bar. The 'private sitting' area (which you encounter when you walk in) is draped in red (purple) velvet curtains, and is decorated in a completely different style to the rest of the bar. I'm not exactly sure why this was made to stand out so distinctly, but the effect of it is that you don't dare sit there. I ordered a Hells which was served quickly and efficiently, but got zero vibe from the bartender (I even tried to make conversation, but he had nothing of it). I guess single, bald, middle-aged men are not their preferred clientele. There were about 10-12 other customers, some of whom were served food while I was there. This took me by surprise, because I didn't see any indication that food was available (of course, I've already told you, I'm oblivious), but I couldn't see what it was, and didn't eat myself, so I can't comment on that. One thing I did notice was that the bartender was meticulously clean. Every dish that made its way back to the bar area was cleaned immediately, and placed carefully back into its correct location. Why do I mention that? I guess there was so little else going on, that that was all I had to hold my interest.

From viewing the list, one can clearly see that Palin has consulted a wide and diverse array of sources for various media too. ,
