Forschungsbrauerei is a traditional brew-pub and beer garden in the south of Munich. The beer garden has room for 250 people. Although there is also inside seating, the pub is closed in the winter.
Although not Munich's most beautiful beer garden, this is a popular destination for beer lovers, since the Forschungsbrauerei (literally "Research Brewery") brews two very special beers. The Pilsissimus Export beer has an intense taste more commonly found in Franconia than in Munich, while the St. Jakobus Blonder Bock is a blond Bockbier, a style that is rarely to be seen in Munich (Andechs is the only other brewery in the region to brew such a style).
There is an extensive menu of traditional Bavarian food, with table service.

Good to see that the Forschungsbrauerei is now in the restaurant reviews. I also wanted to mention that they sell bottled beer and old wooden kegs of beer at the Bräustüberl (and if you are courageous they have homemade Bittermalz and Malzlikör). They are closed during part of the winter, but open back up at the end of February for the Starkbierfest. The half chicken is their specialty.
Posted by: BrewZ at 1:02 am on 12.Jul.2008I think this place is fabulous! When I was there, they took great care to get the ceramic mugs to exactly the proper temperature before serving the beer. We ordered the Brathendl (Chicken) - despite the warning that it takes an hour. Maybe it was that we were starving when the chicken came, but it was astonishingly good. It's a bit of a ride out there, but worth the effort if you are serious about your beer.
