Hard Rock Cafe - Platzl 1, 80331 Munich, Germany
Tel. 089 2429490
Take the U/S Bahn to Marienplatz
Global Website: Hard Rock Cafe
The cafe has a non-smoking section.
The food was overcooked and had very little taste. The service was alright, if not just a bit rough. The place is like an echo chamber, a major tourist trap.
Posted by: "Andrea" at 10:45 am on 4.Nov.2003I eat at the Hard Rock Cafe regularly and belive me, Andrea´s comments are unfair. The HRC has the friendliest staff in Munich that I have ever come across. The food is excellent, especially the Nachos (incredible value, more than enough for two persons), the BBQ Bacon cheeseburger is the best burger I have ever had served up in Munich (been living here for 10 years) and there are other dishes that I and my employees have had that have also been excellent. It is true that the place can sometimes be a bit loud, but if you ask to have the music turned down a bit they will do that for you, but as far as the acustics go, I never noticed any echo. Last but not least...tourist "trap"? What exactly is that supposed to mean?? That you might (well) have English speaking, non Germans, perhaps even tourists (by God!) eating at the table next to you? Uh, someone please let me know how that could (remotely) affect your dining experience negatively. I mean, it´s not as if you can´t get a table and/or have to wait on line for an hour to get in the place. If that was the case, as the owner of Mike´s Bike Tours, I would likely not be writing this right now, rather would be on vacation in Hawaii with my family. Oh, and by the way, the Happy Hour with 1/2 priced drinks AND APPETIZERS is a great value and place to meet up after work.
Posted by: "Mike" at 9:50 pm on 6.Dec.2003Been to the Hard Rock Cafe once, and will never go back. The burger I had was like plastic, and the service was slow and not particularly friendly.
Posted by: "Dave" at 10:44 pm on 6.Dec.2003I have to admit that the food I had here was also good... the burger was very juicy. When I have visitors in town that like HRC, I am happy to oblige them. It's convenient to eat decent food here and then hop over to the Hofbrauhaus for beer.
Posted by: "Frank" at 1:41 pm on 7.Dec.2003okay, I am not a big fan of the HRC at all and have to admit the bad critics are often right BUT it is unfair to judge the staff so bad. If it is crowded and loud many orders get mixed up, you wait for ages for your food and sometimes you can see that the nerves of the servers are pretty blank. The food is actually nice but in my opinion too expensive but if ur willing to pay the price the food is good. If not you can complain and they will try to comfort you somehow. So, i wouldn't go there for dinner but of course a coffe or so is nice to have there if the music is not too loud and it is true that they will lower it if you'd ask them. the concerts there are often pretty good too. Have a look on the programme. In happy hour they have really good prizes. What they have too is an VIP Card called "All Access" It is 27 Euro but on the Card, it's like an internal credit card, is already 20, plus u get a 5 voucher for ur purchase. U get that in a so called "rucksack" which is more or less a plastic bag and 3 pins of two HRC on the planet. You can sell them in ebay and some people pay a lot of money so u actually make money by buying that card and can skip a line if there is any in HRC cafe's etc all over the world.
Posted by: bubblylady at 5:07 pm on 27.Jan.2004Atmosphere is fun, food is horrid. I had a salad full of brown lettuce (in summer, mind you) that tasted like it was sprayed with chemicals and a mediocre burger. For a better burger, check out the Irish pub right behind the Frauenkirche (Killians?).
Posted by: "Al" at 8:49 pm on 24.Feb.2004Food is Ok. Happy-Hour-After-Work specials are great! Good music and videos and overall loud, fun atmosphere. AND it's pleasantly not smokey.
Posted by: "T&A" at 10:50 pm on 2.May.2004Been there once. First and last time. Absolutely dreadful. Food and service was awful. Good enough location and decent interior but that's where the good news ends. Once you get bored with the service and poor food, you can have a wander about and look at the memorabilia to take your mind off the money you've just wasted.
