Carmen’s Lounge might be your “standard” gay disco but is so good at its thing, the punters queue right along the street to get in! Although it might be un-cool to get to a club so early elsewhere, some nights here if you’re not in around midnight, it could be 4am till they can squeeze you in! While some of the club entry prices have edged up over the years and the price of drinks certainly has, Carmen’s keeps to a tried and trusted formula: € 5 entry, and you get € 5 worth of drink tickets to spend at the bar – and the prices there are cheap! What gay club does a helles for € 3? The drinkers love it! There’s a quiet-ish area with chairs and a relaxed bar if you want to chat with friends but the majority of the club is a big sweaty jam packed crowd, drinking, dancing and flirting to whatever tunes are pumping out. There’s a regular turnover of DJs and on the whole they’re good. This isn’t the place for cool music or pumping house though; You are going to hear a fair bit of charts, the latest mainstream gay classics, evergreens from the disco era and large doses of German “Schlager” music. You might get a treat of my bestie girlfriend slamming her handbag on the floor and we doing our classical Buck’s Fizz “Making You Mind Up!” routine around it to the astonishment of the Germans present. Crowd is very mixed, all sorts go in here from camp to butch, men, women, trannies, whatever. There’s a number of special events, women only nights, the flirt mail box night and a little bird tells me to expect some big -ish name acts over the next year.
