Overall comments: if your used to North American style vietnamese food, ala Boston's pho pastuer or any of the various holes in the wall in NYC, SF or Vancouver, this isn't it. But I do have to say that its actually damn decent especially for home delivery in Munich.
Notes: The website has PICTURES so you can see what you're ordering, the prices are much cheaper if you go to the restaraunt but its still cheap. Two of us ordered crab chips, fresh spring rolls, a noodle soup (big enough to share), a seafood dish with rice and a 1L bottle of diet coke. The total bill came to 24,05. Downsides: You need to order in GOOD german and be patient: a 5:00pm order didn't arrive til after 6:30. The guy did tell us it would take an hour but still no goods after the time was up. We called back, he seemed confused and wanted to take our order again. We explained that we'd already ordered and he mumbled something about traffic...the order showed up 20-30 minutes or so later.
Frankly, I got the brochure in my post box and confused it for Kam Yi in the city centre. Lucky mistake as I was pretty pleased. Then again by now I have developed lower expectations for asian food in Munich so take the post with the in mind. Anyhoo, list of my order below. Though newbies pr snobbies to Vietnamese food: I wouldn't recommend trying the first two items via home delivery on the first shot. I think they'd be much better in the restaraunt.
Fresh Spring Rolls: What it Should Be (to me): basically thin rice noodles, lettuce and herbs like basil, mint and/or cilantro/koriander, a bit of pork and fresh shrimp wrapped in a SOFT rice paper roll. The difference with these rolls are that they are not fried. Usually served with a peanut dipping or vinegar sauce. Photo Below.
What Cam-Ly Delivered: rolls were served with the vinegar sauce, they didn't have the cilantro, had tofu (which wasn't bad) and a spot (lierally) of shrimp in them. Major complaint is that the wrappers were a bit hard at the edges.
Pho Bo: - What it Should Be (to me): (Dac Biet) Pho is a staple noodle soup of all Vietnamese restaurants. The basic ingredients for the beef version are broth (damn good broth), various meats and flat rice noodles. It's normally served with several things on the side, which you throw in the bowl yourself to taste. Hoisin sauce and chili sauce, onions, bean sprouts, Thai basil, koriander and sometimes chopped jalapeno or chili peppers. Lime as well to squeeze on top. Photo Below.
What Cam-Ly Delivered: I ordered the beef version, though it comes in chicken and vegetable as well. The broth and noodles were good. The beef -as indicated on the menu it was plain (tough) rinderfleisch stirfried with ginger. It came with lots of the good sides noted above, including both sauces. I did get lots of onions, bean sprouts, a whole red chili and a wedge of lime. Major complaint: I think petersile was substituted for the koriander but thats to be expected. Also the home delivery version is listed as a noodle dish rather than a soup so its easy on the broth. As nothing beats a good pho and its complicated as hell to make, I might try it again in the restaraunt (or ask for additional broth with my order), I'd also tell them to lighten up on the ginger as I personally am not a fan...always did prefer maryanne.
Muc Xao Dua: - What it Should Be (to me): I had no expectations of this dish but the menu said
Gebratener Tintenfisch mit Ananas, Knoblauch, Chilli und Koriander - scharf.
What Cam-Ly Delivered: Its a good thing we didnt look at the website before we ordered, else we wouldn't have gone for this one but it was lovely. Probably the best thing on our list. All the stuff above plus bamboo shoots in a spicy coconut milk sauce. Probably most would call it a yellow curry. Served with a side of rice.
Again, definitely NOT knock your socks off Vietnamese but damn decent for home service in Munich, especially with winter on the doorstop. Full Contact Details Below.
