Café im SUB - Munich

Cheap beer, central location, no attitude and all for a good cause! What more could you ask for in a pub? OK OK I must admit that SUB is one of my locals and mates of mine work there so I’m bound to give it a good review! At the end of the day though even those who criticise the place, are head pressed to name somewhere better. The “Café im SUB” is the pub of the Gay Centre on the Müllerstrasse which also offers various groups, advice, campaigning, cultural events etc etc. As all the bar staff are unpaid volunteers, the service can be a bit basic (but could you do any better?) and as they set the music policy each night it might vary from indie to house to disco to show tunes to heavy rock. Mellow lighting, decent air conditioning, usually some art on the walls and non-smoking upstairs. Here, the English speaking info desk or the notice boards can give you information on almost anything happening on the gay scene and you can pick up leaflets etc. You are also fairly likely to bump into some English speakers too, SUB is often the 1st point of call of for visitors as well as being a popular watering hole with non-Germans living here. The crowd are mixed, from late teens, well into pensionable age. During the week the bar is a relaxing friendly place for a drink, on Fridays and Saturdays from 9 it gets jammers as everyone seems to meet their mates there before heading out. Augustiner EDELSTOFF at € 2,60 which suits me fine though it has to be said there is no obligation to drink either anything or beer in SUB. Indeed, the bar is supposed to let people get to know each other in a friendly atmosphere rather than be one of the heavy drinking gay bars. This is underlined by the 11pm closing time (12 at weekends) and the fact that they don’t sell spirits. See you there!

My home away from home when I am in Munich...very friendly staff...try it when in Munich they will make you feel at home wayne
