Brenner Grill - Maximilianstr. 15, 80539 Munich, Germany

The Brenner Grill is a fantasic new restaurant in the center of Munich. It opened in late 2003 in newly renovated buildings off Maximilianstrasse - Munich's noble shopping mile. What makes this restaurant really stand out is the way the food is prepared. All cooking happens on open grills in the center of the restaurant. You can watch every detail of your dish being prepared. There are two of these kitchen areas - one is an open charcoal grill for cooking the steaks, the other has gas-flames for boiling and preparing pasta.

Brenner Grill - Munich

Although the address for Brenner Grill is Maximilianstrasse 15 it is actually located in a courtyard behind the street. The restaurant is pretty large, it can seat up to 300 guests. There are three sections. At the front is the wine bar which is decked out with small coffee tables. In the middle is the "pasta restaurant". And at the back is the largest section which is known as the "steak restaurant". Despite the three sections having different names, you can order all types of food in all three. The menu is fairly small, and it doesn't change either. There are always 5 or 6 pasta dishes available. These are very reasonably priced at €7 or €8 each. There are also various steak and fish dishes. The T-bone steak costs €14.50, that is for the steak alone. Side dishes of grilled vegetables and salad cost an extra €3.50 each.

The service is extremely friendly and prompt. The stone archways and pillars are reminiscent of the Ratskeller restaurant, and the atmosphere is kind of similar. The Brenner Grill is more open plan though, there are not the private little nooks and crannies like there are at the Ratskeller. The tables in the Brenner Grill do have white table cloths, but they are overlaid with a white disposable paper cover, which gives the place a little of a cheap feel. But that's only a minor gripe. The food is very reasonably priced so you have to live with the other cost cutting measures.

All in all, highly recommended!

Brenner's do-it-yourself cuisine is a novel idea in Munich, order exactly what you want with several variations of sides. Food was good as was the service. A great place to people-watch with a comfortable atmosphere.

The food here is excellent, but if you plan on ordering a steak, 2 side dishes and a drink or two, be prepared to pay the price. Atmosphere is very cosmopolitan (some would say noisy).

Noisey or what... on Saturday night it was almost impossible to hear the person sitting next to you. The arched ceilings create an acoustic effect which makes sound bounce all over the cavernous halls. Not a place for a quiet, romatic dinner but service was very good for Bavarian standards with food and cocktails substantial, not over priced either. Oh, and one bonus point to mention, you come away with a free hoarse throat the next day from all that shouting !-)

The Brenner is definitely one of the more exciting restaurants in Munich's city centre. The atmosphere is a nice Melange of modern and old and the place is suitable for both business lunches and private dinners, for casual and more formal occasions. Food is healty (fish and meat grilled over open fire with vegetables or salat on the side) but it is pricey. Two main course plus a coffee can cost you 50 euros.

very good food (specially pasta). Mixed clientele (from chic to normal to businessmen to opera´s visitors). The crew is not specially friendly, and i found the atmosphere a little bit cold.

I was there this Saturday with a lady friend (who speaks fluent German) and we had a good time. The waiters were friendly (they are Italian, after all) and the steaks were juicy and a very decent size. Can't comment about the prize, as it was her treat. Interesting and friendly atmosphere. All the staffmembers were very down-to-earth, friendly and professional. And I have to dissagree with an earlier comment here, as I had no problem hearing my dinner companion! Try and enjoy for yourselves:-) Paul

Ate here on Saturday night. Sat in the middle section and the only complaint was the music from the front area was a bit loud but had no problem having a conversation. The service was surprisingly quick and friendly considering the place was rather full. Most importantly the food was delicious from start to finish. And the bill didn't put a big dent in the wallet at the end of the night.

We were there a month or so back. Service and food were both excellent. Noise, not a problem. Steak was cooked perfectly (asked for rare, got rare).

I had dinner the first week of the opening and enjoyed it. Since that time I have dined there twice with little waiting time for my table.

I've been here before a few times and have had good service and good food - but we booked a table for 7 of us on Saturday for my husband's birthday and the whole evening was farcial. When I booked I was told it was impossible to reserve a place in the bar (although I've done this before ...) and impossible to arrange a birthday cake, because they have more than one seating at a table per evening(???) When we arrived, the table wasn't ready on time, so we stood around waiting for half an hour whilst the woman seating people flapped around ineffectually, (she forgot about us twice...) The orders got mixed up, and instead of apologising, the waiter insisted that the bloody (and I mean blue, bloody) steak that we got was "medium"... And don't even get me started on how difficult it was to order a simple dessert. The food's good, it's a fun place for an impromptu evening, but the organisation is shocking.

