Café Freiheit - Leonrodstrasse 20, 80634 Munich, Germany
This café is not located at Münchener Freiheit as you might expect, far from it. Its real name is Café Am Platz Der Freiheit which is, thank heavens, shortened to Freiheit.
The public is mixed, all ages, all conditions. Décor is sophisticated, which is what you say when you dont really like it but think it is not too bad. The staff are professional but a bit cold.

Most tables are round with four chairs and would be perfect for two couples or my three brothers, if they ever visit me altogether. The menu is short but complicated. Nothing special, but worth knowing just in case.

The Cafe Freiheit is a beautiful place to see beautiful and approachable people. The staff all speak English, the food is superb.
Posted by: "bluesky" at 10:58 am on 3.Jan.2004Bluesky, are you on drugs or something? ;-) Cafe Freiheit is terrible. The food is bad, the customers have a severe attitude problem and are mostly mutton dressed as lamb - a 40+ crowd still trying to be cool. The staff do not all speak English but they do speak rude quite fluently. I live extremely close to Cafe Freiheit (i.e. within 100 metres) and have given up on the place. I'll stick to The Big Easy and Ysenegger thanks.
Posted by: Katrina at 10:59 am on 3.Jan.2004Katrina, where else do 40ers trying to be cool go, cause that describes me perfectly. I'd appreciate it, really. No on the drugs. We're neighbors.
Posted by: "bluesky" at 11:01 am on 3.Jan.2004I wouldn't go there regardless of age (I'm 31). Everytime I walk past it I shudder. The guy who runs it has a brother and the brother runs the Ysenburg (which also isn't much use and he owns two snappy, badly behaved dogs). Café Ruffini? Löwengarten? There are lots of good places in the area, Café Freiheit isn't one of them. Of course if you actually enjoy bad service do also try Pardi, famously terrible staff and a similar crowd but at least the food is edible.
Posted by: Katrina at 11:02 am on 3.Jan.2004Katrina - are we talking about the same place? The food is excellent in Café Freiheit, the Breakfast is way better than for example the way overrated brunch in Café Neuhausen and the service is tops.
Posted by: "Mario" at 12:09 am on 11.Mar.2004This place is usually dead, been there a couple of times and can say nothing to recommend it. I live in this area and stick to ysenegger or wasserman.
Posted by: "Jay" at 3:40 pm on 4.Nov.2004There are interestingly two opposite groups of people contributing to this post. Those with developed tastes who have learnt to appreciate a place with a little bit of understated style and those who learn what they should like on TV and in magazines and think 'dressing up' is not wearing trainers. One thing I actually like about Germany is seeing older people at cool places - seems to give a place a little depth. The secret to Cafe Freiheit is in special design geometries and trained staff in place to repel the plastic set off to their MacCafes and MacBars leaving Freiheit for the enjoyment of those who know what it is to be in Europe and not over in TV-land. If you know what I mean... There are always people who want to talk large. Trouble not.. I have been to Freiheit several times over the past few years. The food is consistently of a high standard - international cuisine, the winelist satisfactory, the service is, well, absolutely standard for Munich and the atmosphere has always been more than pleasing to anyone I've taken there, whether it be my Mother or my girlfriend(s) :|
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 1:13 pm on 14.Feb.2005as they don't have a non-smoking area, I won't bother to test it for myself. Too bad, the controversy interests me!
Posted by: Gen at 12:19 pm on 17.Feb.2005Well anonymous can't even be bother to write their name in, so why should I be bothered by what they say? Freiheit is *still* dreadful and full of people with no manners (which is probably why the person above likes it).
Posted by: Katrina at 9:53 am on 18.Feb.2005As a Canadian living in the area, I am not bothered by the scene, find it fascinating but would not go there to eat as there is no "no-smoking" zone which is now law in Germany.
Posted by: "schiller" at 4:24 pm on 17.Jul.2005I read the reviews posted here and I was completely taken aback by those who cannot sense what a gem Cafe Freiheit is. I have eaten at numerous restaurants in southern Germany, all the way from luxurious ones in the Black Forest to specialized ones nestled in the Bavarian countryside. Freiheit is one restaurant I make certain I return to each time I am in Munich. It is so Munich: it has a human scale on par with the city itself, it is welcoming, offers expertly prepared dishes to savour, is experientially relaxing. In a word, perfect for lingering over one's meal, drink, conversation or a book. I recall one of the many reasons why Cafe Freiheit is so inviting. It was a member of their staff a few years back, Marcus, who is no longer there I understand. He (and our selections) made the first of my many visits so memorable for my dinner companion and me. I guess the Cafe really does have the right name: people have the "freedom" to be ignorant of Cafe Freiheit's qualities.
Posted by: "dennis" at 4:06 am on 9.Dec.2005Cafe Freiheit is still not worthy of a visit. "Freedom to be ignorant"? No. It just isn't any good and stating that is fair comment.
Posted by: Katrina at 1:41 pm on 14.Dec.2005I also find the service at Cafe Freiheit to be quite rubbish I have to say, am speaking from 2 recent experiences at the place.
Posted by: Moonboot at 10:50 am on 16.Dec.2005Went there once....not impressed. Decor needs updating, food was ok, and service was soso. How anyone could say the breakfast there is better than Cafe Neuhausen is beyond me.
Posted by: "Anonymous" at 4:07 pm on 16.Dec.2005I have laughed myself silly reading these comments about Cafe Freiheit - I find it fascinating to hear people seriously discussing service in Germany - I always assume the worst and am often pleasantly surprised but mostly appalled by poor to rotten service in Germany. Cafe Freiheit is no exception. I too live close by and have given it the benefit of the doubt on several occasions - I cannot recall having been there once without having been punished by the staff for putting in an appearance. The food is often very good but don't try odering toast with your breakfast - they'll shit on you from a dizzy height, tell you that toast doesn't exist there and then end up bringing it anyway but will do everything to make you suffer for the pleasure of having received it. You will leave there smelling like smoked fish and if you ask to sit in the "posh" section they will ten to ten turn down your request. The location is convenient and it does have a certain touch of weird flair. Why I often go back? Sucker for punishment and the first place I stumble across before hitting the subway.