Posted by: "Dekland" at 7:40 pm on 9.May.2004I visit HRC quite a bit but usually for drinks, appetizers and burgers. I think the burgers rate highly. Happy hour is from 4 to 7 and you get two for one drinks and half price appetizers. Since I usually go for just the specials like that I can't vouch for the other items on the menu like the pork shank. Desserts are pretty large but will cost you. As to the service: The german staff are jerks and have treated me and mine like scum everytime we are served by them. They are rude, short, and everything is "not their fault". The 'native english' servers are EXCELLENT and I ask for them every time and have developed a great rapport. John (big djan) owns the place, Charlie (a girl) is great, and so is Susie. Then there is Eric and Max. Roberto just transfered over from Tres Hombres and I still know the menu better than he, but he is the bees' knees as far as service. There are a couple of others as well but I am sure I will meet them soon. Plus you can join the HRC club and get 10% or 5 euros off each purchase (including merchandise) for a small entry fee. I have already gotten that back several times over. I wouldn't recommend it as a TT hang out because of the loud music. But on the upside, they have bands perform there often. So go grab a beer, listen to some music, don't eat the steak and have a good time. -prof
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 3:24 pm on 1.Jul.2004Been there last night - fantastic Live Music - Gerry & Gerry Band - got in a waiting line for a table but only took them 10 min. to find us one - great service from a German girl Briggi - nice appetizers
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 11:10 am on 13.Nov.2004we were there last night -- they'll do your burger rare, which I've been told is against German law. The nonsmoking section is small, but they also didn't have the video turned on and the loudspeakers were off, which we greatly appreciated because the rest of the place was looooooud. Fries were overdone, ask them to watch it. The menu's full of stuff I miss, and their approximation of it is better than nothing -- I'm trying the milkshake next time. The pulled pork sandwich was fine, but the barbecue sauce should've been mixed with the meat, not just put on top of it.
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 12:27 pm on 15.Nov.2004I was there for my birthday and all the staff (servers, cook, managers,...) came to my table with an ice cream with a sparkler on it and sang "Happy Birthday" for me... Was a big surprise as I didn't know that my friend told them it's my birthday. I'm really impressed by the attentiveness of the staff! It's hard to find such a friendly service in a German restaurants!
Posted by: "Maggi" at 5:33 pm on 9.Dec.2004Hi all I have had so many great experiences and meals in Hard Rock, it's hard to count them! I just keep going back for more. The staff are always friendly and helpful and the service is streets ahead of the norm in Germany (granted that isn't hard) and it's easy to forget we are in Munich / Germany when we go there. The food is great - try the potato skins or chicken tenders to start and the hamburgers or pig sandwich for a main course. They don't break the bank, are always good and portions are huge. We often go down for the live music and even saw Gary & Gary recently.... who have supported some big names in the music scene. For 5 entry including a drink, it's probably the cheapest live music venue in Munich. I can't say that I agree with the negative postings here - it hasn't been my experience. Like in all places, I'm sure something goes wrong occasionally, but it's a shame to give the place a bad posting on a one off experience. Hope you all try it, and enjoy it as much as I do!
Posted by: "Karen" at 9:47 am on 13.Dec.2004Hey! I wonder if 'karen' might work for HRC!
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 11:15 pm on 15.Jan.2005I go to the HRC every now and then. I have even celebrated my birthday there for 2 years in a row. Everytime I go, I have a good time. As an American, it's really great to get food that is hard to come by here in Germany like burgers, wings and nachos etc.
Posted by: chucktduck at 10:49 am on 28.Jan.2005Okay I checked out the brunch at the Hard Rock Cafe. Overall I would say it was good value and okay eats for the price. I'd probably try a few other places before going back but I´d recommend it for people looking for: 1. cheap brunch eats: the bill was 11.oo euros total, drinks included. Kids get a balloon and eat for 5euros or so. The buffett included: cereal, canned fruit, cold cut slices (cheddar cheese, salami, ham, roast beef), croissants, rolls, scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, pancakes & syrup, sausage and bacon. The drinks included coffee and pitchers of various bottled juices and regular coke. The desserts included cheescake and brownie squares, both seemed dry and not worth the calories. 2. kid friendly: this looks like it could be a happening place for peeps with mini-peeps. The place is big enough to accomodate all the various prams, high chairs, plus I didnt notice anyone smoking. Note the restrooms are down stairs, I cant recall if there was a changing table. It was big and clean but major complaint: all the stalls but one were out of paper. I add that as all my lady friends with kids always want to know about location and condition of the restrooms. A couple of additional comments. Its an early deal, the buffet ends promptly at 11:30 as lunch menu gets put out at 12:00. Call in advance to make sure the brunch is being offered and reservations for large groups definitely recommended. You pay the tab before you get seated so the table service is pretty much clearing plates only...and not too frequently during the rush. If your really looking to get your eats on, I'd recommend going early and reserving an extra spot to stack your plates.
