Edison & Co. - Schulstr. 28, Munich, Germany

Thomas Alva Edison was an American scientist who, in 1879, invented the first commercially practical incandescent electric lamp. The theme of this restaurant, as quoted from their website, is "to honor the most prolific inventors and creative geniuses of our time". I've never heard of another restaurant with such a theme as this. It's certainly different. And it seems to work!!! The restaurant has a great atmosphere.

The cuisine is international. On the menu are starters (soup, salad, chicken wings, potato skins, etc.) for €4 to €6. The main dishes (burgers, steaks, fish, duck, etc.) cost €9 to €12. There are choices to suit every taste including 4 or 5 different vegetarian options. During holiday seasons they offer special menus that you might not be able to get anywhere else in Munich. For example there is a special roast turkey menu throughout the week of American Thanksgiving.

The restaurant is located 5 minutes walk from Rotkreuzplatz, in the heart of Neuhausen. After you've eaten here, a good place to move onto for an after dinner drink would be the Irish Pub, Ryan's Muddy Boot, which is just around the corner.

Thanks pablo! It's now fixed. I never knew anyone actually used this voucher anyway. If you do use it, be sure to report back on what you thought of Edison's. Good or Bad. Cheers!

we went to edisons last nite and used the voucer.. i'd definately go back.. it was a cute place, not too big, kinda quite, but nice. the waiter was friendly and the food was good, and big portions, maybe too big. i had an edison cheese burger..the burger was huge and it came with alotta fries and 3 dips (ketchup, sour creme and bbq sauce). so yea, i'd recommend it.

I went to Edison's last night -- it was 19:30 on a Wednesday, so this is my impression of that particular night. The inside looks a lot less cozy than it does in the photo above. Many tables were reserved so we shared a table with a couple of chain smokers. The place absolutely reeked of stale cigarettes and was filled with cig. smoke. There was no wine on the menu so I asked about it -- yes indeed, there was red wine but was just told the type (merlot, cabernet sauvignon), not the brand or price. Got the cabernet but suspected he had given me the merlot instead. It was very warm and found out later it cost 4.50. In my opinion, not worth it. As for the food, I ordered the Grosser Salat mit Frühlingsrollen, Krabbenchips, Sprossen & Dip. I pointed it out to him on the menu itself because it's quite a mouthful. :) What he brought me was 6 spring rolls and a 1/2 cup of salad drowned in what looked like pink mayonnaise. Since it was my first time there, I didn't realize he had mistakenly given me the appetizer ... so I ate it and didn't complain. The spring rolls were crunch, hot, and basically good. My dining companion had the Edison pizza, which is now onions, cabbage, bacon, peppers, and goat's cheese. It was supposed to have tomatoes on it as well but didn't. It was soggy and bare and fell apart when you'd pick a piece up. You know Germans eat anything - not too picky - but even he wasn't too impressed with it. Even the bacon was soggy. On a good note, the service was pretty good and the waiter was friendly. He brought over an ashtray of water for my dog when we sat down. Maybe we'll try it again on a different night (after trying the other cool-looking restaurants on that street!)

This place is ok to go for a beer but not for food.

