Cafe Luitpold, Palmengarten - Briennerstrasse 11, 80333 Munich, Germany
Built in 1888, Cafe Luitpold was once the most spectacular cafe in Munich. During the early Forties, Lancaster and B-17 crews significantly remodeled the cafe building. Postwar architects finished the job, shrinking the cafe's size and stripping away almost all the lovely old ornamentation, leaving only the Palmengarten as a monument worth looking at. The cafe is now a small part of the fashionable, modern Luitpoldblock shopping complex, located between Odeonsplatz and Maximiliansplatz. Wear your most expensive casual clothes when you come here. ...

The cafe is in three parts. There's the main interior section, whose customers appear to be mostly your grandparents' age. The coffee and sweets counter is a toney place for an after-lunch dessert or caffeine break. Chocolate addicts will appreciate the famous packaged Luitpold confections.
The palm garden is a stylish lunch spot, where you can dine in a simulated outdoor patio in the foulest weather.
I like the mixed grilled vegetable dish for EUR 9.90. Most other lunch entrees cost more, so this is not for the budget-conscious. But when upscale ambience is a factor, the Palmengarten is worth considering.