Posted by: jml at 12:10 am on 28.Feb.2005Ate there yesterday during their special 34th birthday celebration. I had there offer - a big bacon burger for 71 cent and a Long Island drink. It was great to have the opportunity to get such an offer (as one of the 34 first guest that day), however, I do agree with some of the comments here. The burger had no taste, was very greasy and gave me a stomach ache. But the staff was friendly (though a bit pushy as we did not order that much), they didn't mind having pictures taken of themselves by other guests there. And I really like the fudge brownie I got as desert.
Posted by: "Jutta" at 10:10 am on 15.Jun.2005Buffalo wings?? I expect most German restaurants to screw this up and subsitute dry, overcooked flavourless wings for the real thing, but as an American institution, the Hard Rock Cafe ought to know better. Shameful.
Posted by: "Chris Hook" at 7:07 pm on 9.Oct.2005It took the length of 6 music videos to not get two Helles and a menu there last night. That'll teach me to order something complicated.
Posted by: "Yeti" at 9:31 am on 17.Nov.2005The last time I'll visit here! We arrived for lunch at 12, were seated and then promptly given a list of items by the waitress of all the things that WEREN'T available on the menu. Burgers, ribs etc. It was easier to ask what actually was available. In the end, we chose the fajitas. Only to be told, sorry we don't have any guacamole today, can we just give you extra sour cream. Hmmm. And I suppose running over the road to Kaufhof, buying a couple of avocados and making it fresh is obviously out of the question? The kids meals arrived but no sign of any fajitas. Until.... a plate with the wraps and sour cream arrived but no chicken. "Really sorry but we gave your chicken to someone else. Can you wait." No was the answer. Just cancel it and get the bill please. Spoke to the manager who apologised but said that "their deliveries from England had been messed up" which was why so many things weren't available. What? You're telling me that the HRC gets its ribs, pork burgers and guacamole delivered from the UK??? And when you only have 10 guests eating lunch, you still manage to give someone else's order to the wrong table?? Never again.
Posted by: "Angie" at 9:43 am on 3.Aug.2006After being seated for a group dinner (which included three children), we were told that the entire children's menu was unavailable! The main courses of burgers and chicken arrived at different times and when it came, the grilled herb chicken resembled a charred, dried-up piece of leather and didn't taste much better. The accompanying portions of fries were the smallest I've ever been served. An expensive disappointment.
Posted by: "Swimming Kermit" at 7:28 am on 29.Aug.2006I visited the Hard Rock cafe in Munich in December 2003. I met a girl who worked there in the souvenier section called Naomi. She was Australian and from Perth. I was wondering if anyone had any contact infomation on her. Thanks Trent. theadhotman@yahoo.com.au
Posted by: "Trent" at 8:11 am on 5.Mar.2007I was in Munich in February 2007 and I decided to visit the HRC...it was beautiful!!!I was walking in the doen-town of the city and, my classmates and me had a idea..."why don't we go to the HRC?"Yes,good idea but...where is it?!?We asked to the people but...not all of could give us the information we needed, and...it was funny, isn't it? "Ich weise es nicht, entschuldigung!" "Ich kenne nicht das!!" were usually the answers. When we found the HRC (after 1 hour!!!),it was overcrowded by us...we bought T-Shirt expecially: it is an order!!!But when I come back to Italy,my mother said:"what is this HRC?"So my question is...is so popular or...is it popular just between the guys?!?!?!?!
Posted by: "BabyDoll" at 1:07 pm on 6.Jun.2007Overpriced, lousy food. I had the regrettable idea, taking friends for a Thanksgiving dinner to the H.R.C. We paid over 35 Euro per person, and really had a horrible meal. But I guess most people frequenting the H.R.C. don’t go for food in the first place. Even their drink are expensive and nothing to write mother home about. A noisy place with the charm of a train station. Sorry to be so blunt.
Posted by: z-man99 at 8:36 am on 19.Apr.2008kind of random, but here goes... if Hard Rock Cafe is an american Institution, a) does it have the american drinking age? and b) do they hire americans without a work permit, just like as if it were in a military base? thanks
Posted by: herrdebonnaire at 3:21 am on 11.Jan.2009Last Friday we had the American Stammtisch in the LP Lounge of the HRC. Service was friendly and very fast. I personally savored the "real" American wings and brownie à la mode.
