20% of Munich households recieve their TV via conventional "terrestrial" aerials. Another 20% use satellite, and the remaining 60% are hooked up via cable. If you're one of the few who still uses terrestrial reception, beware that your screen may be about to go dark. From 30th May transmissions in Munich will begin switching over from analog to digital. To receive these you will need either a digital-capable TV set, or an external decoder box. The boxes cost about €100 and are available from all home electronics stores (MediaMarkt, Saturn, etc.).

Lots of houses may already have digital TV - via their cable connection. Kabel Deutschland, for example, sends the signal in both analog and digital. By connecting a digital receiver up to your cable line you can receive a load of extra TV channels (including BBC World) and radio stations, all in digital, with an electronic programme guide.
Not many people know that. |