Happy Eating Peeps ;)
I get delivery from Cam Ly fairly often as Vietnamese food is one of my weaknesses and this is the best I've found in Munich so far. The delivery usually takes about an hour but the last time I ordered it took over two hours! I generally find their food worth the wait but this is something to consider (don't order from them if you are hungry NOW). To add to the review above, every time I've ordered the fresh spring rolls, they have rice vermicelli, tofu, shrimp (indeed, just one piece), lettuce, cilantro and mint. They've never been missing the cilantro when I ordered them. They're not perfect, but I do find them to be excellent spring rolls and order them every time. I've tried the chicken Pho and enjoyed it for the most part. They give you a huge variety of condiments for it, which I love, including some herbs I'd never had before. The trio of basil, mint and cilantro are always included. I'm thinking that the reviewer above must have managed to order on a night that they ran out of cilantro. The meat in the pho was a bit overcooked, but I've come to expect that of chicken in Germany in general. My favorite dish is Bun Cha Nem--thin rice noodles served with something like an eggroll that has been sliced on the diagonal into smaller pieces. The roll is filled with glass noodles, morels, carrots and chicken. The dish is served with Nuoc Cham (that lovely vinegary sauce) and a bowl of assorted herbs and bean sprouts (which are always absolutely fresh). It's fun to try different flavor combinations with all these different elements to the meal. The delivery order always comes with a small dessert. The menu is large and varied--they even have goat, eel, quail and venison. I've never ordered anything from them that I didn't like. It's not even close to the best Vietnamese food I've had but as I said above, it is the best I've found in Munich.
Posted by: "Saan" at 1:01 pm on 6.Nov.2005Coming direct from Orange County, CA where there is the largest outside-of-Vietnam Vietnamese population (Garden Grove) I know my authentic/fast/student/highend Vietnamese food/pho/bahn mi. Munich doesn't have it, as stated above. Knowing this I ordered anyway and was pleased with the beef dish we got (Bo xa ot, beef with red peppers and lemon grass, hot) and the vegetables with red coconut milk curry (rau car-ri) was just okay. Both came with big bowls of herbaceous greens- sawtooth, cilantro, basil, red onion, shallots (?) and chili. We didn't get a little dessert. Delivery time did not seem to be a problem (approx half an hour at 10 pm), even though they were driving to Schwabing. The delivery menu begins with a glossary of ingredients, which was nice. The best part, which I appreciated so much, is that they worked through taking my order despite my nearly non-existant German (I can't say zwoelf: why, why do I have to live at zwoelf???), and their minimal grasp of English and did it with patience and good humor (they counted slowly in English until we got to the right number). For all that, I'm sure to their chagrin, they have earned my allegience to their home service. Next time, the pho.
Posted by: "Desyl" at 12:51 am on 21.Jan.2006I get takeaway from these guys most weekends, and they are terrific for a takeaway place. They even have pictures of the food on the website, so you have some idea of what you're getting. Definately recommended.
Posted by: "the mongrel" at 10:27 am on 21.Jan.2006We have take away from here and we ate there last Friday. I don't know when it was re-decorated but it is certainly much nicer now than the picture shown on here. Ok, the service when we were there was a little slow and we waited a little when we had take-out BUT this is some of the best food I have eaten anywhere, from any style of restaurant, in a long time. We want to go back next week but we are saving it for special occasions because it is exactly that, SPECIAL!
Posted by: "Ian" at 8:54 pm on 28.Mar.2006excellent recommendation. did the eat-in. the "lucky" rolls are fabulous, fresh, large! had a dinner with the girls and chose the "Pho Ga": a chicken soup with coriander, morning glory (water spinach?), anis... wow, something fantastic in my neighborhood. no need to leave sendling again.
Posted by: "Ella Star" at 12:16 am on 2.Apr.2006Finally! I found a good vietname in town. The "lucky rolls" are lovely.
Posted by: "rubber duck" at 10:40 am on 6.Apr.2006I had dinner there last night and I definitely would go back. I thought the food was very good and the spiciness descriptions to be spot on. There are not traditionally fried rolls but they're not healthy for you anyway; the spring rolls were still delicious. The restaurant was nice, well lit, and had a relaxed atmosphere. Standard for Vietnamese restaurant though ... it smelled like Vietnamese food ... however I often find this a good sign. They have English menus if you can't get by on German alone (but then how will you ever learn). Since I'm in a Vietnamese restaurant, I'd expect to get a Vietnamese beer, but I find that hard to do in Munich (no 33 to be had). Cost for two people was 45 Euro (2 drinks each, rolls, meal). The only thing better than the food was the beautiful waitress. As I said at the beginning, I will definitely go back (even if the waitress isn't there ;o).
