Posted by: "worm" at 1:47 pm on 6.Jan.2005The place itself is nothing to write home about. The main area has a sofa and some tables & chairs which must have come from someones patio. Theres a room off to the side with a fußball table but the most noticeable thing is that its pretty barren of furniture and niceties. Down the back past the bar theres another small seating area with a couple of sofas. Upstairs you have the area where the poetry readings and art exhibitions take place. Its basically a few rooms (with no doors) and currently a selection of large, for the most part ugly and ridiculously overpriced art. Forgive my apparent ignorance of such things but a paper plate stuck to a canvas and then spattered with various shades of oil based paint is not art in my book. That, my friends, will set you back a measly 1400. As for the 6 Lattenrost (I kid you not) which had been daubed with a few bright colours, gotten a nail each and were hanging on the wall with a tag of about 500, all I can say is ask my ar*e. There was a reading on during the evening. I went upstairs to visit the little boys room and saw a bearded bloke sitting on a high stool with one hand being waved around dramatically whilst reading from his book. I glanced around the corner to see the assembled throng and it was just three people. Two rather large ladies nodding appreciatively (I suspect drugs myself) and a bloke who looked like he had taken a wrong turn on his way to the loo but was too embarrassed to say anything. The toilets need work. There were three urinals, one of which had been covered with tape and paper. I suspect it may have been an attempt at creating a valuable piece of art rather than just broken. The walls are bare except for lots of graffiti and the place has an unclean look to it. Dunno about the Ladies facilities. There is no food served at Die Bank. However, you can get a menu from the Asian place around the corner. Pop over and order whatever you want and theyll bring it to the pub when its ready. The menu has a decent selection of Chinese, Thai and Indian dishes and whilst not the best quality, the portions are large & reasonably priced. It does the job. There was only one bloke working there last night as far as I could see. Slender baldy chappie. Top quality service. Friendly as you could wish for and very much on the ball with getting the beers in and clearing away empties. Ahy yes, beer of choice is Augustiner by the neck. Would I go back? Probably wouldnt choose it for a night out myself but wouldnt object too much if invited along to something there. Will perhaps give it another crack on a weekend night as we were there Tuesday and so you can't gauge the worth of a place to its fullest.
Posted by: Keydeck at 10:19 am on 18.Jan.2006Have been there loads of times. Decor changed a few months ago to include the "works of art". I like the place: Good music from the DJs on weekend evenings, and a large area to just stand around, slighly older crowd (> 25 I'd say). Basic bottled beers at ok prices and the usual cocktails. Not a g*y bar (is in the g*y quarter), but has its fair share of the non-intrusive sort, unless you count "hi do you like girls? We're g*y, but we've got a girl who would like to meet a guy tonight" as instrusive. I don't :) Nice.