I visited Edison & Co last night for the third time, and I have never received such terrible service. My previous two visits were very pleasant, but after last night, I don't know if I will come back. My group of 10 people were there celebrating a friend's birthday last night around 20:00, and were served by a man who didn't seem very happy. In my time in Munich, I have gotten used to servers that are not exactly "cheery", but this man became ruder and ruder as the night progressed. He took our orders perfectly normally, however one of the dishes he brought was incorrect. This was no problem, except that the server seemed to be angry at the person who ordered, even though he was the one that got the order wrong! He took the incorrect order back, expressionless and without saying a word ("es tut mir leid" or "es braucht ein paar Minuten" would have been nice.) Another problem was that my girlfriend was supposed to get crab chips with her salad, but they did not come. This was also no problem, except that she had to ask for them twice. The second time she asked, he simply turned around and went back to the kitchen. He then continued his work without a word. When they finally did come, there were so few of them that it seemed a bit pointless to have asked for them. I later asked the server, in the best German I was capable, if the restaurant had anything special for someone having a birthday. In my experience, restaurants often have some kind of a colorful drink, a funny hat, a small cake, or something for people with birthdays. I don't think this is such an unusual request, but he simply replied, "nein". We would have, of course, paid for anything special. But he didn't see fit to make any suggestions. The biggest problem seemed to be when we asked the server for serveral empty plates. We had brought a small birthday cake for our friend, and we wanted plates for the cake. After the request, he looked a bit angry. He simply turned around without saying anything, and left. He did come back with the plates, set them on the table, and left without a word. Nobody at our table could belive how angry he seemed! That was the point where I said to my girlfriend, "he's not getting a tip tonight." We did not, of course, tip him. This was difficult for me, because in the USA, a 10% tip is standard even for poor service. He responded to this by nearly throwing our change onto the table, rather than handing it to us. He even had the nerve to tell us (in German) that he was being very nice to us by giving us the plates we asked for, and that he "would not do it again"! If I had understood his phrase in German right away, I would have started arguing with him. A server in most American restaurants would be fired for saying such a thing to paying customers! After last night, I apologized to my friends for suggesting Edison & Co. I insisted to them that the service has always been good in the past! I don't know what this server's problem was, but I sincerely hope this note of mine will be taken seriously. I hope somebody will speak with this server, and tell him that good customers will not come back if they are greeted with constant rudeness, and that he cannot expect "Trinkgeld" if he is not nice!

Maybe you should tell the owner!

"Das Lokal ist vorubergehend geschlossen" according to the sign on the door tonight. No mention of when it will reopen.

Rob, I went to Edison and Co. for the Thanksgiving buffet last year and had a great experience. As a paying customer, you should not tolerate that kind of treatment from the person whose job it is to serve you. If that had happened to me I would have deininitely asked to talk to the manager. If more people spoke up and complained when this kind of thing happens then maybe the service would be better here in Germany.

As mentioned above a couple of weeks ago, Edison's is still closed. I reckon it's gone for good. The sign on it's door still saying "vorubergehend geschlossen".

went past here the other day, and it's definitely dead - there was a "zum vermieten" sign in the window. schade :(

There is a sign up in Edisons saying that they will be re-opening on August 1st. Not sure if its new management or what. Poots

This has reopened, but it's new waiting staff, and it's obviously a new chef as well. The food used to be quite nice, but it was bland and unappealing last night. Won't be going back in a hurry, I'm afraid :(

I called Edison's last weeek (Nov., 2005) and they have changed ownership since August. The restaraunt and the menue look the same, but they stopped offering the Thanksgiving special, and probably the Christmas special too. I was really disappointed! Maybe if everyone complains, they'll start it again next year! :-(

Posted by: "Renee" at 4:54 pm on 22.Nov.2005

Hi all. For Renee: I didn't believe what you say and I called Edison & Co also, maybe it was a mistake to you, but they do have a Thanksgiving Special, I will be there on Thursday 24th of November. It seems to be good there and I think I will enjoy the turkey. CU

Connoisseurs of bland, unpalatable food will be distressed to learn that this place has closed down. The rest of us can look forward to a nice new Indian restaurant opening at this location. Will keep my ears open for details and post what I know :)

I'm glad this restaurant is closed. Edison was an evil man. He killed Topsy and then gladly distributed the video. A nasty piece of work. 100's of other innocents succumbed to this murderer too. Don't believe me? Do a Google of "Topsy Edison"!

LOL I'd never heard of poor Topsy the elephant before, so thanks for that snippet :) Anyway, they haven't opened a new Indian place in this location, it's actually Italian as it turns out. It's a bit like a youth club, really - very young crowd. Food was quite good, though.