Went to Brenner yesterday with 3 friends for lunch. Mittagsspecial was great, services was great. Someone mentioned & the waitress confirmed, they have Happy Hour in the bar, free antipasta with your drink. It's Monday - Friday from 5 pm to 8 pm, on Saturdays from 6 pm to 8 pm.

Went for business lunches a couple of times in the last two months. Quality and service have gone markedly downhill. Slow service, mistakes from the kitchen, airheaded staff that weren't pleasant enough to make up for it. I don't know if it was a change in management or wholesale staff turnover, but it's no longer the place for a quality but less formal business lunch.

Am a great fan of Brenners. Great food, fabulous service and super atmosphere.

Best ingredients, served with dilettante style in an overcrowded and overpriced environment. That's what brenner is. But the Munich society likes it. Whatever.

Service is good. Nice staff with good english level. The clients are not what I expected for Maximillian. Not that I care to much about who sits next to me, but people were really not fitting to the place somehow. The quality of food is in general quite good. On our table (4 people) only one person complained about the quality. His entrecote was apparantly horrible. As for the quantity, well, here it is really bad. I looked at the menu and I though it was not too expensive until I saw the quantities. So, I would say they are on the french said of cooking. They assume that you will have a 5 course menu meal and therefore the main dish is extremely small (so small, that even a woman would say is small). Just one more remark. The wine list is ok but not greate. They have about 20 red wines, but they focus a lot on Italian and French wines. I really would like to understand why people still believe that french wines are so much better than others! They are not!!!! Anway..back to my point. In general I did not like the restaurant. I was expecting a bit more for a restaurant with that style on that location

Went to Brenner last night and thought it was "OK", but just "OK". There was no real ambience and lots of Shicky Micky Fake Tan type people (to be expected for the location I suppose) but, on the plus side, the steak was fantastic ! Tried it, was ok, but won't rush back : there are other restaurants in Munich.

I had a tasty but crowded dinner at Brenner last weekend. They're definitely aiming for the "chic appeal". A nice crowd to look at though, if you know what I mean. Perfect, medium rare beef tenderloin for 14,50 euro. Nice cut, about 10 ounces. They also allow you to split sides so you can get half potatoes and half vegetables for 3,50 euro. That's not too bad. Also, full English menu. Service wasn't bad. Just make sure you're not in a hurry. Anyway, a good, thick quality cut of beef that's not overcooked. Tough to find around here!

I just got back from Brenner's Grill. My wife and I had a most enjoyable evening. First, the waiter was awesome. His name is Manuel. You want to have an enjoyable service and evening, ask for Manuel. The steaks: My wife and I ordered the Entrecote. Amazing. Cooked as ordered. Is the place expensive? Let's say, for what we ordered we would have paid more than $125 in the States. We ended up paying $90 including the tip for wine, starter drinks, caprese, veggies, potatoes, steaks. Plus, we had an enjoyable evening. Noise? no problem. We loved the atmosphere, the cool surroundings and the food. Brenner's is a place you will come back to. We will for sure. Remember, ask for Manuel if you go there and have a great time.

Posted by: "Sammy" at 11:02 pm on 29.Jul.2007

If you meant $90 = EUR 90 it is the same as $125 in the US; doh! you forgot about the exchange rate. You are paying the same then, as you would back in the States. If you truly only paid $90 or Euro 70, they miscalculated your check, since with two Entrecotes, wine, starters, and etc, no way can it only be EUR 70. IMO, Brenner's is a good place for steak it's like a Ruth Chris - but can't compare to a Smith and Wollensky or the Palm.

Posted by: tohchang at 2:40 pm on 30.Jul.2007

Do you mean Ruth´s Chris? Since we are here at the steakhouse pedant forum, let´s make sure we get the name straight. As for your taste in meat, well, I notice you mentioned neither Sparks nor Peter Luger... If you are looking for a good piece of meat in Munich you could do worse than Brenner´s - whichever your choice of currency. If you are going to lecture ol´ Sammy on his review, at least do us the courtesy of recommending something that one can get to by Ubahn.

a group of us went here last Saturday night. the food we had was first class. between us we had oysters, grilled Saibling, rabbit, lamb-chops and veal steak. everyone was more than happy with their meal. the choice of wine was excellent. the price was fine for the standard of food (€180 for 5 people) the service was extremely attentive, we were attended by several waiters, all our food arrived at the same time. the atmosphere there was great, the open grills in the centre of the room were fun to watch. our only criticism would be that due to the high arched ceilings (so one of our friends said...) we had to talk loud to each other to be heard. aside from that would definitely recommend the place, just get in quick with your reservation!

I heard this place is closing down! Can anyone confirm?
